How To Lower Your LEXUS! (springs, struts, coilovers)

MY STORE: forward-moment...

Follow along as I walk you through the strut and spring removal and replacement instructions on my LEXUS GS400. The same (or similar) instructions apply to many other vehicles as well, such as TOYOTA ARISTO, LEXUS IS, LEXUS SC, LEXUS LS, etc. These instructions will allow you to change out springs, struts or add coilovers (or any combo in between).
For the 2nd gen LEXUS GS, you do NOT have to remove the upper ball joints (UBJ) even though the FSM says to do so! The passenger front strut assembly just requires a little finesse to get in and out. If you want to remove the UBJ, by all means go for it.
Be sure to get an alignment after the springs settle!
TOOLS
Jacks (the more the better)
Jack Stands Decent mechanics tool kit Spring compressors (I used the Harbor Freight spring compressors, found here: www.harborfrei...)
Penetrant spray (helps free rusted and corroded hardware)
Protective gear during spring compression (helmet, safety glasses)
Air tools are helpful, but not required
PARTS
Your choice of springs, struts or coilovers (Tein H-Techs shown, P/N SKY98-BUB00, $207 shipped from RCA Garage, 1.2" drop Front and Rear, really nice OEM-type feel, with about 20% increased firmness)
KYB Excel-G Struts (or equivalent)

Make sure you preload the suspension for final torque down. You’ll want to torque major pivot points on the control arms using this method.

Great video! Regarding your comment towards the end about all the sway bar upgrades, lowered suspension & wishing Lexus offered this a in a more sporty offering: that's what they had the SC, and the IS for, as I see it. This car was designed to be a less expensive executive touring sedan to compliment their flagship LS "aircraft carrier". The GS is more like a destroyer in that sense, with the other two possibly comparable to a frigate and a corvette, respectively. So it has a floatier/softer ride, purposely. Maybe they weren't trying to compete with the BMW M5 class of the day, but rather just the 535i or something comparible. (Lexus for the win all day though, remember the tag line "Something Wicked This Way Comes"?) While I'm all for modifying my vehicles (and thus enjoying your howto content), you're really moving into territory this platform was never designed for at the design/engineering stages (IMHO). Just something to keep in mind as we push the car to boundaries it wasn't necessarily designed or marketed to cross. 🤔
@ForwardMomentum
@ForwardMomentum Год назад
Thanks for the thoughtful and informative response. I probably should have been a little more clear in the video that my personal preference is a stiffer ride with less body roll, and if I could go back in time I would have done a bit more when I modded the suspension to curtail what I am experiencing now (good coilovers probably would have been best, just so expensive!). It’s crazy because we have this Civic EP3 for my son (FWD Miata) and it’s the exact opposite of the GS. I drive both cars and go from one to the other, so it’s amazing to experience two different cars designed tow different ways for two different purposes. I also rent cars on business trips and my last rental was a new Camaro. While I hated almost everything about that car, the suspension was pretty nice and matched my personality quite well (tight and confidence inspiring, yet not too harsh). Tech has come a long way since 1998! I’ll continue to make incremental tweaks and hope I don’t cross the line too much with the suspension. I’ll document my wins and losses here for all to critique and enjoy as well. 😎 Take care and thanks again. 👊

Awesome car. What do you think of the ride quality after this? I just got a GS430 and I'm torn on getting bilstein & springs or a set of coilovers. I'll likely be doing the RCA as well, and would like a stance similar to how yours looks, maybe with 19s. Big probs for swapping the springs yourself...I don't think I'd have the balls to use those spring compressors lol Thanks for the videos! I'm basically planning on doing all the same mods in the same order you are...gonna be a HUGE help.
@ForwardMomentum
@ForwardMomentum 3 года назад
Thanks! Ride quality is “sporty” and, if anything, not stiff enough for me. But I tend to drive in a spirited fashion, so a little stiffer might be nice. Anyway, it rides comfortably. GL with your 430 and glad I could help! 😎

Hey man just curious - I’ve seen a lot of GS owners talk about the ball joints going out. How have yours held up? Any tips? I’m getting a clunking sound after new Tein shocks and my strut mounts are torqued on fine. Thanks!
@ForwardMomentum
@ForwardMomentum Год назад
So far so good on mine. I have older grease-able Moogs and I hit them with grease on occasion. However, OEM or 555’s are what most replace with. For that clunk, check the top nut on the struts. Mine clunked when that was not torqued properly. And make sure all nuts and bolts are torqued with weight on wheels. 👍
@scorchez
@scorchez Год назад
How have the KYBs and Tein springs held up this far? Any regrets? Would you describe the setup as OEM-plus? One of my rear coils broke (original) and with 3yr old KYB struts all around, I’m considering picking up these HTechs to get me back on the road. Also considering Tein Street Basic coilovers or Bilstein/H&R combo. Would love to hear you insight. Thanks for all your videos and knowledge over the years.
@ForwardMomentum
@ForwardMomentum Год назад
KYB’s and Teins have been great. If anything, I’d like it just a touch stiffer. But it’s a great combo. Some guys run the Bilstein HDs I believe. That might be another good option. In the end, struts and springs are about as much as decent coilovers though; another option to consider as well. 👍
@scorchez
@scorchez Год назад
@@ForwardMomentum Thank you for the quick reply! As a follow up, would you describe the the ride as OEM soft, softer than OEM or stiffer than OEM? Ultimately, want to avoid a bouncy ride and turning the Lexus into a mid-90s civic. My main goal is to go a bit lower while keeping as much of the Lexus road manners as possible. Thanks!
@ForwardMomentum
@ForwardMomentum Год назад
Definitely OEM+. Almost like a sport offering from the factory. The only time I’m really wanting a bit more stiffness is when I push the car hard, so only 1-2% of the time. Otherwise it rides awesome and no one ever complains while riding in it. Hope that helps!
