How to make 90HP by changing your piston rings. Did you know that piston rings can make a 90hp difference? 200HP compared to used rings. In this video Lake Speed Jr. tells us how he did it. Join us as we discuss how rings no longer hold oil like they used to. Now, the cylinders need to hold the oil.

Such an overlooked topic, rings seal MUCH worse than most people think, it's critical to pay attention to detail when it comes to piston rings to get the best sealing with the lowest friction.

Right on Danny! Thanks for hosting Lake at your shop! It makes me wonder if more power/better fuel economy could be added to Smokeys HVC engine with newer ring packs & hone tech from Lakes employer (Total Seal piston rings), right?

Most definitely, our new HVC engine will have the newest ring/cylinder technology available. Totalseal been testing some new cylinders and rings.👍👍👍. We are also using a roller cam and lifters. And fuel injection. With better coating and thermal protection we can make it more efficient. Smokey was getting 1.8hp per cubic inch and 54mpg and passed emissions without a catalytic converter. Our engine will use a catalytic converter. We have been working on two engines a 3 cylinder ( 1/2 of a 4.3 GM) and a 4 cylinder for an S10. Smokey was working on an s10 for GM. The difference was Smokey was self funded and he had money, we are self funding and keeping up with work doesn’t leave much time for development. We will get her done!

So where does that leave us with a for example ford 5.8L/351W engine in a daily driver to gather Horse power gain per dollars invested?

Depending on what year 351w you have Ford started using thinner rings and better piston design, unfortunately rebuilders want to save money and use the older design pistons because their way cheaper. Every engine can benefit from the new ring design. Thanks for watching.

@@MrDanielSoliz This would be for the OBS 1997 f-250HD 5.8L 351W, that has an upgraded E4OD HD rebuild parts in it. I was amazed at the better engineered parts that were available than what came in the factory OEM install. Thank you for your time. Always trying to learn something new and better way to do things bigger than myself at 60 yrs. old.

Thanks, we have had some losses in our family and my brother in law who has beaten lung cancer now has brain cancer, with all our work and time with family it’s been hard to do any filming or editing. We filmed this video months ago. Still have hours of video I did with Lake that I haven’t edited.😔 We really miss our Livestream family and want to get passed this. 🙏

Great stuff Danny. Love the way you and Lake interact. I always say that the internal combustion engine is a Delta P device. It operates solely on pressure differential. Blowby not only reduces the working pressure in the cylinder, it increases the crankcase pressure. A lose lose situation. Add the increased pumping losses of having to move the blowby around in the crankcase and it gets even worse. Looking forward to part 2 and the honing. Regards Greg

Did I miss, did you change the hone, the stroke of the hatch. Were there other small changes. But it is so interesting that small changes can make a big difference. And I grew up knowing your father in the era.

Way longer then a conventional thick ring. The rings are much harder and thinner and with less friction they last longer. A NASCAR engine was down power at the end of the race before these rings now they could actually race the same engine another day. Racers on smaller tracks can run many races on the same engine and still make as much power as when it was new. More cost effective. Thanks for watching.

Equally important is to clean the cylinder with atf and i add ZDDP to the break in to kind of make it easier on the rings as they scrape off the peaks of the cylinder walls. Also, hope you got your package bro i forgot to add a note inside lol

What I never understood was why do automotive motors run Chromed rings and cast cylinder walls yet aviation it's total opposite with chromed cylinders and cast rings? What one is even better? Other then you gotta burn leaded fuel maybe just cause its easier to rechrome the cylinders lol

Curious if a leak down test or a compression test would of came to the same conclusion the rings are not sealing properly?

Did i miss somthing?? You said it made 690 hp. Then it ran damaged & made what, 480hp? So u freshened it & it made 780 hp. Thats not 300 hp increase? Its a 90 hp increase. Since when it was last fresh, it made 690. Now its fresh again at 780 . That would be 90 hp increase. And it sounds like the cam & some of the valvetrain as well as the pistons & rings was updated. Thats good that it got a 90hp increase. But i would expect some increase? And why are u trying to portray it as a 300hp increase?? It was down on power becouse it was damaged.

I agree with your math, when I was editing the video Lake said it made 200hp and I thought that would make a good title for the video. Been editing hour of video and sometimes my editing isn’t the best.👍

Are there options for the new thinner, longer lasting rings for a Ford 460? Say 9.0 to 10.0 CR? I'm planning a torque build 460, but would really love to have the longevity of modern engines. I'm a mechanic, and run compression tests on engines with 250-300k only to find great compression. The valve train and bottom end might be worn out, but the cylinders seem to last forever with good maintenance. Or is that only possible because of the nichrome cylinders, or whatever other new metal they make them from now?

What we do on the Ford 351m is have custom pistons made and that really not that bad in price but you will have to wait a bit. Not to bad. Check CP Carrillo and JE to see if they have something on the self.

Sorry buddy, tell us a HP number lost to ring friction alone, or sealing at high rpm. That HP/energy goes "somewhere" If 90hp worth of heat was lost to rings they would melt given your test motor and rpm

How about a strict a-b comparison. 90hp with "super duper trick of the week" rings, and a cam swap. Y'all all getting great at half-truths.90hp gains from rings in your cubic inches, output/rpm range assuming both combinations were healthy is a damn lie, complete and utter BS

This was a small clip of hours of video we shot in February and haven’t had time to edit it till now. I need to change the title to HP gains by using modern rings? Lake has video on the dyno with a better breakdown on HP taken at Schaefer racing engines with Dyno Don. Before and after numbers. The videos are on Lake Speed Jr and Totalseal rings RU-vid channel. You claim 90hp since the last freshen up, and 200hp over a tired engine claiming piston rings as the source of hp gain. Being conservative and only calling you out for half of your before/after 90hp. When you lose 45hp to ring friction, where does it go? How many BTU's can be transfered between the piston and block to account for even half your claim? Your claims are bs
