DIY SAIL SHADE NOTES - - - - - - - -
a) Determine attachment points. These may include a pergola, a large tree, post or building fascia. Connections must be structurally sound, get independent advice from an structural engineer.
b) Sail shades of 25 feet or less per side may be supported with 2” polyester webbing sewn along the sides. Larger sails should be supported with wire rope in sleeves, which is not covered in this video.
c) A properly mounted and tensioned shade sail will have approximately 150-400 pounds of edge tension. Wind loads from 5 to 15 lbs. per square foot are typical. Loading is divisible by the number of corners.
d) Flat sails must be canted adequately, 1:4 gradient slope is recommended. (about 14 degrees or 25%)
e) Remove shade sail(s) in harsh weather. Shade sails are not intended to support snow loads.
f) Prior to installation, check with local authorities for any relevant building codes or permits that may be required.
INSTALLING POSTS:
a) We recommend the use of 4 inch, schedule 40 steel pipe or 6 x 6 inch wood intended for outdoors use. Obtaining independent advice from a builder is recommended.
b) Posts should slope away from the center of the sail at an angle of about 5 to 10 degrees.
c) A conservative guide to burying the posts would be one third in the ground and two thirds above ground. This will vary depending on how many sails are attached to the post, soil conditions, size of the sails, etc. Posts are usually embedded in a concrete footing, 3 ft. to 6 ft. deep and 1 ft. to 1.5 ft. in diameter.
d) The use of a guy wire to help support posts where two or more sails are attached is recommended, especially for a 6 x 6 inch wood post.
e) Always call local authorities before you dig.
EXISTING STRUCTURES:
a) Diamond Pad Eyes, Corner Brackets or Eyebolts can be used to secure connectors to an existing structure. Use appropriate screws/bolts.
b) If attachments are secured to fascia the use of a fascia support is required.

Nice video. One question. Can you please clarify the units for the Working Load Limits formula. If I have a shade that has 4 corners and is 140sf I get 525. Can I assume that is represents 525lbs of tensile force? E.G. I should size a lag bolt for 525 lbs min. of pullout strength and a pad eye should have 525lbs minimum capacity? Thanks. Oops!. I just found the answer hidden under the "show more" tab. I'm gonna go with "yes."

Do you ever have trouble with the timber bowing or bending or the eye bolts being ripped around inside it? What's the price difference between a 5 post dual triangle sail as opposed to a 4 post large rectangle sail?
@SailriteDIY
@SailriteDIY 4 года назад
We used a 6 x 6 wooden post and sloped them away from the center of the sail at an angle of about 5 to 10 degrees. We did this so if they started to bow or bend they would not look bad. However after 21 months of use (removed for winter, of course) the posts have not bowed or bent. And we have had some major storms with very high winds and still had no issues. The Eye Bolts we used were through bolted (fixed and made fast by a nut at the end opposite the head) so, they are very secure and show no signs of movement or loosening. A "4-Sided Sail Shade" typically costs less, because you will not need as much stainless steel hardware as you would for two "3-Sided Sail Shades". We are currently finishing up a 4-Sided Sail Shade tutorial video that will be made public on RU-vid next week --- be watching for it soon! You can use the fabric calculator to determine what is required for a 3-sided or 4-sided sail shade: www.fabric-calculator.com/sail-shades.aspx

Great video ! . I found that it was better to use a child's washable marker pen , instead of a permanent marker , or cd writer , because if you ever need to write or draw directly on the sail , your scribbles will wash off with a little soap and water

will 4x4 post be enough? or should there be 6x6? How deep into the ground should the post go?
@SailriteDIY
@SailriteDIY 5 лет назад
If the sails are small enough it may work, but 6 x 6 is always better. Posts are usually embedded in a concrete footing, 3 ft. to 6 ft. deep and 1 ft. to 1.5 ft. in diameter.

Do you have to use the guy wire when you use a steel pole?
@SailriteDIY
@SailriteDIY 4 года назад
Not always, just depends on the size of the sail shade and the side of pole and depth it is plated.

I noticed that on some corners you used two bow shackles and in others you used just one. Was there a reason for this?
@SailriteDIY
@SailriteDIY 5 лет назад
We only used a bow shackle: www.sailrite.com/Polyfab-Pro-Stainless-Steel-Forged-Bow-Shackle-With-Bolt-5-16-8mm when we could not directly attach a sail shade corner ring directly to the hardware (chain or eye bolt). If the turnbuckle could attach to the sail shade corner ring or the chain without the shackle, we then did not use it.

Do you have any fabrics that won't fade in the sun?
@SailriteDIY
@SailriteDIY 5 лет назад
We have some of the best fabrics for use outdoors. For the best UVR resistance to fading pick Sunbrella Marine Grade fabrics. For a sail shade I would pick from the following: www.sailrite.com/Fabrics/Outdoor-Living-Fabric/Awning-and-Shade-Fabric/Brand/Parasol,Polytex/Outdoor-Living-Use/Shade-Sails These fabrics are very fade resistant and are built for heavy weight applications and are also sole in wide widths. All fabrics (like paints for a home), even Sunbrella will slightly fade over time, no fabric is fade proof.

I'm shocked the ratchet wrench survived. The amount of torque on that ratchet bearings from the cheater bar can obliterate it. It be better to use a proper box wrench and just go all the way around.

If we add the time to watch the video, do all that work, and add the cost of materails, I am better off going out to work that time and make money to buy it, and I might have some money left in my pocket.
