I 3D printed a simple remote control airboat that anyone can build! This video will guide you through how I designed this RC boat to be fast, completely watertight, and look pretty darn good! I'll also take you through some of the mistakes I made. This thing is super fun to control both on land and in the water! (And it's relatively inexpensive, considering it's competition!)

Absolutely brillint design1 You paid so much attention to detail, the model was a total pleasure to build. And it has so much potential for expansion! I plan to print a slightly larger version and kit it out with a full autonomous setup

This would be cool to build with a cutout for an acrylic box in the middle of it so you could stick a gopro or phone in it and record the underwater scenery :)

I have broken the rudder servo attachement and rudder hinge twice. I am going to try and print these pieces in PETG to see if that helps reslove.
@buildsomestuff
@buildsomestuff Год назад
PETG should help. Where exactly did the rudder pieces break? Was it the little alignment tabs that broke off?
@TrueNorthZero
@TrueNorthZero Год назад
@@buildsomestuff Yeah, the "tongues". I printed in 0.12mm layer height in PLA, perhaps if I used 0.2mm as you recommended they may have held up better.
@buildsomestuff
@buildsomestuff Год назад
@@TrueNorthZero Ah, possibly. If PETG doesn’t do the trick, it’s certainly ok to just pop the tabs off anyways and continue gluing without them. They’re not absolutely necessary, just there to make it a little easier to line up. Best of luck!

@@buildsomestuff Thanks for the advice. Printed the hinge and servo attachment in PETG @ 2mm and i tried to break the tabs off and they held well. Looking forward to your future designs as a Patreon sub.

Very cool. Did you use PLA or something more exotic?
@buildsomestuff
@buildsomestuff Год назад
Thanks! Just PLA here. Although, a more robust material may be better for continuous usage outdoors.
@gabedarrett1301
@gabedarrett1301 Год назад
@@buildsomestuff Be careful; PLA absorbs water over time. I'd recommend PETG for any 3d prints that touch water. Love your work, by the way! I appreciate the parts list in the description too

@buildsomestuff
@buildsomestuff Год назад
@@vishnuchaudhary4425 Oops! I meant to say PETG in my previous message instead of TPU. So, yes, PETG would probably be a better option than PLA. TPU would not work very well for this application because of its flexible properties. Sorry about this!

Ok. Thx for the response.. is the blue cap fixed with the glue for water resistant? Or can you open and close it and have no problems when the boat turns around. Thx

@@danielthur6979 The blue cap/lid is removable. It snaps on and off. I applied a bit of gasket sealer along the rim of the lid to keep water out. I’ve linked the sealer in the description as well.

The airboat looks great (I've just started printing one) but your suggested power system isn't all that good. For spinning a 5" propeller on 3 or 4 cells you'd be better off looking at the motors the fpv drone flying crowd use. 2300kv and 2204 / 2206 size is a good place to start. You could get a lot more performance out of a power system like that with less weight if you selected the right parts.
@buildsomestuff
@buildsomestuff 8 месяцев назад
Thanks for the info! Yeah, I wasn’t too familiar with power efficiency for these types of motors. I just bought what worked for me. Hope all goes well with assembly!
@christophertelford
@christophertelford 8 месяцев назад
@@buildsomestuff I'll give you a shout when I've got mine printed and working if I find a good power system I can definitely recommend. Could you do me a favour and tell me how much one of yours weighs built and both with and without the battery loaded please? It will help me choose the right motor. Thanks.
@buildsomestuff
@buildsomestuff 8 месяцев назад
@@christophertelford Certainly! It weighs 12.55 ounces without the battery and 19.35 ounces with the battery.
@christophertelford
@christophertelford 8 месяцев назад
A quick bit of googling tells me that full sized airboats usually have a thrust to weight ratio of just under 1:1 Using 600 grams as an estimated total build weight a 2300kv motor should be capable of producing about that with 3 or 4 cells and the right 5" propeller.@@buildsomestuff
@christophertelford

Fingers crossed for my first airboat test in a few hours. I've used a BLheli esc which can be set to neutral at the throttle mid point and then opposite directions either side of that. Hopefully my airboat will have a working reverse feature though it'll be interesting to see if the rudder works. @@buildsomestuff
