Me: "Oh, this tutorial should be relatively straightforward and something someone dumb like me can implement fairly easily." Francis: "We are going to start by forcing a pip to plant a wheezewart in a natural tile that I made by deconstructing a manual airlock." Me: *stares blankly, contemplating the hundreds of meaningless hours I have played this game*

I feel like I'm an intelligent person, and you simplify things enough to make them understandable without treating us like idiots. Most other ONI channels either dumb it down to the point of being insulting, or don't explain why things work at all, and just say, "build it this way." Even when showing us one of your standard builds you at least explain things along the way. I have learned at my expense that the vacuum joint isn't as much insulating as you make it sound. The heavy watts wire itself transfer the heat. On a side note, if you have access to supercoolant, a single aquatuner can power three steam turbines placed over a cool steam vent and cool the produced water down to 35°C. In alternative you can place a second aquatuner, run both on the three steam turbines and liquefy hydrogen

TIL that wires (and also pipes, ladders etc) do not conduct heat. I could've sworn they did, but testing the vacuum seal it indeed eliminates 100% of the heat transfer. It seems only the bridges are of concern for heat transfer since even though a wire won't conduct heat to a connected wire, the wire bridge itself will transfer heat between its ends.

I prefer making normal large batteries out of steel. Then you can put them in a steam room and use that heat instead of fighting it. Plenty of empty space in all the steam rooms I've got. It isn't something you can do a lot of early but you eventually have lots of steel and if you really need some back just dismantle them.
@FrancisJohnYT
@FrancisJohnYT 4 года назад
Do you not find that they only half fill unless you force your generators on? It would work for my style of grid also as I burn off excess petroleum I'm just not sure everyone else has gotten into burning off excess fuel instead of storing it.
@0x0404
@0x0404 4 года назад
It seems like different ones fill at different speeds based on proximity to different power generation. I would have thought it was all one system but I guess not. I also have some solar panels that just run forever. So even after my other stuff has turned off those will keep charging.
@drakcoreoriginal
@drakcoreoriginal 4 года назад
I usually only have maybe 5-8 smart batteries on the entire map, one next to each generator set (usually my oxygen generators that self power and leak off additional power, volcano/steam plants and the final sour gas ones) so I can set them to power on and off at x amount of power. Never needed large amounts of batteries. If I had to store large amounts of energy besides storing gases such as hydrogen or natural gas, I would try experiment by converting all excess energy into steam using an aquatuner. Gas doesn't break blocks so keep pumping water into that room when the steam gets over x temp so you can keep dumping more and more energy into that steam room. And to be 100% energy efficient, make sure there is another single block wall around that room vacuumed so no heat transferred.
@FrancisJohnYT
@FrancisJohnYT 4 года назад
You don't use a centralized grid at any point? A batter box is really only good for a centralized power infrastructure design where it can store power for all your power generation sources.
@drakcoreoriginal
@drakcoreoriginal 4 года назад
@@FrancisJohnYT I do. Usually have a central point build around the spawn point, one room centre (spawn room), and a room each side of it, then usually 4-6 levels above and below that. This is the living area for all the dupes where food, entertainment, crops are located. A 1k power transformer at each end of the 2k wire so never a overload and heavy wire backbone each side behind those transformers that tie into the generators and heavy equipment that require higher draws. And heavy wire usually to the volcano generators + one 24 natural gas / sour gas boiler and finally a run to the surface for all the equipment there. My number 1 priority is always have a butt load of power coming in while minimizing usage on everything (even pumps are set on timers / pressure sensors to stop the intermittent pumping). And transferring heat and cold is a must such as metal refineries into steam rooms also used for base cooling. Usually if I have two cool steam vents I build the oxygen generation for 28 dupes first, it will power itself (completely self contained and independent) + 50% extra power for the base that keeps me going with a backup coal gen or two until the volcano / natural gas gens.

about those gas symbol that leaves at the end. what if you connect it to an automation wire and a switch. turn it on, while it drains to vacuum. then turn it of. you can even deconstruct the switch and automation wire, and just leave the one on the pump. a not connected wire is always OFF, so the pump would be "disabled by automation wire" and i think will not show the symbol (but i'm not sure about that, i haven't tried it)
@lucasmurrer301
@lucasmurrer301 4 года назад
You can use a xor gate on 2 smart batteries to fill out the charge on jumbo batteries.. the 2 smart batteries separated by an auto switch and the automation output of each battery connected to the inputs on the xor gate. The output of the xor gate goes into the auto switch. Finally the battery after the switch outputs a signal to whichever generators you want...this way, the generator will charge one smart battery to full, the switch will function and it will need to charge up the other battery too before shutting down... that adds up to 40kJ of charge..
@FrancisJohnYT

Since a domestic wheezewort can cool four times as much it seems worthwhile to just put an autosweeper in there that runs once a day for a second. It can be supplied from the outside. The issue is more that it sucks up dupe labor for resupply. This would be fine if the game had better storage mechanics where you can set a hysteresis at containers. The smart storage bin should have that, but doesn't :/
@FrancisJohnYT
@FrancisJohnYT 4 года назад
That should work just fine, I just dislike dealing with dreckos. Going to have to force myself to play with them one of these days and see if they are worth the effort.
@S_Black
@S_Black 4 года назад
Personal preference of course, but I think they are fun. Regular dreckos are optional later on, but glossy are awesome. Especially if you play slow like me. Then you don't need oil for plastics. I can have transport tubes before oil refining. Just 8 dreckos produce so much plastic. You just need a hydrogen layer on top and oxygen below, which is completely stable at maximum gas pressure. So the room doesn't have to be hermetically sealed. Ranchers can hold their breath for a bit. Regular dreckos are better fed Balm Lily, which needs chlorine at the bottom. That's trickier.

why smart battery and not jumbo batteries, if you're not using the automation?

It's to do with heat generation and power run off. Smart batteries store less power but don't generate nearly as much heat, additionally they have less power loss/bleed so they work our more efficiently. Helpfull videos but one thing annoys me. You can't suck chill, move chill, transfer chill, it's illogical. Chill, or cold is just lower level or (sort of) absence of heat. You can't move lack of something. Only heat energy can be moved, transfered, sucked even. Cold is just a feeling you get from lack of heat. I think it is important.
@FrancisJohnYT
@FrancisJohnYT 2 года назад
Cold/chill is just a lack of energy but it's not how the majority of people think about it. If someone leaves a door open on a cold day we are just as likely to say "stop letting the cold in" as "stop letting the heat out". Though all of that gets even more confusing when describing a plant that can literally break the laws of physics by destroying energy(Wheeze).

The batteries or whatever dump their heat into the hydrogen. The wheezeworts then cool the hydrogen. With a gas with lower HC like oxygen you thus won't get as cold as it can't store as much heat. Sure, a higher TC would speed things up, but first off there just isn't a gas with high HC as easy to get and use as hydrogen. Only steam and supercoolant are any better at all. Second, eventually the system will reach some equilibrium between produced heat and the cooling. How fast that happens doesn't matter. You aren't running a pipe through a cold area at high speed here.

@@FrancisJohnYT I always had that problem, thats why i startet ranching atleast 2 (x8) of each species... since then never had problems with steel. (if you build "normal")

It would be super satisfying if you used natural wheezeworts to cool the entire map down from red to blue on temperate overlay
@FrancisJohnYT
@FrancisJohnYT 4 года назад
With wheeze it would take hundreds of cycles, but in theory it could be done. Would have to go around and insulate all the liquid and gas pipes.

It looks like they've fixed the exploit used at the beginning of this video. Any ideas on how to create a natural tile in space?

Pips are really advance gameplaycritters.... Pinpointing and creating a dirt block is the hard part. Glassy Dreckos are the best btw.

What about ethanol gas though instead of hydrogen?

Ethanol is only gas at above 75C, they batteries would burn out at that temp.

I just found out, using 1 smart battery and connect it to jumbo battery, work the same. Only connect automation cable to smart battery. Of course it will only charge jumbo battery only half, but it has double capacity than smart battery.
@tomdeschutter5997
@tomdeschutter5997 4 года назад
Yes, but as mentioned, the jumbo battery will 1. only charge half 2. generate more heat than a smart battery, so you could use less batteries 3. leak more energy than a smart battery
