I just watched your tech performing the crimp process for the battery cables and I would recommend a re-do with the following changes. A) make sure that the terminals are in alignment with each end as necessary, the cable he built had a twist in it because the terminals were in misalignment to the mounting posts. B) pre-fit or hold the terminal lug up to the cable end to estimate and or mark the proper amount of jacket depth to remove instead of cutting and recutting the cable to fit the crimp portion of the lug properly, use this procedure also to determine the correct heat shrink length. C) avoid using a knife that will cut into or nick the wire strands below the jacket. Try using a rotational jacket cutter to cut through the jacket and avoid hurting or damaging the wire strands. A lot of telecom cable removers use this type of jacket removal process. I will be performing this task later this week and will try to send some pix & or videos for example. Keep up the good work, Regards

Your point B is a good one but, as Jake explained, he did that intentionally to show how to remedy the situation if the cable is cut too long.

do you guys have anything against hydraulic crimpers? I find they perform a much more uniform crimp in a much smaller platform.

Hi guys thanks for the tutorial.I have a question if i may, i have a 24v battery system and want to install a 3000w pure sine wave inverter.What gauge wire would you recommend when the inverter is approximately two meters away from the battery's and what size and type of fuse would you recommend? Thanks learning loads of your channel, Stuart

The inverter manual should have a table making wire recommendations. Double check with the manual, but I'd suggest 2/0 wire and 200 amp fuse.

Would it be a good idea to put a little di-electric grease in the terminal before installing it on the cable or is it not necessary? Thanks! Good video!

We've never done this... anyone else want to share on their experience of doing this.

@@PacificYachtSystems I use dielectric grease on connections where you don't have a better method of keeping water out, i.e. wiring harnesses on 4 wheelers, riding lawnmowers, etc. Basically, things that might get wet during their use, but aren't exactly meant for wet weather conditions, as they do not have waterproof wiring harnesses. Dielectric grease is solely used within a connection to keep moisture out, but it isn't conductive, so it shouldn't necessarily be smothering the connection. For a battery terminal, I would say it is fairly useless, but then again, it probably wouldn't hurt anything, if applied properly. It would make a mess whenever you need to touch the terminals though.

You wouldn’t put a silicone or anti-corrosion inside?
@PacificYachtSystems

Lots of different ways to reduce or delay corrosion on cabling, we use heat shrink terminals or lugs with heat shrink.
@testuser2709

Why aren't you thinning the end and soldering the end and heating it post crimp?
@PacificYachtSystems
@PacificYachtSystems 3 года назад
Since boats are prone to vibrations, we always use a mechanical crimp for a connections.

@@testuser2709 not a boat tech but in aviation it has been proven that tinning/soldering makes the connections brittle and subject to breaking from vibration

This is a direct quote: Per Mercury Mercruiser Service Manual Number 31, Section 4, Electrical System; Battery Cable Recommendations: "IMPORTANT: The terminals must be soldered to the cable ends to ensure good electrical contact. Use electrical grade (resin flux) solder only. Do not use acid flux solder as it may cause corrosion and failure." My guess is that Mercury Marine knows a thing or two about marine wiring.

I have the same tool, it is a FTZ Heavy Duty Lug Crimp Tool. Very nicely made, easy to use, and does an excellent job. I also use the FTZ Heavy Duty Power Lugs, they are much meatier than the Ancor lugs. They have a longer barrel and are marked with the crimp tool setting.

Yep, FTZ is exactly the tool we use overhere.

Using a knife is always a bad idea. If you are forced to, you only score the circumference of the insulation and break it open with the strength of your hands, but you can cut the length - parallel to the direction of the stands to the end of the wire.
