How to make a beaded inlay belt

When a piece of loom work beading is put into a belt, it is most commonly seen simply framed in rather than inlayed. After examining the pitfalls of beaded belts and seeing where the weak points traditionally showed up, I developed this set up and technique for truly inlaying beadwork into a tooled leather belt. Like any skill in leather crafting there are no shortage of techniques or opinions. My way is not the only way by any means but it’s the most reliable way I’ve found to produce a quality beaded belt that will stand the test of time and wear.

OMG< what an attention to detail!!!! I have a beat work from my Great Grandmother, that she made herself and she wore it when communists came to kill her and her husband, but she tricked them by pretending they have typhus. I want to make that beadwork into a belt or a strap for a handbag. Could you do that? Thank you so much!

So I have a question. I love making the bead part. How does a person either sell just the beaded inlay or find a leather person that makes belts like this
@c7customleather
@c7customleather 3 года назад
Belt looks amazing! It’s awesome how you made the shelf off set for the height of the beads. Also how do you fill that glue can without making a mess? Also side note I learned to damp the leather where I skive it seems to cut it smoother.
@joemeling3216
@joemeling3216 3 года назад
Thank you. The glue can actually fills pretty easy as long as you’re a bit careful and don’t get in a hurry. Yes, wetting the leather does make it Skive easier. My only caution is not to get it too wet to where it allows the leather to stretch as you’re pulling your skife. Keeping a sharp blade is really important too. I really should have changed blades but didn’t want to stop in the middle of filming for this.

Awesome!!! What kind of beads do you use? Toho-Beads? Czech glass beads???
@hndygrl
@hndygrl 3 года назад
Hi TheWallaby77. The beads used in this particular belt look to be Miyuki Delica size 11 or so. Delicas are rectangular tubes. The type of bead Mr. Joe prefers are called seed beads or Rondelles. The customer probably used the Delica beads because of their uniformity and consistency in size and shape. Seed beads/Rondelles tend to be less uniform. Delicas are much more expensive than rondelles. Rondelle just means generally round. The beads classified as rondelle could be flat disc shaped, spherical like seeds, or even faceted. A good brand of regular round seed beads is Preciosa, a Czech glass bead. TOHO beads are Japanese and are in between Delica and Seed/Rondelle. They are less round than seed beads and less squared off rectangular than Delicas. Fire Mountain Gems and Beads is a good source for all three, but there are many others. I hope this helps.
