See what it takes to process a big voice voice, captured in a well-treated room with a high-quality interface and a great microphone. The result is outstanding when all of those parts are correctly done using @UniversalAudio UAD Avalon 737 and the @waves Scheps Omni Channel Plugin. Hear how the right processing can make a big voice sound even bigger!

Its very useful to see/hear these differences between raw and processed voice audio. Thanks for showing this in a short, simple, meaningful way!

Very nice, I'll be looking at those plugins. I use full iZotope Music Production Suite(got it for music mostly) and I use SSL plugins with my SSL interface and a MKH416. Down the line I'd love to send something. This week I'm building a recording booth! I tend to personally enjoy wide dynamic range/natural but slightly boosted...but that's just for me lol.

Sounds great! I suggest adding an Izotope RX8 mouth declick, though, as the mouth noises are really becoming more prominent after processing.

Came to say exactly the same, do that and it's sounding good! Any advice on different processing results for different end formats ie audio book vs radio spot etc?
@HeyLennyB
@HeyLennyB 3 года назад
Hi Dobbatron, I get several audio book processing requests and they tend to be much less compressed and more conversational/natural sounding. My focus when creating a custom processing sound is always to help the voice talent to make the strongest emotional connection with their listeners. That all depends on the their voice, content, and expectations. If you do audio books, send me your voice. I'd be happy to show you what the processing would sound like. Thanks for watching!

Daniel. I really like the Scheps Omni Channel by Waves. www.lennyb.com/voice-over-plugins However, don't underestimate the need for a parametric EQ before using a channel strip like the Scheps Omni Channel or Avalon. If you can't get the sound you're after, send me a sample of your unprocessed audio and I'll send you a processed example. Good luck!

Lenny... Is the view you're showing within your DAW or UAudio? I love the VU meter and EQ displays you're using and was wondering. Also would love your review on the Empirical Labs Distressor hardware and plugin. I seem to be using it more than the Avalon these days.
@HeyLennyB
@HeyLennyB 3 года назад
I believe it's Logic that you're seeing. Peter, I use them all, but I love Logic Pro. Also regarding the Distressor, I owned the hardware (a stereo pair actually) and I sold them. I just purchased the UAD software version and it's pretty amazing. I think it would be a great idea to do a processing chain video using it. How about we process your voice for a RU-vid video? Would you send me some info and an audio sample? You can submit here bit.ly/Submit-Your-Voice

@@HeyLennyB will do Lenny...thanks for offering. I do about 5 hours of content every week for terrestrial radio so I'm not doing that much "VO" ...mainly hosting gigs. However, i do have a couple of spots I need to voice in the next week. I'll send you one. So you want flat audio...no processing from me? Maybe I'll send you both. Flat (so you can process) and what I normally do for terrestrial radio production. For terrestrial I think it's important not to over-process since most of the AM stations I'm on are doing quite a bit at the transmitters. (Orbans, etc).
@HeyLennyB
@HeyLennyB 3 года назад
That's a great question. My custom presets include 3 strength levels including Full Processing, Mild Processing, and a Tone Only settings. This way no matter what type of content you're creating, you're covered. I'll keep an eye out for your files!

you really go hard aggressive on that high end bro, sounds good, but tires the ear quickly (audio in this vid), way too much for me, I have to take 16k air down -12db for comfortable listening. But I love your content of course -P

Hi Lenny😊 What’s your reasoning for putting the Avalon EQ after its compressor? I always have trouble deciding whether to put a compressor before or after a sweetening EQ, and I see you’ve kind of done both in this chain.
@HeyLennyB
@HeyLennyB 6 месяцев назад
There's really no right or wrong. It's what you think sounds the best. However, you should understand that the compressor's detector circuit is affected by the EQ if the compressor is after the EQ. When you're dialing in a sound, you need to ask yourself, "Do I want to EQ the compressed sound?" Or, "do you want to Compress the EQ'd sound?" I hope that helps.

awesome demonstration! Having never really learned this but just experimenting, I have always put the expander after the compressor to make up the gain there, so just wondering if there is a reason for doing it the other way around? Also, is the more pronounced 'mouth clicking' after processing something that can be tamed? Thanks so much!
@HeyLennyB
@HeyLennyB Год назад
Hi @scotsmith565. I'm using the expander to only reduce the background noise. I don't use it to "make up gain." I can understand expecting it to do that job based on its name. However, an expander is more like a gate. BTW, experimenting is a great way to learn. I encourage it! I hope my explanation helps.
@scot_smith
@scot_smith Год назад
@@HeyLennyB thank you so much for taking the time to reply! I suppose then it is six of one, half dozen of the other. I do understand a gate is an extreme form of expander just as a limiter is to a compressor and I probably chose to amplify here because I put the expander after (ie I didn’t want to make up gain in the compressor before i lessened the noise with the expander. Of course I still may be misunderstanding the concepts but it is all very interesting! Thanks again!
@HeyLennyB
@HeyLennyB Год назад
Understood!. I've found that usually there's a gain adjustment incorporated within each processing unit so you can gains stage along the way. I think that's a good rule to try and stick to for the best sound.

Hi Lenny, thanks so much for posting this. Very informative. Quick question. Would you recommend getting every one of these plugins? Do I need them all to get that full and warm sounding voice over? Thank you in advance.
@HeyLennyB
@HeyLennyB 2 года назад
Hey Nick, the answer is I doubt it. Each plugin is a tool used to correct or optimize a particular part of your voice sound. Everyone's voice is different. Everyone's room is different, and there are different types of mics. The best thing you can do is learn EQ and Compression. Once you understand how to manipulate and sculpt the sound, then you can choose the specific tools to do the job. You can also send me your voice and I can send you an example of what your voice would sound like with the processing. Visit lennyb.com. I hope that helps!

@@HeyLennyB Thank you so much Lenny, will do that then. I use a Neumann TLM102 and Sennheiser MKH416 depending on the job. I just purchased Pro Q 3 and the Schepps Omni Channel after seeing your review of these plugins. In terms of just voice saturation, making the voice fuller and warmer, would you say that the plugins you reviewed can all do that equally well, or do you have a particular favorite for that purpose? Thanks again very much for your help.

OK maybe a broad question here, Do you still recommend having the DBS286 to use in conjunction with this? I can eliminate not having to purchase the DBS? and just use this software to achieve the end result here?

@HeyLennyB 2 года назад
That's a great question. It all depends on what the destination is for your audio. Do you need to get a processed voice-over sound for live presentations like RU-vid Live or Zoom calls? So you only require your audio to be recorded and then posted (or sent) somewhere later? Or do you need both? Let me know, and I can make some suggestions for you. Thanks for watching!

Then I would suggest you consider processing your audio in your DAW, and not with an external EQ, compressor, and/or channel strip. By processing your audio in our DAW with plugins, you can get an extraordinarily precise optimization. Especially if the room you are not recording in is professionally treated. You can send me a sample of your voice and I would be happy to send you an example of what it can sound like. The plugins compatibility resides with the DAW (recording software), not the computer. So, they can work in either.

I cannot afford hardware Avalons, so what do you suggest to create the same kind of sound and keep the price down? I use Apple Logic ProX . Plans are to get a Neumann TLM 103, and I currently own and record into a Zoom F4 with a Sennheiser MKH 416 in a untreated room. I plan to also get a Universal Audio Quad Processor. Hey Bryan. Thanks for reaching out. I'm sorry for the delay. To get a price quote for your custom processing preset, I first need to get a little information about your system, challenges, and goals. Once I clearly understand the work that needs to be accomplished, I will be happy to send you an itemized quote for the cost of your custom processing preset. There is no charge to demo the sound of your custom-tuned preset. As a result, you can get an accurate idea of how the finished product can genuinely optimize your voice-over sound at no cost. Question for you. So I've been having issue for a week trying to get a voice over right literally tweaking for hours and going back and forth. I have two recordings: 1 is perfect and shes speaking dynamically reading harry potter, quite loud. The other ones she speaking much quieter in a soft voice . The issue i'm having is the quiet ones once compressed etc have a really bad boominess at 200 that I can't for the life of me fix without killing the full range of voice. The closest fix was multiband compressor on lows but still not as nice as the first recording. Now after days of struggling I found a post that said if you are too close to mic that would cause that issue and it's very difficult to fix and even with multiband compression it still wont be perfect. Should I be adjusting the levels higher when shes speaking softly I guess? or is she too close, as far as I know she was same distance for both. Any suggestions?
