I'm just going to chime in and say I bought the plans for your fence a couple years ago, and it's one of the better investments I've made. I've built it twice. I had to build it a second time after I lost the first one in a house fire. Keep in mind, I'm not even that good at wood working - I keep at it, but I'm nowhere near at your level. Still, it's more functional than the fence that came with my saw, which is incidentally a DeWalt, so that's kind of saying something. Just a quick testimony to how easy the plans are to follow and how good the end result turns out for anybody who might be on the fence (pun intended...groan if you wish) about buying any of your plans. They're more than worth the price.

John, I inherited a sharpening stone from my late father in law 20 years ago. That is an exact replica of his box! He was an uneducated finish carpenter that I would match up with anyone anywhere! His formal education was in a wood shop, not a university! If he were alive today he would love the RU-vid channels out there, and would critique them as well!

I’ve been trying to figure out the best way to build something like this for the last couple days.. did a little digging online and of course you’ve got a build video on it. Crazy the content you’ve pumped out over the last decade.. I’ve been watching almost the whole time, hope you know how much it’s appreciated! Keep them coming!

In a follow-up video, John turns the box into a jewlry box for his wife, wraps the stone into a cloth, and says in a following video he will be making a not-so-nice box for his sharpening stone.

I gotta say JH, I like the way you edit. I've made the switch to diamond stones and they are awesome, and I also coat my holder with thick layers of shellac, and I usually don't bother wiping the excess water off, and it's held up well. Although I do want to tinker with oil stones, at least a bit.
@JohnHeisz
@JohnHeisz 5 лет назад
Thanks! I think it could be all the practice I've had doing it :D I've only ever used oil stones, other than a really fine diamond stone I bought to see if it made a discernible difference when sharpening a chisel (I didn't see enough to justify the extra work). Oil stones match my practical approach - they don't cost a lot, work exceptionally well and last forever. Downside is the mess from the oil.

I have some of that masking tape. Aldi stock it here occasionally in Melbourne Australia. Buy it in assorted rolls in packs and is as cheap as chips. Good for masking clamps for glue ups and sticking to the bench and mixing Araldite on. Great box I will make this for my stones. Thank you.

Real nice box, John, makes me want to go out and attempt to replicate it and fail impressively. I thought you might finish it with linseed oil as you mentioned that the stone would be saturated in oil.
@mildyproductive9726
@mildyproductive9726 5 лет назад
LOL for truth. He makes it looks too easy, and his $1.00 box looks better'n anything I made. I also like the linseed idea. I love the linseed oil for shop projects. As long as the wood is smooth, which you can refinish once every few years, scrubbing with steel wool to remove any nap and wiping a new coat, any mishmash of stains is fine as long as the basic color is dark enough. Years of linseed oil and sun will darken the wood, sufficiently, or you could stain it, first. OTOH, unstained plywood coated in poly... not gonna be good when the poly fails in spots. It'll look like shit stains on a porcelain toilet.

Nice work and video - as usual. As the stone is double-sided, could the box be marked appropriately so that the box can be put on the bench right-side-up or upside-down, to get the required exposed grit ? This would save getting oily fingers turning the stone over (but might it need a little adjustment of the dimensions?).
