Last year I began a new gardening hobby, making and training topiary! I was inspired by watching Linda Vater on her channel here on RU-vid also. Last week when I did my Walmart Garden Tour video (which I'll link below), I noticed they had some good candidates for boxwood topiary. I went back and grabbed a couple to work with. I take you along to show you my process for selecting the a boxwood that is a good candidate for topiary training. Do you make topiary? do you have one that you've bought that you have to maintain? comment below! Thanks for watching! -Steph

I recently found a a beautiful green and yellow English Boxwood Variegata for $12.98. It was the only one but had two in the pot that I separated and trimmed up. They look like beautiful bonsai trees. Love the boxwoods for this.

I've never known about how to start these and the processes. Thanks for the video! I'll watch as your plants develop! Cheers Steph!

Hi there, I stumbled across this, I have not seen your channel before, but now I am subscribing and thank you for helping me with more confidence to do topiary ! I’m also taking small boxwoods and doing similar, I made a bit of a study on the growth rate, and you may already know this (or it may not make a difference to you), green mountain is rated as medium to fast (2-4”/year), white winter gem is considered fast-growing at 4-6”/year. However, from my own experience with these two varieties would indicate that the Winter Gem grows faster than that under the right conditions. Winter Gem though will branch out more loosely to be a more vase-like form, Green Mtn more compact and dense. I’m going to be curious to see which is better, maybe neither, for ball forms or spiral. I will have to look at the rest of your videos, do you propagate boxwoods? Like topiary, it is a new endeavor for me, and just about as addictive! Thank you again!

Hi Stephanie! Welcome to my channel, I hope you'll enjoy being here. Thank you so much for the summary of the growth rate on the winter gem, vs. Green mountain! I will have to see how both versions shape up via the topiary! I have about 5 going now. 1 started in 2021, and 4 started in 2022. I agree it's certainly a fun hobby! I have not tried to propagate Boxwood yet, but I imagine that could certainly be fun, and addicting! 🌳

You seem to be snipping off the leader? Won't that make the topiary stop growing upward?
@HookedandRooted
@HookedandRooted Год назад
Hello, Perhaps, but I do want to keep them small and tidy in the pots, so I'm not too concerned. Also, if you wanted too, you could keep a stem that shoots upward growing as a new leader.
@cmcc8947

@@HookedandRooted Ok, thank you for clarifying. I had watched another vid that made snipping the lead seem permanent.

Steph, I got a kick out of seeing George's shadow give you the thumbs-up when you were finished shaping the first boxwood topiary! You guys are so good together, I enjoy seeing how supportive and playful you are with each other. It's easy to see that you adore each other. I also follow Linda Vader on RU-vid, she is a very creative and talented lady, and she loves making topiaries from many different kinds of plants! By the way, your boxwoods topiaries turned out great!

Thank you for taking us along with the shopping, to the shaping of. What a fun idea and for half the cost we can do it ourselves. I think if we do it, we tend to look after them more so then if we just buy a plant that is already done. Enjoy them and have a wonderful day. P.S. Job well done.

This is the first time I have been to your channel! I’ve been loving Linda’s topiaries, but had no idea that even I could possibly make one!!👍 I am wondering if you need to bring them in over the winter, I live in zone 5. Also, what did you spray on your tools before cutting? Great tutorial!
@HookedandRooted
@HookedandRooted 2 года назад
Hi there! Thanks for stopping by. Consider subscribing if you feel inclined. As for the topiary, I'm in zone 6b and I did bring mine in over winter because it was in a Terracotta pot and I know it would have cracked if I left it out as they are nit frost hardy (the pot). However, I'm planning on trying to leave the others out over winter in plastic pots so they can live in their natural environment without me having to care for them all winter. In all honesty I just watered it weekly like a houseplant and misted the leaves periodically to mimic rain. Also, I sprayed isopropyl alcohol on my pruners to disinfect them. Good idea to do between shrubs. I just recycled a bottle and put regular alcohol in it and jeep it in my pocket or apron when I'm working in yard. Making topiary is fairly easy even though it looks intimidating. Just have to know what to look for, and starting with younger plants is typically easier in terms of shaping as it grows.

I really enjoyed watching your tutorial on making topiaries. I definitely will try some! As I watched I also was saying to myself, “I hope she propagates some of those boxwood cuttings!” I have a small hedge of green velvet boxwoods that I grew from cuttings. Takes time but so rewarding to know I can do it. Thank you for sharing.
@HookedandRooted
@HookedandRooted 2 года назад
Hi there! I did keep some! I scraped the bottom of the cuttings and placed them in water until I could figure out what to do with them. Did yours root in water? Or did you use rooting hormones and a potting mix or sand mixture? Thank you!!
@lanadetrick2233
@lanadetrick2233 2 года назад
I stripped off lower leaves of tender sprigs, placed in water for a day, then dipped in rooting compound before putting them in a mixture of potting mix, coconut coir and vermiculite. I experiment a lot. I am experimenting with day lilies. I planted 120 late last spring that were offered in bulk and unidentified. So the fun began when the first ones bloomed last summer. Now they all are up, so it will be more fun this year doing identification. Your landscaping is beautiful. Thanks for sharing. I have gone back a watched many of your videos. Your trip to the daffodil forest was inspiring. We have 3 acres and I have begun trying to move from less grass, so the back acre which has oak trees on it would be the place to experiment with paths and daffodils. God bless you!

@@lanadetrick2233Thank you so much for your advice on starting the Boxwood. I'm going to try it this week. Also, for your kind words and support. I'm always in favor of less lawn. However my husband loves the lawn so it's hard to get him to agree. Although I must say he is mostly supportive of my garden projects and has recently been more flexible and open to my plans. Daffodils are in my opinion the best spring bulbs. So low maintenance, multiple readily through naturalization. They would be a wonderful addition to those woodland areas you describe. Have a great week! 💚
