I also noticed that you carry a leatherman wave(at least I assume it is by the looks) I do as well, what do you use yours for in a survival situation, since you carry a dedicated knife the only things I can think of is pliers(for fine things like pulling string through a hole or getting out splinters) and the saw, isn't that too few uses for such a bulky item(my buck knife which is my dedicated survival knife as its the only things my parents would let me carry is lighter than my leatherman by almost half)?

Hey Lilly very cool candle. I have one little question. Is the "wax" hard or liquid, if the candle does not burn? greets Fritz
@flysubcompact

I found it odd that the birch oil you rendered in the other video was not very flammable. We don't have a lot of birch around here, but I've always noticed that birch bark is like a "go-to" fire starter for northerners (US) and Canadians. You actually use it as a flame retardant in this video. Interesting.
@dutchcourage7312
@dutchcourage7312 9 лет назад
+flysubcompact That is because the birch bark contains volatile oils, some of these components evaporate as you extract the birch bark oil (only the oils that do not reach their gaseous state remain). That is why the birch bark itself is quite possibly the best natural tinder, yet their oil is hardly flammable. Sound contradictive, but now you know why ;)

That is pretty cool that birch oil comes in red bull cans. Now I know why it has wings.

Great video Lilly! We have Honeybees and when we extract the honey we take the beeswax from the cappings that we cut off the frames to then spin out the honey for eating. You don't have to destroy the hive to get the wax that we use to make candles and other things. Just take a little of the wax.

@dutchcourage7312

+Shane McIntosh wonder about that too! ... while it is clear the birch bark oil doesn't, and the pine resin most definitely does... what will the mix do ?
@jonnydongle1588
@jonnydongle1588 9 лет назад
+Dutch Courage my guess is that it goes into either a warm buttery consistently or like a very thick liquid but maybe if it gets cold enough like in winter it could completely solidify

This candle is great! I was wondering what you would do with the birch oil you rendered. Lily, I'd love to see you try and make a kiln and fire a primitive clay bowl or pot from any clay resources you have near you.

In one video you mentioned purifying pine resin. I think it was the pine glue video. Did you ever do a video on the purification process you used for the pine resin itself?
@dutchcourage7312

Great video and cool idea to just test this and see it work. Definitely one to keep in mind, especially since beehives aren't at all common, and while fat or tallow from animals works, at least these materials do not run away :) ...Though some questions remain for a follow up video:1. Does the substance harden, which would mean you could actually transport the candle instead of using it solely at a basecamp.2. What sort of wick materials are available in nature? at first I thought any rope making material (poplar, willow) but then I remembered that for a good working candle you also want a 'rope' that actually wicks up fluids, so the candle burns those instead of the wick. May be an interesting topic for a research video...

Great Video Lilly! Map&Compass Reading Please!!! If you'd do a MAP&COMPASS video you'd get another 500K..lol! I don't know how you can have a survival channel without several map and compass vids. Anytime you go into the woods you should have a compass and I've NEVER seen you use one. Matter of fact I haven't even heard you mention it. Do you have any map&compass skills???I'm going to keep reposting this comment until I get an answer....lol! I'm JK but it's SO IMPORTANT!! I think you're doing a disservice to folks if you don't mention how important this skill set is. Since it can most definitely SAVE YOUR LIFE!! I've heard you mention everything else but not Map & Compass skills. I mean you constantly talk about bow drilling which isn't even close to being as important as Map&Compass skills! You mention in this video about the importance of being mentally and physically strong. I know going in the right direction and knowing where you are and how to get from point A to Point B would make me VERY mentally HAPPY! And as far as conserving energy not going in circles will definitely help. I keep mentioning this because of its importance. Thank You!!

Your birch oil is a little time consuming but would also work as a bug repellent when burned. Alternates might be animal fat from hunts, butter, lard and some types of cooking oil.

I'm curious (and will likely have to try it out myself) if using a mix of Pine Resin and Pine Tar (the byproduct of the charcoal process) would create a similar resulting candle material? do you happen to know ma'am?

Hmm... something to make and sell in your Amazon store perhaps? How did you make the wick? Foil and twine?
@DocLarsen44

Along with the fat wick you used, that candle was putting out a lot of light without having a very tall flame. That would seem to be an ideal light source (I am sure it would have appeared much brighter had it been totally dark when filmed.) Great find. Lilly.

I'd have to say it matters where you live. Apparently in Austria they have a plethora of birch and pine trees but few bees. I on the other hand live where there are almost no birch or pine trees. Firs don't work. I do however know a few beekeepers if I wanted to make candles. That's what Lilly was saying you can make candles from materials around you.

you could also use animal fat in the candle.. I've used pig fat and deer tallow before. Both burn for quite a while. I'm not familiar with birch oil, but I think it stays in a liquid state which makes it susceptible to spilling.
