Couple things to help elucidate: what yer calling "master links" are known as "presets" (with rivets spun on) and "tie straps". They are specific to a given make/model/gauge/pitch of chain- don't mix em. Chain length is given as #DL, that is, number of DRIVE LINKS, which are the "shark-fin" thingies that ride in the bar groove and engage the sprockets. Peening rivets is for emergencies only. Northern Tool has a good bench-breaker/spinner under $100. Granberg makes a portable breaker/spinner for $50-something- better at spinning than breaking. Hammering can crack rivets- a no-no.

I think one of the biggest mistakes I have seen people do with their chainsaw is either having the chain too tight or too loose. Too loose and the chain can come off easily while in use. Too tight and you make your chainsaw work harder that it needs to. Good video. Thanks for sharing.

I have respect for people like you who love to teach others how to do a trade, in my life Ive ventured into many different fields and industries as a mechanic, a certified crane operator, an iron worker, and more, and now into real estate as an agent in California... ive ran in to soooo many people who just don't want to show you anything, i hated it, but im glad it was like that in a way because i learned the hard way which stuck with me more. I have a lot of respect for people like you who take the time to make the world a better place from the heart. Mad respect sir!! Thanks

Am reticent to speak up. But I think it's the drivers you count (look like sharks teeth). Then you would not have to back up one. When tightening the chain and bar on the saw, the slack must be taken out of the fit of the bar. Simply hold the bar nose up just enough to take the little bit of slack out of the bar. And if the chain is just properly tight, then snug up the bar nuts.

This is very useful knowledge. I looked up the price of rolls of chain and have decided to build several spare chains for each of my two saws. Why not. Any one who knows how to drive rivets can do this straight away. If not any video on back riveting aircraft parts will be very helpful too. Riveting is riveting. Just pay attention to rivet height.

Dear Wranglerstar, I really appreciate the simplicity of the video by just using a punch and hammer to make a chain. I might still want to get a breaker and spinner, but its nice to know basic around the shop tools will work. Thanks for an excellent video that I will watch many times!!!

We had a lot of trees down this year on our shoot in Hampshire UK, big beech and oak smashed our pens to bits, so the saw was working overtime. We were stupid enough to let someone have a loan of it, must have been cutting rocks cause it came back knackered. As its at least £20 a go for made up chains, we kept on trying to sharpen it. A lot of our buddys use saws for clearing as well, so your idea of buying lengths sounds good. Not a problem making lengths as a few of us are bikers and quite conversant with making up chains. Dont know why nobody thought of it before, thanks for advice Cody. Going to subscribe to your channel now, good to see there are still some proper americans left. you were recommended by Rob Bixby by the way. Gods grace be with you and yours.

You made it so easy to understand. Now I know I can do it - saving time and money. I've subscribed to your channel because you also seem very honest and patient enough to teach others. Honest, patient, with know-how - well that's a trifecta for sure. Thank you!

For complete chain bar maintenance . Not only ensure oil holes on both sides of the bar are clean and but, in addition, clean the interior of the bar slot with either the Oregon slot tool or similar or even a clean putty knife prepared with kerosene/gasoline, scrape and clear with high-pressure air. This will ensure the fresh bar oil will travel the full length of the bar unimpeded by dirt or sawdust build-up!

regarding the mushrooming safety comment... super important to remember. most times those tools are not hardened at the striking area but are not super soft either, and do have internal stresses. once a shard comes loose those stresses can assist in turning that small shard into a harmful projectile.

I noticed on these chains if a link does get to tight and won't smoothly move on the pins/rivets that you can put a hard tool like a chisel in between the link where it is open air space ( like in between the two "link' sides and on a hard surface like an anvil, hit fairly hard with even a claw hammer on the chisel and the link will loosen enough to work good again. Gotta be careful and not damage the link when doing it but solves the problem I found out and does seem to get you back "sawin" again making progress.

I used a vice grip chain breaker for 20 yrs. I had my 100' roll of chain in my pickup, it would take about 5 minutes to make a new one up. If i had a broken side strap on my chain, i'd fix it with out taking the chain off the saw. 55 yrs ago when i broke my chain, i fixed it with a flat file, 3/4" socket and used a nail for a punch. When fixing a used chain, you have to use used chain straps, new ones cause the chain to loosen and tighten up.

Cody you ever look into carbide for your chain saws.. they are almost indestructible ..hit the dirt or a piece of hidden wire not a problem.. but are not cheap, but 1 will outlast at least 6 well cared for blades.

I'm a new subscriber and have enjoyed at least a dozen or more of your videos and I love your spirit in the Lord as well. This video was good as far as showing you how to attach the master link and count your links but it would have been helpful to know what size or type of chain for a particular bar. I took my 16" husky to our local saw shop to have the chain replaced and the chain he first put on wouldn't slide on the bar and had to use a pole saw chain. I'm pretty new at using a chainsaw and have been gathering all the info I can to educate myself, mostly sharpening and maintaining my saw. Your vids almost always put a smile on my face and I appreciate how hard you and Mrs Wranglerstar work. Thanks, Jack G.

good video - My wife bought me a ROGUE 7" Tomahawk hoe a couple months ago and I didn't really get a chance to use it until last week when I used an excavator to dig a 700 ft water supply trench at the farm; I used the Rogue to pull dirt on the 1.5" PVC supply line just to give it some support in the ditch before using the blade to cover it - what a great little tool, has the weight to dig in a pull dirt I used to use a shovel for. Then when the plumber installed 190 ft of 4" drain piping he used it to pull dirt back in the ditch to support the pipe before using the excavator blade to cover the drain system and his crew loved the Rogue. I had a hard time keeping track of it to the point I was afraid they were going to toss it on their truck so I finally confiscated it. One last issue with the Rogue - when the UPS delivered it you could tell they dropped it and I had to 'ping' draw out the dent in the blade - they need to cover the blade edges with something a little more substantial then cardboard.
