How to make a Coconut Palm Leaf Hat - Part 1 of 2! 

That looked painfully difficult to explain David and absolute top marks for giving it a damned good go. I think I followed it and am looking forward to part two. I would imagine this is the birth of hat making to keep sun out of workers eyes and it probably has equivalents in straw and other materials. The palm version looks awesome. In olden times people living in coastal areas of Kerala used coconut palm leaves for thatching of houses. പഴയകാലത്ത് കേരളത്തിലെ തീരപ്രദേശവാസികൾ തെങ്ങോലകൾ വീടുകളുടെ മേൽകൂര കെട്ടുവാൻ ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരുന്നു ( Malayalam).

Can anyone tell me if they have the same issue? No matter what I do, I can't get the hole on the top to close up like he does in the video. I've worked it every which way and the smallest that I can get the hole is 1.5 inches across. I've tried hats using the frond formula 3-8-7, 3-8-8, 3-8-7, and 3-6-7 (if you watch the second videos, you'll know what I'm talking about). Any suggestions?
