Over the years, I've tried every type of composting system, from open piles to expensive, dual-bin, closed devices. Yet my system of choice is when I made a compost bin for free using shipping pallets. And it's what I still use today, 10-years and counting. You can make it in less than 20-minutes. All you need is a box of screws and a drill. Then, watch Joe's Organic Gardening playlist: • Organic Gardening

I have done this before and it worked great. Lots of places are happy to give them away. I even got the posts for free from a lumber supply store. They threw out any that were split on a pile. They were also happy to get rid of them.

I only do a summer garden. In the off season I compost directly on top of my garden. Since I fish year round I bury my fish remains about 16"-18" deep, fill the hole with compost, replace the soil. Awesome but just do not walk barefoot in the garden. Bones are turned over each time since I have been doing this for years! They quickly breakdown though once exposed to air.

I bet your soil is amazing! Such a great way to improve it and make the most of recycling those fish remains.

I was hoping for something a bit more detailed than 1. get a bunch of pallets and 2. join them together. Because I did and they are falling apart! Also be good to know how you break apart pallets without the wood splintering. But I'm being picky. Good to recycle!
@awinbisa

he didnt break them apart, thats the good thing. Just join them together with screws as they are.

If you’re talking about the panels that were added to the interior of the pallets, you should be able to find a decent pallet buster for around $40 to remove them.

Over the weeks add kicthen oil and fat. Then in cooler weather add wood ash from the woodburner...... I did. It worked. Three o'clock in the morning I was with the fire people trying to extinguish the fire! Lovely warm compost heap😳🤣

I can't imagine the chemicals they treat the pallet wood is good for composting...
@joegardenerTV
@joegardenerTV 9 месяцев назад
That's why it's important to know what you're working with and avoid the ones treated with Methyl Bromide (stamped MB on the wood) as I discuss. I use "Heat Treated" (stamped HT on the wood) or virgin hardwood pallets. But you correct; do not use chemically treated pallets.

I found that I had to have a sufficient amount of material to compost before composting actually started. It was about 4’ deep and needed to have regular watering. We had an acre yard so lots of grass clippings and leaf fall. I also put all kitchen scraps, ash and anything else that would compost. We got free horse, cow and turkey manure and cotton spoils from a cotton gin. We collected seaweed and oyster shells from the coast. When people bagged their leaves in the fall, we would ask if we could haul them off. We were dedicated organic gardeners. Who needed a gym membership? We worked on it every weekend year round!

How do you control pests like rats from nesting?
@joegardenerTV
@joegardenerTV 6 лет назад
It has a lot to do with the ingredients you put into your compost pile. Definitely keep meat, cheese, and dairy out. Pests like rats are especially attracted to high protien ingredients. So if you just focus on plant-based food scrps and yard debris, along with paper products, you should be in great shape in avoidling visits by unwanted pests.

Not much here. What about the different kinds of pallets? U.S. pallets are pretty safe. but international pallets could have been chemically treated for pests which is a poisonous chemical. Other international pallets could be heat treated or kiln dried to kill pests which is fine. My big issue with open composting is that they tend to draw the animals from the neighborhood. My neighbor just dumps her stuff in a pile in the shade of her trees. Egg shells, clam shells, etc. get dragged all over our yard because of the raccoons and possums. Fortunately I haven't seen rats yet and it's been a few years.

In an urban environment don't you have to worry about attracting mice and rats??
@joegardenerTV
@joegardenerTV 5 лет назад
John Herman if you put food scraps into the pile maybe so. But if that's an issue use a closed bin system.
@Nobody-11B
@Nobody-11B 5 лет назад
Food scraps usually mean only uncooked veggies and the like. No meat, dairy or cooked food. It's worked for me and I live in a developed area, some smell is to be expected buy rats and peats haven't been an issue.
@debiulrey-crosby4520
@debiulrey-crosby4520 3 года назад
@@Nobody-11B you can use cooked vegetables and foods as long as there isn't a lot of fatty substance with it.So left over cooked broccoli, beans, carrots, baked potatoes, etc. can be added as long as there isn't a ton of fat (butters, cheese, etc) on them. And a small amount of fat won't be a problem. If the compost is done correctly with brown & green materials and as it begins heating up, you won't have an issue with critters. I live in the country with moles, mice, raccoons, skunks, etc. and have no problems whatsoever. My compost pile is completely open too - literally just one big pile. Love that so many are composting now. 😀
