I like putting in the diffuser before hanging the shade - it makes it easier to get it to sit flush around the rim of the embroidery hoop. As for hanging the shade, it's true that there isn't much room to work with to get the last hook in but you can bend and reshape the hooks to get it to fit and make the shade level. I've installed these many times and haven't had any problems, but every light fixture is different. Hope this helps!

I have fluorescent ones in my ceiling fixtures and for my drum shade pendant lamps, I use Phillips AmbientLED bulbs which are great - they hardly give off any heat and they work with dimmers.

Lots of great tips. My favorite is the use of binder clips to clamp the work together. What didn't work was using the outer embroidery hoop to outline the diffuser. Unlike the inner hoop, the outer loop was uneven on its own. Thank you very much!

This is EXACTLY what I've been trying TV to figure out. I have these s as me discussing light fixtures in my hallway. I hate it. I can5 wait to get started. This is another good pandemic project. You can install eye hooks in the ceiling around the recessed lighting fixture and hang the drum shade from that but I would only use LED light bulbs in the recessed fixture so there isn't too much heat generated and leave some space between the fixture and the ceiling so there is some airflow.

Very cool. I work with electric. Light fixtures are the "fountain soda" of home improvement and lighting stores. It costs very little, the light fixture itself is super simple and cheap, they add decorations to it and change you a fortune. It's really ridiculous what the profit margins are on them. I wish I had found this tutorial before I made a drum shade for a chandelier. It was difficult to find parts for a 24" shade. My biggest problem is that I did not have stiff paper between the upper and lower rings. Next time, I'll use your helpful tutorial! Thanks.

Every light fixture is different so I can't say what would work for yours - I do recommend using LED light bulbs since they give off the least amount of heat.

I just love all the pointers you give throughout to help give us confidence to get it done without running into preventable mistakes and to make it as foolproof as possible. I want to add a drum to already existing chandelier. Any advice on how to do that in a sleek way? I wish you spoke on how to make sure the fabrics are heat tolerant for those of us not using fluorescent lights. Thanks again.

Every light fixture is different but in general, I recommend leaving enough distance between the light fixture and the poster board to allow for good air circulation to let any heat generated dissipate and I also recommend avoiding light bulbs that generate a lot of heat, like incandescent ones. I love how in every Video just when you Show a Step You Always have a Second Step that takes each piece from Nice to Fantastic. I just bought some Silver Rub n Buff for a Lg Gold Trimmed Mirror. Im a bit leary to use it as I do not want it to look like I just Slapped some Cheap Silver Paint on it. Id love to know your thoughts. TFS

The main thing to think about with the fabric is how much light you want to show through. White poster board does let light shine through and the color and thickness of the fabric will impact how much you end up seeing through the shade. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!
