I must say I am a experienced sewer and I think this is the best video of any kind that I have seen and I have watched many of them. You know how to get your point across and you have a lovely speaking voice. I have a large Chihuahua and this is going to be perfect for her... Thank you for this wonderful video... I have been trying forever to get some knitted sweaters done. They are never going to get finished. So I am going to get a couple of these done for my doggies. With this cold weather they need extra help staying warm. Thanks sugar!
Great Video! Its a great idea for a simple sweater, and with as rough and dirty as my dogs can get, I didn't want to spend hours making a sweater they might ruin in a day. This is so perfect. Great step by step approach

To take it a step further when I made a similar one 2 yrs ago, A simple 1/4 inch seam was used around each armhole. This follow the use of a circle template from a jar lid. It was cut to the desired width, adding a 1/4 in. seam allowance. This means the armhole has is 1/2 in. less than the finished opening, in diameter. This to allow for the neatly sewn seam allowance...Then the stretchy fabric was applied as the neck was done: a 2 in.strip was folded to one inch and cut 1/4 less than the circumference of the circle. The strips were hand baste-stitched followed by the machine stitching. Either way is cute.
I've been looking EVERYWHERE for a sweater with a turtle neck! My pit tends to stretch regular sweaters until they droop down his legs. Thank you for posting this! I'll be sewing my dog a real sweater now
Excellent and it fit Foster exactly! I made one from a recycled sweatshirt and now I can get fancy =) Thank you so much, this is a terrific and easy shirt to make! Your directions are easy and clear and the process works beautifully. Your pit bull is about 2X the size of my Foster, but following your directions I was able to get it right the first time.
Thank you! Your video is so practical, easy, and no-nonsense. You're a wonderful teacher. Because my Wheaten Terrier is slender in the neck and deep in the chest, I made this your way, put it on her inside out, then used safety pins to make it fit her chest better, replaced the safety pins with sewing pins and sewed along that line. I cut up old fleece pants to make a trial shirt, which I then cut in half and marked as a pattern. On the final garment I hemmed the edge and put sleeves in it shaped like human sleeves in sewing (hem the sleeves before you sew the underarm seam and be sure to try the sleeves on the dog before sewing them to the shirt). It's a perfect fit, she loves it, she looks great in it, and there's no hook-and-loop needed. Now I have a wonderful pattern to follow next time and a shirt that will launder like a dream. No more watching her shiver in cold weather after a haircut. Big e-hugs to you!
Vanessa did you forget to tell us to add seam allowances when we cut out the fabric? I went ahead and added 1 inch to allow a half inch seam allowance and it worked perfect. Thank you for the great tutorial. My dog loves his new jacket!
This is such an easy to follow tutorial. I absolutely love the results I achieved. I love how simple the basics of this patter are and you can add finishing touches if you like. I even altered the length measurements by making it longer on the back and rounded off near the underbelly. So simple! I have already purchased more fabric to make another one!

Thank you for such a simple and easy project! My pro tip is fabric choice- must have good give! The super soft fleece worked best for me! Also, I taperd the bottom to ensure it would stay dry durning potty walks!
Hello, first off I love your video! So easy to follow along. I'm creating my first shirts for my bullmastiffs. They are a little on the chunky side. My male belly is 35" circumference. I tried the minus 8" for his neck but his neck measures at 23.5". If I subtract more off the neck would it still match up like yours? Any help would be very much appreciated. I'm trying to make them shirts so they can be Dalmatians for Halloween, my daughter likes to include them with her costume, she is being Cruella De Vil this year. Thank you for your time!

*Awe look at Butterball sitting there all patient and cute lol!! My pup LOVES wearing sweaters and coats when it's cold!! He's a staffy/lab mix (i think lol). So he's tall like a lab, but he's got the bully muscles which makes his size a lil harder to fit normal sizes!! He's about 115lbs, with a broad chest and thick neck... but if I buy to fit his neck and chest, the shirts are always way to long (and hard to wear of he's gotta go potty!! Also, my mom has a St. Bernard, and it's really hard to find him tops!! I should make dog apparel especially for those different sized pups and animals!!*

I love how you go step-by-step and explain why its done that way.... but once you cut the holes in for the legs, all I could see was a mask for robbing banks LOL....but this has given me the confidence to make a couple for our boxer which might be a little tricky because of the barrel chest.
Great project, but I wonder why you removed your sewing machine platform to use the free arm, then didn't use it? You could have turned the project inside out and used the free arm. It may have been good for folks to see how to use it. You could have done it your way without removing the platform. Just curious.
I am not an experienced sewer, but I do know how to make odds and ends kind of things. However, I am completely struggling with the collar or neck. I can't get it to work. I follow your directions to a T and the fabric doesn't stretch enough it seems like. I am not sure how to get it to work :(. I made one but its all bunched up in certain areas. You can't really tell because it looks like a pleat.. but I want it to look perfect. I have a 14 year old cocker spaniel and she is always freezing.
My pup loves his and it's obvious. Arm holes in mine need some adjustment but he's so thrilled that he's warm that he's lying still, straight out, in obvious comfort. Lol

Great informative video. I found that for people that don't sew or have become unable to do so can still make these pullover sweaters. Goodwill has wonderful bins of clothes like sweat pants and shirts in xx-large. All that is needed is to get one leg or arm depending on the size of the dog, cut a scolloped design from the base of their belly up the side, going back towards the tail to the base of the back and over to the other side [to cover the hip area]. Maybe you can show a video of this also easy project. Thanks for all the great videos.
Butterball looks very warm and in style. Now all he needs is a rain coat for when it rains. Vanessa I have a (?) to ask you. On some of the tutorials I have seen that the individuals cover the name of the sewing machine & some not. Why?
my daughter's frenchie, as all frenchies, have big heads. the suggestion to do the circumference minus 8 didn't work at all. so I ended up making a new one with the same circumference as the belly. Also - my daughter wanted the harness to be under the sweater. frenchies need to wear harnesses. if i make it again, i'll make the circumference about an inch bigger to allow room for the harness, the finished product fits, but its a little snug. but still an easy pattern and good directions., just modify it to fit big heads, etc.
I accidently made the neck part to big so I added another neck tube. it worked out the extra band was perfect around her wide pit bull chest so it doesnt ride down. Thank you so much your awesome!!!

I have a 6lb chihuahua and we had so much snow this year that when I tried to get her some snow boots they were tooooooo big. Can you do a video on doggy shoes/boots? 😃 I though of using some baby socks but they were still too big so I need your crafty brain to help 😉

I made a fast one this morning by cutting the sleeve off of a sweatshirt and cutting a couple holes on the sides for his legs. -19 degrees here is too cold, even with a fur coat.
do you have a pattern and or tutorial on how to make a cover for a baby car seat? not a tent........I need to make the cover for the seat area itself....
i would believe so... just follow the direction of the sizes that she mentioned and do that.. but the legging holes part.. hmm, I would think little bit similar places. Try it and see how it turns out. Trial and error.
