I inlayed the area of the scribe line once. I like the scribe line but some don't particularly non- woodworkers. One could also widen the scribe line with router bit or by hand and would probably not be noticed by non- woodworker. Some folks consider the dovetail as an unattractive joint that should be hidden, thus the half blind variety and decorative molding. Hard for one design to please everyone! Excellent job, regardless.

Do you think it would be more useful to the average woodworker to cut the mortises another way because not very many people would have a hollow chisel mortiser? Also, how do you apply glue fast enough to keep it from setting up? I have so much trouble with gluing up a project. I do everything I can to get ready to glue-up but it's always a pain. I think you have about the best videos on YT. The blanket chest looks so nice.

Beautiful work and very well done. I will say though that I hate those scratches from the dovetail gauge line. Such a beautiful finish with this inconsistent scratch across it. I have been woodworking over 40 years and used to leave them too but no-one who wasn't a woodworker understood them. I would hear...it's great but what's that scratch? I started thinking about it and started to agree. It's just a layout line...like a pencil line. I felt like they needed to be removed and I have never looked back. I guess it's personal taste but woodworkers seem to be the only ones that like it.
@Simplecove
@Simplecove 7 лет назад
Honestly I didn't expect the scribe lines to be so deep. The Mahogany was really soft and my marking gauge made deeper lines that I thought. But in the end i'm fine with them. I did try to remove them but didn't notice they were still there until after the first coat of finish. Thanks for watching.

Thanks for showing your work. I think you have a right eye and skilfull hands for the job. You manage to give lifting touch what makes this heavy furniture to look lighter. This something not everyone can do. I have question about your desinging. Did you use golden ratio or how you determine dimensions for this box.
@Simplecove
@Simplecove 6 лет назад
Thanks Matti, for the kind words! I appreciate it. For the size of the blanket chest I simply looked at what's been built before mine and decided on the dimensions based on what I found to look right to me.

Quick question: do you think I can decently flat surfaces with a hand planer? In wanted to build a box for a different purpose and I don't have access to a large dedicated planer.

Great work. I have a question for you: Have you heard of the "Golden Ratio"? Do you use it on projects such as the Dovetailed Blanket Chest?
@Simplecove
@Simplecove 6 лет назад
Thanks! Yes, i've heard of the Golden ratio but didn't use it for this design. I researched blanket chest sizes and ended up going with a size that looked good to me and fit the area that it was going to go.

Why the plywood?
@Simplecove
@Simplecove 6 лет назад
Because it's stable which means it won't move and plus it's always covered by blankets so no need to spend more money on solid mahogany for a hidden panel.

@africancichlids3011

why use plywood on solid wood build . seems like a bad idea , shoulda made panels as u did with sides. just an opinion
@Simplecove
@Simplecove 7 лет назад
Why when the plywood bottom wont move like solid wood and it's cheaper to use plywood. Also, you only see one face of the bottom panel so why make it out of solid wood?
@africancichlids3011
@africancichlids3011 7 лет назад
Better quality. Just an opinion..
@africancichlids3011
@africancichlids3011 7 лет назад
Because you went through the trouble of making it all fancy. Why worry about saving. 40 $
@africancichlids3011
@africancichlids3011 7 лет назад
Would you use plywood on a jewelry box .. I wouldnt ?
@Simplecove
@Simplecove 7 лет назад
It's more than $40 actually with time and tool use. Also, I didn't have enough material so I would have to drive back to the sawmill for more. And a bottom for a jewelry box is way smaller so thats comparing apples to oranges in my opinion. I've veneered plywood bottoms for jewelry boxes plenty of times.
