How to make a Duct Tape Dummy - Mannequin
Link to Supplies needed: kit.co/Cosplay...
If you are like me and have tough time patterning without a mannequin, you are in luck because in this video you are going to discover how to make a duct tape dummy mannequin of yourself. Trying to get the sizing and scaling just right, not enough hands when you try to draw designs or get sizing holding it up to your body.
Mannequins can be expensive and they don't match your body type exactly and in order to by a full body cast mannequin then you are really getting pricey!!
Well, fear not because I have the perfect solution for you, you can clone yourself completely using nothing but duct tape and tin foil. You can make a duct tape dummy, dress form, and best of all a full body life-size mannequin of yourself that fits your proportions perfectly and will allow you to make your patterns easy and give you confidence that they will turn out and work well so you don't waste precious materials with trial and error.
I hope you find this helpful! If you make your own duct tape dummy/mannequin using this technique please tag me on instagram, twitter, or facebook! I would love to see your creation!

I've watched many videos on this, and they are either overcomplicated and sturdy, like painting plaster of paris and foam or simple duct tape filled with newspaper. This combines the two, makes it more sturdy than the either, and even has detachable arms. Fantastic, thank you.

I was going to do this in 2020 and then covid happened. I pretty much gave up on it, even had pvc pipes in my garage for a long time. Then christmas of last year I had to plan out a cosplay and I couldn't not have a mannequin of some sort. So today, after almost 2 years, I finally did it. Thanks to you and Barefoot Props

Ooh. This would be ideal for my headless horseman! His body is made from PVC wrapped in pool noodles, but this would eliminate the need to lash him down to something to keep him upright. As for a name...Dougal, which is Irish for "dark stranger." (Or Dugald if you want to go Scottish.) Or Crane (as in Ichabod).

Interesting techniques! I like the idea of the tin foil and the hash marks to line up post cuts. I'm building a bunch of mannequins for all my suits of Armor, and I'm not happy with my current methods. Also, the expanding foam is a great idea!

Thank you, it’s very helpful I’ve started making fur suits and am using the same character as a practise so I can get really good! But I’m just wondering if I could use 1-2 inch foam and then do all the wrapping (tinfoil and duck tape) on the foam to keep it together?

Heyy I really loved the tutorial!!! But I have a question... I mean, there's a lot of different bodies... How do you do with clients? You actually need to have the client at your house and duct tape them? XD after my question~ the tutorial was awesome
@kimwarburton8490
@kimwarburton8490 Год назад
Is the metal foil necessary due to chemical reaction? vrs seran wrap/cling film (uk) iv seen in other duct tape dress-forms, which is a LOT cheaper XD Also, how much foil did you use if it is a necessary item I was gunna make a fabric shell dressform with a PDF pattern and stuff it with straw originally (to avoid microplastic issues), but money is a consideration, esp for my first one (and the hope that i will lose excess weight), so this looks like a cheaper option, while still ticking all the boxes :D
@CosplayApprentice
@CosplayApprentice Год назад
You might be able to get away with seran wrap but I find aluminum foil hood it’s shape a little better which will make it easier for pouring the expanding foam. It doesn’t take a ton of aluminum foil(cooking foil/tinfoil) one largish package of it should be enough. :)
@kimwarburton8490
@kimwarburton8490 Год назад

How do you make sure you've lined up the pipes in the torso halves exactly to fit together? I ran into this issue with expanding foam in a spray, but since I hadn't filled the torso completely, I was able to shift it around inside. Also, what happens if you spring a leak during the fill process?

Hey there. Is there a easy (and non-toxic) way to make the outside of the dummy hard/rigid enough so I can use a heat gun safely on it to form large pieces of foam ? I would really like to avoid using fiberglass and epoxy for this. Thanks to answer.

I'm wondering if this foam would be strong enough to hold my bodyweight with a pocket skeleton for a turtle position mma striking dummy? Do you think it would be durable enough to spin on it on all 4s like a wrestler & take hits? Super curious 🤔
@CosplayApprentice
@CosplayApprentice 3 года назад
Good question :) The expanding foam I used is pretty durable but I don't know how well it would hold up to repeated striking.

Just wondering, why didn't you take off the duct tape and foil after the foam, and take a rasp to sand down the foam, so it looks better, and will be closer to your size?
@CosplayApprentice
@CosplayApprentice 3 года назад
The expanding foam is very messy and if it is just on its own can have pieces chip off easily. So the tinfoil and tape help contain and protect it. Also the added thickness is helpful, when creating patterns off of it, I like to have it be a little larger than my actual size because it helps to account for for thickness. :)

@@fakermakerprops3948 i think if you use the yellow cheap expanding foam from Walmart it would have the ability to shave and clean it up like your wanting. We use it for fake rocks in reptile enclosures form it then little paint.
@CosplayApprentice
@CosplayApprentice 3 года назад
I have seen others try to use the spray expanding foam for things like this but they all tended to end up with the foam not expanding fully into the entire space and they often ended up with lumpy results :/. That's why I used the foam that I used because it had a lot stronger reaction and expanding effect and dries relatively solid. You can shave and shape it down, and I did in some spots but it leaves a big mess to clean up. :)

@CosplayApprentice
@CosplayApprentice 3 года назад
This is pretty fast, compared to other methods of pouring actual casts and things, or of trying to make one out of foam or something else. Using the post filler expanding foam really speeds it up and gives you a firmer mannequin compared to string to stuff it full of batting or grocery bags and stuff. You can do this from start to finish in a weekend or probably even just a Saturday if you wanted to :)
