Connecting a micro Euro nymph leader to a Euro nymph fly line can be a challenge. Most connections are either weak or do not go through the guides smoothly. In this video, I show you how to create a micro loop on the end of your line that you can tie your leader directly to like it is the eye of a fly.
If you would like to see how to connect thicker Euro nymph or other leaders to a braid core line, you can see my Superglue Fly Line Splice 2.0 at this link. • Fly Line Superglue Spl...

Recently learned a needle nail knot using the C&F tool for micro leader which I was supergluing and would fail periodically. Luckily I would test it before fishing, rather it fail while fishing. And Mr. Olsen has another great alternative knot to try for micro leaders. I will compare the two for personal preference and how they perform under different circumstances. Thank You!

I've repaired floating lines, but needed to repair my Euro line loop as I'm going to try using the two different leaders you and Lance talk about in the "Nymphing Elevated" vid, which I finally bought and watched last week. Ted, Airflo's Euro line does have a braid core I believe but it is likely their power core that they use in their other lines. That core tends to fray when you expose it so it would likely be difficult to use in a micro loop.

I love the channel and site. I purchased 2 of your videos in the past and I've learned a ton from you guys. Ever use a double uni knot to attach braided core fly line to thin leader butt? I'm on the coast here in NJ and use it to attach mono backing to braided line on the spinning reels I use for surfcasting. It's a strong, slim knot and similar in look to a blood knot. I bet the braided core would knot well to the thin mono leader butt. Super curious what you think. Thanks heaps!
@tacticalflyfisher3817
@tacticalflyfisher3817 3 года назад
Joe, If you're tying a uni knot (half of the double uni) in your fly line, I can't see how that wouldn't leave a lump that would catch in the guides. Maybe I'm not visualizing how you're using the knot correctly. This micro loop has worked very well for me after trying several other methods though so I don't have a reason to change at this point.
@JoeMairo
@JoeMairo 3 года назад
@@tacticalflyfisher3817 Hey, if it ain't broke don't fix it! I should have made this clearer. I meant using the double uni only after stripping the fly line coating off like you showed. So you'd be doing the double uni with braid core and the mono leader butt. Similar to how I do it on my surfcasting set ups. I'd think that'd leave a slim and strong connection. Just like how you can strip the coating off a mono core European nymphing line and blood knot the mono core straight to the mono leader butt. What do you think? Thanks for the quick reply!

Given the current trend towards eliminating the loop-to-loop connection, maybe more so in the euro nymphing community, do you believe commercial euro lines will ever address this by creating a welded micro loop from the start? Are there any FIPS regulations that would prohibit certain connection types in a competition setting?
@tacticalflyfisher3817

Rio already has a welded loop on their euro lines. It sucks. It’s way too thick to slide through guides. I’ve talked to other manufacturers who say they can’t make one small enough without it falling apart. There’s no fips rule against loops on the end of a fly line.

Cool idea... however, why can't you dip your exposed core loop in a wax or waterproofing solution... even dip it in crazy glue and let it soak into the fibers or UV glue to form a hard loop... or even put a tippet ring in it and then seal it up leaving the tippet ring open... even a simpler solution would be to dip it in WD40 which is a water repellent, or even just something like a cooking oil... there are so many options... and if you think about it... water getting into the braid should effect it anyway... even if you tie a knot in the end of your line, that knot is not going to be so tight as to cinch down on the braid to prevent water from wicking up it anyway... if anyone thinks I'm wrong, let me know...

The micro loop never touches the water since this is only for euro nymphing and the use of micro leaders. I don’t need it to be water repellent. I’ve tried the tippet ring and it’s not as smooth. If I’m connecting other leaders I use the superglue splice 2.0 that I previously did a video on.

Why not just do a needle nail knot?

I can replace the micro leader on the water easier this way. When using a micro leader, the end of the fly line can fray with a needle nail knot since the needle widens the line more than the diameter of the micro leader. The fray catches in the guides more than the micro loop.

Why don’t you recommend this for non European methods?

Once the micro loop is made, the core is exposed and water can seep into the tip of the fly line easily. This will cause it to sink and make other methods where you want your fly line to float less effective. When Euro nymphing, your fly line won't be touching the water so it's not an issue.

It is unbelievable how much stuff you have hanging off your body. I will venture miles into the woods with enough gear to fish a variety of systems along with food. A single pack. And, from the looks of it, 1/4 to 1/3 of the gear. Seems very overkill. If it were on a different channel I would think this was a video to poke fun at fly fishers.

To each their own. I carry a lot of boxes with me plus camera gear so. I also have an old shoulder injury which makes it impossible to put weight on my left shoulder. So I split the weight between two packs. It works for me but obviously wouldn't for everyone.

Your zoom is too close we miss half the video

It would be nice to actually see what you’re doing with the knot. That closeup was pointless
