I'm working on a cover for a fantasy prequel we're publishing soon and made a timelapse video (I added some dramatic music, hope it isn't annoying - I'm thinking of doing more of these and maybe even some book basic book trailers. Let me know what you think!)
PS. The fun stuff starts at 3:12 (lighting, highlights, etc)
Hey there - I'm Derek Murphy. I'm a fine artist who became a book cover designer, then started writing young adult scifi and fantasy. I've spent almost 20 years living abroad, have a PhD in comparative literature (revolutionary politics in Paradise Lost), and have been featured in CNN for renting castles to use as writing retreats. Although I'm not working with clients anymore, I've built a ton of resources to help indie authors write, design and publish bestselling books.
On this channel, I talk about writing, publishing and creating personal freedom with unconventional business strategies and providing value. My videos are unpolished and a little raw, because we travel full-time and I focus on content, not production quality.

I love the way you tied it all together with the colours. I know how to cut things out and use layers, but I need a lot more study on masks and filters. I've been trying to design my initial covers on Canva just so I can start putting up my back catalog, but I can see I'm going to have to PS them at some point.

Beautiful cover! I'm always curious where does one get pics from to use in making book covers?

I really enjoy watching these time lapses! I'm curious to know how much real time was put into this cover, maybe post it in the description next time? Beautiful cover!

Good point, probably a few hours the first time (playing with all the pictures, deciding on the layout/model), then a few more hours rebuilding it with full res images and doing it cleaner. Maybe 7 hours total?

Have you upgraded to Photoshop 2020? There's a new object selection tool that's been a godsend for me when I cut models. Otherwise, beautiful cover.

Also nice video. It is amazing the amount of work that goes into a book cover and the difference between having a professional make a cover vs an amateur.
