It's amazing. I just watched Storm chasers, but I always come back to this doc for some reason. I love it so much. I find it has all the authenticity that most work doesn't have, even when the intention is pure, most work just doesn't really get there, but this does. Of course the filmmaking here is top notch, I mean, it's Mark Bone, so that's a given, but there are so many gifted filmmakers/cinematographers around and I just think it's always special to find work that makes you forget the gear, the process, and tools, and just sits you down to watch, and listen, and feel. And learn. That's great work, whether it's a documentary or narrative magic, it's all about the imagination and what is evoked in us as an audience. And especially if you are an artist who creates work yourself, to be taken away is absolutely a gift. And so, yeah, I'm still coming back to this gift right here, and it just keeps on giving. (corny. lol, but true) Thanks for the inspiration, and for documenting a moment that none of us, anywhere in this country, should ever forget. Never. Here's a great example of taking something despicable and turning it into a beautiful bed of wildflowers. Awesome. Again. (of course I watched Battleground again before making this comment)

I watched the film yesterday. I really appreciate it. It hits close to home as someone who grew up in Scarborough and currently lives in Pickering just outside the GTA. I appreciated the variety of perspectives and the room you gave them to speak their minds. And then all the tips in this video! The balance between having patience, not rushing the process and setting real deadlines was what stuck out for me. 👍

Beautiful BTS Mark. I will take a look at Battleground now. Thank you for maintaining this channel. EDIT: Mark, I just started watching the film. I'm 3 and a half minutes in and I'm already feeling the tears. Damn. You and Kwesi did an amazing job. EDIT #2: I'm done watching the film. I immediately had to share it with a few friends... friends who aren't even in the industry. It was masterfully done. I now understand why you spent extra on sound and coloring. The sound on this is beautiful... both the audio from the interviewees as well as the backing tracks. The cinematography fits so nicely with the narrative. And the coloring ties it all together... the tones are similar throughout. I can tell that 'time of day' was important when shooting, to keep a sense of cohesiveness for outdoor shots. I can't help but want to shoot docs now that I've seen your work. To sum it up: your film MOVED ME. Thank you for sharing.

I discovered you about a year ago and have hung on your every word since. I've absorbed so many of the amazing tutorials, tips and advice on your channel but Battleground serves as the fullest lesson in film making that I have yet seen. STUNNING is an understatement for both the content and cinematography. As a black man, I can often tell when a white person is comfortable with and around black people and I detected that in you almost straight away with our presence in many of your videos, not necessarily doing anything stereotypically black (no rapping, no dancing, etc). Never mind the beauty, Battleground is such a dignified, articulate and powerful look into the feelings that I have daily, that somehow go misunderstood and/or dismissed by others. The topic of this film will always be a topic unless more white people like yourselves take time out of their lives to see and understand how others exist. Mark Bone you have my ultimate respect. I really have to thank people like yourself, Kwesi and the others in the film who have given me the space and grace to inquire and speak to you about your journey's. I know there is a lot of talk about "allyship" when it comes to white peoples position on race, but I think it being an ally needs to be seen as a two way street. People like yourself are creating are conversing and engaging in a way that allows white folks like me understand your experiences and feelings without feeling like they're going to get cancelled or disparaged. So thank you Wayne, and every person from the black community who has given me the time of day to speak about this topic. I feel like the more I learn the more I realize I don't know, but the more I want you to know that I care!

In my experience can produce a personal project without insurance usually (but I don’t like giving legal advice so these are not instructions but observations) for this film I ran it under my production company and we have liability insurance so technically it would be under that

The timing of everything happening, the film needed to be released. We have already submitted to 12+ festivals but we felt it was more important to get it out to an audience without the hurdles of festivals

I watched a Quentin Tarantino documentary about how he made so many films being broke as fuck with no money/ budget, and I thought that was cool because as an audience member who doesn’t think about the costs of movie making, it never occurred to me that it needed to be expensive. So I looked up how to make a film with 0 dollars and clicked this video, I’m commenting because this is cool and the algorithm needs to know that this should be shared :D

bro Films are expensive. you need a camera a lens, a memory card, and a bag to hold all that a laptop to edit a premiere pro subscription an internet to download music, and time and energy you might not have because you're too busy working on securing lunch for you or your family. zero dollars films do not exist. this career is one of the most expensive if not the most expensive and what matter you say it will still be.
