Making a floater frame without power tools! Is it even worth it to own a power miter saw or nail guns?
No music, just workshop sounds, no narration...but subtitles available with CC.

Wow. Love the Japanese saws, the classic planes, the jigs that I guess you've built. Beautiful job.

Loved this beautiful vedeo without the load of music and unnecessary talk. It enables one to understand the process better. Please do more of this type.

Beautiful job, James. I've only just started building my own floater frames and loved watching your process. Love your tools, too (and the Vespa? haha Couldn't completely tell from the glimpse). Thanks for sharing in such detail.

Thank you! Glad if my vid was helpful to you. The 🛵 Vespa is my wife’s bike, a LX150. She lets me ride it sometimes.

Nice! 👍 Mine is an old BMW, unfortunately sidelined for brake issues. Sometime I’ll get to back to it

True craftsman , but I very much doubt one person has watched this video and made one this way

Would like to know the size specs. How thick and broad are the strips.

This is brilliant James, have you ever thought about a second hand morso guillotine,it could save you lots of time, although that might not be your intentions.Super art and framing btw.

Thanks for the compliments! In actual practice, I cut miters on a nice Bosch chop saw, and buy bare wood molding from a planing mill. This video was really just a demo that a floater frame CAN be made with hand tools, if needs be. But it really does require more time this way, and is not very efficient! It’s just a bit of retro fun for me.

@@JamesCrandallPainting No problem James,I actually have watched a video of you using the chop saw(my memory isn't what it used to be).The morso has pros and cons, but gives very accurate and smooth mitres.I'm not trying to 'teach my Granny how to suck eggs',hopefully it didn't come accross like that. All the best.

Not at all 🙂 In the perfect world, I suppose I would have a guillotine as well... no room for such a specialist machine in the current shop, unfortunately ... but there is a freedom in limited options too

Hi Mr. James. I have just joined the channel, I am also a framer and a painter.I have all the tools, computerized machine for the passepartout, bit, stapler etc. I would like to make some different frames for my paintings, not the usual ones, I have no router to do the I really like that old plane you use in the video. How to Make a Floater Frame with HAND TOOLS. I don't know what it's called, can you kindly tell me if there is something equivalent on amazon? Thank you in advance. Greetings from the small island of Capri, Italy.

Hello Alessandro, thank you for joining. That is an old Stanley No. 45 plane, a combination plane which can do a variety of things, but is rather complicated. There is an even more complex type, a Stanley No. 55. They stopped making these in the 1960s, it they can still be found on ebay. For just making a rabbet / rebate, I think that getting a Stanley No. 78 duplex rabbet plane would probably be easier. I don’t own one, but they are still made today and can be bought new.
