How to Make a Floating Island of Plants - Zero Cost

To improve water quality in an Organic Pool, Natural Swimming Pool, or pond, often the key solution is adding more plants to help mop up more nutrients from the water. With floating islands of plants it is easy to quickly add more plants for filtration and in addition, provide some beneficial shade to the water. Here, I show how I made a floating island for zero cost using a used car tyre and some plastic milk bottles.

Fascinating idea :-) ...reminds me of the chap in México who built himself a floating mangrove island, using bottles (1000's of bottles) as flotation.

Nice but.... I think a bicycle tire with water bottles would work the same but easier to manage.

I tend to use Hailea V60 air compressors (and I'm not sponsored by them) - but there lots of other good makes too.

I did a similar floating garden and found that the only bottles that didn't loose air over time were the soft drink/soda/pop bottles (or anything fizzy/carbonated). It kind of made sense as they are the only type that are designed to be under pressure. I'd be interested to know if yours is remaining buoyant? Thanks.

I'm thinking about doing 1 myself. Do you think it's practical to replace the bottles once in a while? Or is it better to find suitable bottles (soft drink ones as you mentioned) right from the start?

You could replace bottles overtime on a smaller scale system. But on a bigger system, having to swim/reach too far underneath the structure could be dangerous. I'd stick with bottles designed for pressure from the outset, if I were doing it again. I hope this helps.

Oh I had such a laugh...! I should have rehearsed this... and lets see if it floats. I did the same thing with tyres en what do you know, it sank to the damn bottem. Also those milkbottles became so brittle within a week or month. I rather suggest empty 2li cold drink bottles. They last!

@@organicpools-davidpaganbutler floating islands used when you've run out of space or want more plants, but with current etc, I would float them but anchor them where I would want them, or if in the way and with a little movement
