Hi Charlie. Great instructions and guidance as always. It’s an idea just to knock off the sharp edge on the batten fixed to whatever you are hanging. This allows for a small amount of debris that may have gathered in the wall batten and would otherwise prevent the cut surfaces mating snugly. Not so much a consideration in the bedroom but very relevant for workshop applications where sawdust and the like may settle on the wall mounted batten.

Thanks for reminding us about this and the way to do it. One of the first things I ever made was a wall mounted tool storage cupboard based on a Conran design which used split battens as mounts. Cannot remember how I actually made the split batten as it was about 30+ years ago and it is still in use. Has been adapted as I have new or replaced tools. Despite holding my router, sanders, drill, etc and the cupboard itself the mount has remained solid and strong so can vouch for the strength. It is a versatile mount that is strong, practical and easy to use.

Lovely down to earth explanations as ever - thanks! One question - I've noticed on several YT channels increasingly complicated approaches to calculating how to cut the batten EXACTLY in half with a 45 degree cut (BTW yours was refreshingly simple :) ) However, I can't help but think that there is In fact no logical reason that the battens NEED to be the same width. Or even close. You could just as effectively cut a 10cm board into eg 4cm and 6cm and they would function just as well. Or am I missing something ...?

I had never heard of this before but what a useful fixing technique! I learn so much from your videos. Please do not feel at all rushed, but I'll be honest - I'm holding off on booking our home EV charger install until I see your video on the subject! There's so little reliable info online on EV chargers and the considerations for installing them (just lots of paid-for reviews instead). I'll get the guy booked as otherwise I'm going to miss the grant deadline, but can't wait to hear your well researched views. As I say, don't feel at all rushed on getting a video out before it's ready, you're just in demand because of the trust I have in you and your years of reliable advice. Gr8 vid Charlie, I'd have thought you'd have used your track saw for this. You're far braver than me using a circular jobbie. This isn't a criticism, as we all know all too well there is no right or wrong way (withing the confines of sensibility and safety) of doing things nor is there a wrong tool just one you feel comfortable with. Keep those no nonsense vids coming,all aimed at ordinary guys with modest resources unlike our cousins the other side of the pond. 👍👍👍👍😎

Thanks Alec, I really appreciate that. Yes a couple of people have said that. With a piece of wood this width, I just find the fence easier than a track as with the track there would be a slight worry that the wood might move, but you're probably right 😉👍

I have tried a type of sticky double sided cellotape but that too doesnt work. What can he use please? Everything just falls off the wall. Thank you
@kristoffscuba5466
@kristoffscuba5466 2 года назад
As you cut your batten down the middle, you ended up with two pieces of unequal width. That might not matter, but if you wanted them the exact same width you can measure the distance from the edge of your batten to the middle, and the subtract half the batten thickness from that measurement. Mark that line rather than the middle, cut on a 45, and both your pieces will be the same width.
@CharlieDIYte
@CharlieDIYte 2 года назад
Watch it again. The 45 degree cut bisects the centre of the plank, not the middle on the surface, so each piece is equal.

I went crazy with french cleats in my garden work room back in June this year - and i mean crazy. Pretty much every tool and material I have is now set up as a french cleat! Circular sawing was the worst part of the project - none of my cleats are perfectly straight and most of them to be fair ended up looking like waney-edge boards! The best fun though was devising the holder for each tool so that i could hang them on the wall cleats. I had to get quite innovative with some of them such as the circular saw and the orbital sander. Wish there was a way to post photos in these comments...

Felt pretty stupid almost giving up and thinking I needed a circular saw for this before I realised I could get an identical fence for my Makita Jigsaw. Probably not as good as a circular saw for straight cutting but hopefully good enough.
@CharlieDIYte
@CharlieDIYte 2 года назад
Yes Ross definitely worth trying - I've never thought of putting a fence on a jigsaw although I've often used one up against a straight edge. You might find it wanders a little particularly given the angle, but it shouldn't matter as you're mating the two pieces together.

That workshop has laughed in the face of every storm that's been thrown at it. There's the odd pin prick hole in the roof - probably from sparks or perhaps birds but it's staggering how well it's weathered. Only problem is, rather like the London Eye that only had planning permission for about 6 months, the wife keeps reminding me it's only meant to be temporary. She doesn't want it there forever but I've told her the outdoor seating will need to be built in it in the spring 😬😉

This might seem like a stupid question but I'm fitting out my workshop with a base set of tools in preparation for starting to learn about woodworking and tackling some basic projects - do I need a plunge/tracksaw AND a standard circular saw ? Or will the plunge do the lot ?.
@CharlieDIYte
@CharlieDIYte 2 года назад
That Lester is a very good question. Bottom line, if you plan to rip down a lot of sheets of say MDF, then the plunge saw is what you want because a) it can slide down an aluminium track and b) the dust extraction is much more efficient. However the circular saw is much lighter and more versatile for quick cross cuts, or more minor work closer to the edge of the piece of wood where you can rely on the fence. Have a look at this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jhG4fX_Vjmc.html at 7:42 where I talk about the mdf dust issue (you should build yourself a cyclone for your new workshop) and also this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lXs-4iXO874.html where I show you the plunge saw I bought to replace the circular saw I had been using. For cyclones, check out this video, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9RfHpm2vf40.html and this one ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Ws7Tp2Qgbo4.html where I fit the pressure release valve.
@thenomad9853
@thenomad9853 2 года назад
@@CharlieDIYte that's brilliant info thanks very much for the reply. I have been considering dust removal systems - and have bookmarked various homebrew offerings, I'll take a look at the solutions you've linked. I'm trying to build out a solid base of essential tools at the moment, without going ham initially (I've looked at table saws, thicknessers/planers etc but i think not getting over excited is the order of the day until I've 1) gotten a workshop set up and know my available space etc 2) taken some courses in woodworking to kick start the projects I have in mind - so I can gauge not only what my ability is but where I'm headed with it), but it does sound like there's a case for both a plunge and a circular saw - and I've seen you use both to good effect in your vlogs to date. I will look to pick up a circular saw and add this I think, I'm at a point where I have enough batteries etc built up so I can pick up a body only version. Please keep up the great content - for someone starting out their woodworking journey your style of informative and well structured presentation really hits the mark for me - I've bookmarked several of your vids in my "things I'd like to build" playlist as potential project inspirations :). Many thanks again, appreciated.

Very nice job as usual! But, the most complex part was kinda glossed-over…how did you recess the headboard to accommodate the cleat?
@CharlieDIYte
@CharlieDIYte 2 года назад
I didn't show that because I thought making a headboard was a bit niche/ not central to the purpose of the video, but basically I made the headboard from a piece of 18mm MDF and then glued 18mm strips to the back to create the recess. Maybe I should do a video on it.

Good video. I only would screw the wood to the table and don't use the clamps since the drill holes are out of sight and it is more solid to work. That system can also be used to hang cupboards and the like. But my first thoughts were, why would you mount it to the wall but I saw later that the headboard did not reach to the ground. Mine does cause it also holds the lower part of my bed bottom (3 layer boxspring) that's why it made me wonder. More interesting, did you do the upholstery yourself cause if you do, please do a video on that, with all the curves and whatnot. Anyways, solid job done again, 10 out of 10 !!

I don't know why I didn't talk about how I made the headboard. @olddailly you're right, I talked about it very briefly at the end of this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UPHk6A14EWo.html For both headboards I made the sub structure, and then got an upholsterer I know to cover it, but once you've got the foam and if you have a stapler, it's actually quite straightforward. I'll do a quick video showing how I made this one if I have time.

I have never used a French cleat solution, but there is a question in the back of my mind: what are some easy solutions to ensure that a unit hung on a wall isn’t accidentally knocked off? Maybe this headboard is too heavy to knock off, but there are other situations where this can be a concern (admittedly, for a beginner who has not tested French cleats yet). Thanks!

Understand your concern but I have used french cleats for over twenty years and never have had one knocked off yet as you need to lift the item up more than 30mm so even if you knock against the item it will never come off I hope you understand what I mean

Exactly David, and you could put a small screw in the wall above for peace of mind, if you felt the need but as you say, a combination of gravity and the distance it has to travel would render this unnecessary. Thanks for answering this. 👊

@@CharlieDIYte I thank you both for answering my question. I’ll go ahead and install a temporary tool rack in my temporary shop and give French cleats a try. Thank you! :)

It's an 18v that Trend sent me to try out. Very impressed with it but not sure it merits a video in its own right unless you think it would be useful (I struggle with review videos - preferring to show the tools in the context of a job). 👍

Great job but i don't see how the head board can be flush with the wall with a board attached to the back of it? Sorry but am i missing something here? lol
@CharlieDIYte
@CharlieDIYte Год назад
It's a good point. You build a recess into the back of the headboard with say a strip off 18mm MDF or pine if you're wanting to staple into it. If the headboard is already made you can use flush mount brackets like this www.toolstation.com/flushmount-fitting/p60564

Nice one Charlie - but you could have cut those with your tracksaw.🤔
@dexslazenger6938

Thought the same Norman but not everyone has a track-saw, but there will be quite a few geezers and geezerettes that will have a circular saw. Even if you have a track saw, cutting a small width like that isn't going to be any easier, straighter but not necessarily easier.
@normanboyes4983
@normanboyes4983 2 года назад
@@dexslazenger6938 That’s true. However if you more than one length of wood of the same thickness, it is pretty easy to keep the track stable. It’s how I do it.😉(No table saw).
@CharlieDIYte
@CharlieDIYte 2 года назад
That's a very good point Norman, although weirdly, I do find for jobs like this using the fence is incredibly effective and avoids the faff of having to get the tracks out. It's very interesting though the blurred lines between circular saws and plunge saws. I'm planning a video on this.
@nialstewart8263

@@CharlieDIYte it might also have been difficult to clamp the wood securely under the track, you'd only have had a couple of inches to rest it on.
