Your tutorials are fabulous. I have learned so many tricks that are not listed in any books and magazine patterns. This gemstone tutorial just solved a problem I am having with Magatama beads which ended in a mess! The other tutorials didn’t explain that the bead has to nestle underneath the thread you are crossing. Their hands were in the way, so I couldn’t tell exactly where it should go. I appreciate that you go slow and show exactly what is happening, and when. Cannot wait to try my bracelet again and also want to try a gemstone one. Thank you so much, and I look forward to watching more tutorials from you.

I've been wondering what to do with all of the polished gemstone chips I have purchased instead of just crocheted styles and I do enjoy Kumihimo projects. I also have some very tiny but very gorgeous high quality 2mm Baby Freshwater Rice Pearls that I think would work well instead of the galvanised seed beads. Very much enjoyed this video. This is a new technique for me, but I am anxious to tackle it! I already have a design in my mind using a portion of a necklace with this braided chips, but would like to finish the necklace with a single strand of beads. Might you have any suggestions on how to connect a single strand of beads with a smooth transition between the two mediums. I would like to hide where the 2 types connect and get that clean look. Thank you so much for your instructional and inspirational videos. I appreciate all your efforts to offer instructions to beginners! I was very curious about the necklace you are wearing in the video. I know you touched on the subject at the end, but I am unsure how to go about making a necklace with the bigger chips in the middle, like the one yellow you are wearing. Is it possible for you to add a video with more instruction on this technique? I bought a round disk on an impulse whilst at a beading show 3 or 4 years ago, but have never used it. I located it at the bottom of my craft drawer while looking for inspiration for making a beaded necklace for a friend. I had not realised you could bead with it!

@purplepaisleypassion
@purplepaisleypassion 5 лет назад
Pru, thank you so much for making this video. I've always loved gemstone chips, especially because they are so affordable! But other than stringing them, it's difficult to know what to do with them. I still havent mastered the kumi with beads technique, but this inspires me to try again. I missed it in the video.... was this SLon you're using? And one other question... it seems to me that you didnt tuck your silver beads under the thread as you normally would. Was there a reason for this? Or am I mistaken? Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed this video (as I do all of your vids). Thank you SO MUCH for making yourself available for so much valuable outreach and instruction!!! Much love!
@Prumihimo
@Prumihimo 5 лет назад
purplepaisleypassion - Chips are fabulous for kumihimo! The cord I use is S-lon 0.5mm/Tex 210. The silver beads are tucked under in just the same way as the chips. It is harder to see in the video because they are so much smaller. I hope you will have success with this technique.
@TheRealGypsyJane
@TheRealGypsyJane 7 лет назад
Thanks! Love your videos. What kind of cord was that? I heard "Eslon" but that didn't google me anything. And, what are its characteristics so I can find a USA replacement if it's not available here?
@Prumihimo
@Prumihimo 7 лет назад
The cord is S-Lon or C-Lon. They are both the same and they are easily available in the US. There are several different widths available, so make sure you get the beading cord 0.5mm/Tex 210/#18. It could be described in any of those ways!

Hi Pru, wonderful clear instructions. Makes me want to get on a project straight away. Only observation, you were turning anti-clockwise until 10:14 and went clockwise. Does this make a difference to the braid at all? 🤔🦋
@Prumihimo
@Prumihimo 7 лет назад
Well spotted Hazel! Great question. It makes no difference at all when you are braiding with 8 cords, in spite of what you may read elsewhere! Even when you use complicated counted bead patterns you do not need to worry about which way you turn and you can change direction. When I braid I turn to and fro for speed and I know that several other designers do this as well. It means that you do not need to change your grip on the disk. In my beginners videos I recommend turning in the same direction because I think it helps people to get into the rhythm of braiding, but once you can braid confidently you can try the to and fro method. However, when you move on to more cords you do need to keep turning in the same direction, preferably anti-clockwise.

Hello Pru....a fellow Brit here. Love your videos. I find them very easy to follow. I have a vast collection of various sizes of Baltic Amber and would like to make a necklace/bracelet set using Kumihimo braiding. Would you recommend wire stringing the Amber as a centre section focal point and then attaching Kumihimo braid either side, or would it be better to incorporate the Amber pieces into the braid? The drilled holes are very tiny, so I wonder if using Fireline beading thread would work in the focal section. Your thoughts please. Thank you so much.....Susan.
@Prumihimo
@Prumihimo 7 лет назад
Hi Susan. I think it depends on the size and shape of the amber, but I think my preference would be to make them the focal, as in my video called Big Bead Kumihimo Necklace. However, if they are quite small chips they can be added into the braid as you work and you could have amber on 6 cords and gold beads on 2 diagonally opposite cords. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bp8QFT1Kmlg.html

I’ve been doing a lots og leatherwrap bracelets, but got so tired of all the stiching, leather knots and other acrobatic needlework to make mine stand out. Seeing this, lm totally sold. I love it. Have a lot of chips from earlier projects and Cant wait to try this out (just waiting for the discs l ordered to arrive) If l got you right, same proceedure for the necklace, just have larger chips in the middle ? How do you measure your strands with chips ? Lets say you devide it into 3 sections; first 1/3 small chips, 2’nd 1/3 slightly larger and 3’rd 1/3 back to smaller. Any suggestion How long each section should be, How many beads ? Like in the bracelet, you started out with a certain amount. Understand you cant give a precise number, but just to give me a little clue as a total newbe. Greetings from Norway 🙌🏻

Irene Case I can’t give advice about polishing, but you could try mixing them with 4 opposite cords of slightly larger round beads. This will mean that the rough stones do not touch the skin.

@Prumihimo

Toni Wilkerson - If you are using 8 cords, as in this video, it does not matter which way you turn the disk. With more cords it will make a difference and I recommend turning your disk anti-clockwise. You might find this video interesting, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KQsyHDwqzXQ.html

A close up of the different bracelets at the start would have been helpful.

Good point! This was one of my earlier videos and I have listened to similar comments, so my more recent videos contain more close-ups. You will also find that I provide a page of information and photos for each video on my website. prumihimo.com/youtube-videos/video-make-gemstone-chip-bracelet/

Great video and pretty product, but I haven't tried kumihimo yet. Where should I start? Thanks!

Sorry not to answer sooner, somehow I missed this question. The best place to start is with plain braids, as in this video, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7jON7dfAqOQ.html and then try beads as in this video, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jlQ88UOIbQo.html
