How to make a generator quieter | Best Generator Quiet Box enclosure

⚙ 🛠 I recently got a Briggs and Stratton generator. But how do you reduce generator sound? I show you how to build a generator shelter, or lightweight generator quiet box for our whole house generator. this generator enclosure was motivated to provide a generator shelter to quiet the noise to make this a more quiet running generator. I show you how to make a generator more quiet using this enclosure made from OSB and Rock Wool noise insulation. I got the Rock wool on amazon. The key to keeping your generator quiet is a generator baffle box which I show you how to make.

I always wanted a whole-house generator but the bigger they get the more noise they make. So I found a compromise to keep things like electric pellet smokers and Christmas Tree lights on if the power goes out! UPDATE: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CyyF9vCYcOI.html

Interesting! I've been eyeballing a small plastic storage shed and insulating it and debating whether just build a DIY wooden one and saving some bucks!! I think if a go the DIY route I might go a little wider and give it a plywood wood floor to make it a bit sturdier where I can add some hinges and have a flip up top and two open up doors on the front side!! Thanks man, you got me thinking now!! Getting tired of dragging my generator out of the barn to the front of the house every-time something goes nuts and we lose power around here!! I need a little small shed I can store in in on the porch near the electric panel that wont look too out of place and ugly!

Great video. A little advise. Make sure you exhaust goes straight out without any of it coming back in. These designs will only work if the vent and the fan is the only air moving through the box. The exhaust heat will burn out you fan motor and sooner or later cause a fire to the box itself. Think about it. If the exhaust heat didn't matter you could just let it vent inside the box and vent oit through the vent fan right? Lastly, get a straight pipe for the exhaust to go straight out. Keep the shield to protect the wood but straight galvanize or black pipe with a pipe flange will work.

@@GreenhornBBQbeer Actually all I did to the exhaust was make an extended exhaust pipe and attached it to the existing muffler. With Texas and Oregon getting ice hammered and major power outages..I pulled my Generator out of shed. I like your setup on a silencer box but would not leave the exhaust pointed up where rain and snow if any might flood the inside as water and electricity are not a good match for standing in or near eachother..especially at refuel and restart times. I'm going to think about using my shed and modifying it because of noise and neighbors..and thieves. Great video bro.

Thanks, yes that is a good idea with the hinges, I would use stainless I suppose. Maybe a future mod...
@howlinghusky7823
@howlinghusky7823 3 года назад
Definitely stainless if you want it standing outdoors. I would go for big hinges which have pins that you can just pull out. That makes for an easy assembly. Have you considered rerouting the exhaust with a couple of U-shape bends? I’m asking as I think a large portion of the sound comes from the exhaust and I would imagine that a good couple of bends might have sound bounce around inside it? I would even try that with PVC plumbing pipes just as a easy test before I do metal. I still have to build a box for mine and that’s what I thought of trying as a test. I’m even considering keeping the exhaust inside the box and add one decent extractor fan to pull out the fumes and one push fan directed straight at the air intake which pushes clean air from outside.

@@dannydeutsch279 Hi Danny. I actually haven’t yet. I have so much work to do at the moment. Busy building a massive Rosewood and Olivewood pivot entrance door, 2.3m X 1.3m. After that a big built in braai (BBQ) and then a whole new kitchen. So I have a whole truckload of wood to order and then I’ll add sheets of plywood to the order for the generator’s silencer box. As for the silencer part, I thought of it this morning. As a test I would use the PVC and let it loop in S curves like a long curled up ‘snake’. If it works, I would then do it out of metal and after it’s done, encase the whole S-curves in a extra wood box that I would fill up with Polyurethane foam spray so it would expand all around the pipes. That would also reduce both the heat and the sound. I will come comment here when I’ve built it and maybe also make a video of the build. I guess it won’t be soon though. I first have to get through that list of work.

the engine of this thing IS force air cooled, i think i would juist get a duct onto the starter (which houses the intake for the fan) these things barely let the engine run warm enough without any baffle box around it. (i would only need it on colder, cloudy days bc in sunny weather like in your vid, i could run everything off my solar panels.

Keeps the sound away from the house and I could have it pipe out in the really high grass to deaden even further. At that distance underground, the exhaust gasses won’t be too hot either

Personally if you’re going to build a box like that and make a investment I would’ve gotten a little lawnmower trailer that would accommodate the size so that way the box is already built on something that could be moved and have like a ramp where you could take the generator in and out when you need to… I would figure they would probably be a another option to probably quiet down the sound even more probably with different material would probably increase the quietness and lower the decibels even more than what you have there…. Also the exhaust I think they have something that would also prevent certain fumes you can also use a quite external muffler auto e from a car maybe chicken two different car mufflers that take something like a hot rod turns into a sleeper mufffler

I like everything you did except when you showed that you have the exhaust pointing in toward the palms. I'm not talking about the damage that the heat and fumes can cause to the foliage of that planting area, but it is pretty thick, and you have a canvas(?) covering attached to the roof right near it. I'm concerned about Carbon Monoxide buildup right there, and possibly entering your house through soffit vents, cracks around doors and windows. My opinion is that the generator should be farther away from the house with the exhaust aimed away from the house.

just wondering if you even need an exhaust outlet if you have that fan exhausting 100% of the time the generator is running anyways.

I would imagine you could lose one or two decibels if you replaced your insulation with egg crate foam used in sound deadening applications. One decibel reduction is huge

If you want maximum quiet. Dig a hole and put a doghouse on top of it. Install the vents and fan on the doghouse.
