In this new series titled Sustainable Home, we will take you through a series of videos on how to build a sustainable home. At Aanandaa, we are building an innovative and creative home, which is as sustainable as possible. We have explored several construction technologies and design, to ensure we have the most natural, resilient and energy efficient home.
In this episode, Manisha takes you through how to build a glass bottle wall, and how you can use a waste material like empty beer bottles to make an interesting and attractive feature wall.
The process of making a bottle brick is simple. Simply cut the top of the bottle to a specific length which will be half of the thickness of the wall. Remember two bottles stuck together end to end make one brick. So if each bottle is cut to 4.5 inches in height, then together they will make a 9 inch brick.
An industrail way of making glass bricks it to install a glass cutting blade on your work bench with a measure to hold it in place. Then you can cut the bottles into two pieces very quickly.
Simple dunk them into a bucket of water to clean out any major dirt, and stick them together with the help of duct tape. Once the brick is ready, it is used to make a wall, just like a brick. You can use cement mortar or lime mortar or even mud to make these walls.
The glass brick walls make an interesting and playful feature for partition walls, bathroom walls or landscape walls. The play of light both in the day and night is quite pleasing.
Sustainable architecture at Aanandaa is directed by Ar. Jitesh Malik from Studio Aureole. The integral design practice at their studio combines a commitment to environmental sensitivity with a contemporary design language and a pedagogical process. At Aanandaa, Jitesh creatively contextualised a diverse range of sustainable practices to collaboratively work towards an aesthetically enriching experience.

I've seen those glass bottle walls on earthship structures by mike Reynolds. They look amazing and all earthship structures are made mostly from recycled materials like tyres, glass bottles, soda cans. They also have a you tube channel called earthship biotecture. I really liked the concept of earthship where you can harvest rain water, produce your own electricity and you can also grow your own food inside the house and not only that they also have their own waste management systems.

Earthship structures are fantastic too! But they are well suited for temperate zones, not for our subtropics, where we have very hot summers. But yes, they are amazing structures, and we took a lot of inspiration from them.

@@farmaanandaa why not? He built one in the desert

Pls check again. It's probably High Desert, which is colder climate. You can't survive in an earthship when your temperatures range from 5 to 45 degrees Celsius like ours do.

I watched videos on building earthships and seen them build walls with cans that they complete covered also because they would take less mortar. Thank you for sharing the how to about the cutting the bottles.

Was it used with cement based material or mud? Better if you show wall from both the sides. How does it match the width of the wall if bottles are of different sizes?
@farmaanandaa
@farmaanandaa Год назад
This is made with cement mortar. You cut the bottle to half the width of the wall. So when you stick 2 bottles end to end, you get the size of the wall. If you see the beginning and end of the video, you can see the wall from both sides

Nice content, thanks Manisha. Could've soaks the string as opposed to pouring it over the thread. Please share a tour of the entire new house!

Thank you for this; I am glad to hae found your channel! Do you have any comments or thoughts on this idea? I have been planning to build a wall of bottles, but rather than building those double-ended bricks, I would like to leave one side open-ended, and in the open hole I would place lengths of bamboo and straw, creating a habitat for pollinating native bees. This is for a wall where both sides are outside.
@farmaanandaa
@farmaanandaa Год назад
Hello Melissa, your idea sounds interesting and I think it can be done. It will be like a bee hotel - I have seen such designs without the glass bottles, but you can probably make one with the bottles. Good luck!

To make it easier and faster and have less run off of alcohol dip the string in alcohol before you tie it around the bottle.

@farmaanandaa

Ours is 9 inches. Since two bottles have to be cut and joined together, think that's the minimum width you should go with

Did you use rubbing alcohol? I tried burning a string that I poured 70% rubbing alcohol tied around a thick glass vinegar bottle. It didn't work. I'm not sure why. It seemed like either the string was non-flammable or the alcohol wasn't the percentage it claimed to be, or the glass was too thick. Any thoughts? I'm going to try a different string I have on hand, before I go out and buy a different alcohol. Feedback appreciated from those whom did have success using this method. Thanks.

@@farmaanandaa : isn’t that a lot of cement? Also I see you have laid in the shower area… is that maintainable in the long run? Most sustainable houses have only the wet area like kitchen and bath area with tiles to avoid leaks and to make cleaning easy. Is the wall completely laid with bottles or the lower area is tiled to avoid leaks ?
