This guy is all like: how to build an ork army. Cut these little figures out to get them out of the way of the sprues which is what you need, cut up parts of the box and shave these sprues and we can melt this down to cast into bases
While I'm not too big on the paint job, being able to make something this good out of materials that would have just been destined for the scrap heap is absolutely fantastic! I think I may have to get recycling too!
Yellow is one of the more difficult colors to get right. Both because it tends to not cover up very well and also because the tone of the yellow is usually extremely difficult to look realistic. I paint my orks primarily badmoonz, but i dont do overly beaten up rust effects because i spend so much time making the yellow look good.
How'd you manage a good yellow? I usually do a dark orange base then a couple thin yellow coats (all in acrylic) but I'm wondering if there's an easier way
If you don’t want to paint the next build, maybe get in touch with Squidmar Miniatures. He does a lot of collabs and is a great painter. He always likes a challenge.
I've seen people build minis out of sprues before, sprue-crons were kinda popular, but this is just... inspiring. You litterly just took a bunch of old plastic and turned it into something that's (probably) tournament legal. The great unclean one made sense, because it was a blob like monster, but this, this is on a so much higher level, respect man.
Great work dude! The other thing to remember is that painting anything it always goes through an ‘ugly stage’ I find and I usually hate the paint jobs I do on models at one point or another. The thing to do is push through and you’ll get there. I think your finished model looks good but if you wanted to do some weathering you could use a spounge to lightly add some brown chips and id also recommend playing with some weathering pigments.
Don't give up on ur painting, I have problems with mine, but I got told to do more builds and painting the more you do, the better you get. I have been in the game since the late '80s, and I'm always learning a short cut or a better way to paint, as I have started to use an airbrush which has put the fun back into painting my Super heavies, I model Imperial Guard Catachan Army, hundreds of vehicles and air units, now I'm in my late 50's, so please give it go cheers from DownUnder.
Final paint job came out good, proper orky. The rough finish of the panels helps a lot. It's a cool method of using all the plastic you get. What with the price of kits now, it's something to consider. Would like to see some terrain made with the melted sprue juice.
yellow is really tricky, a nice tip is to spray the whole model white then from only underneath spray it pink so u can see pink shadows, u could use ur new airbrush for this but a spray bottle works fine, then spray yellow over the whole thing with an airbrush, as yellow is slightly transparent, the shadows come out really nicely, i have used this technique on a bad moons battle wagon and it looks great, u should definitely try this
Ya the reason the yellow looked green was because it dried translucent and allowed the black to come through. With yellow, you need a lighter under coat to avoid this.
Hey man, my buddy swears by priming a model you want to paint yellow in pink. I've seen the final results and it's confusingly effective. I'd say look into it if you insist on torturing yourself to do yellow :P I'm always excited to see you make stuff out of sprues. It's awesome!
I think the Paint job ultimately turned out really nice. With some kit bashing using found objects I think your tutorial here could make some thing really extraordinary. Thanks for sharing
Great job on the build. The reason the yellow looked green was because you put it directly on a black base coat. For yellow, the darkest you want to prime is a mid brown.
Increadible build! Just a quick tip on the yellow. Dont use a black primer. Most black paints have a touch of blue in them. So bright yellow will cover very poorly, and be tinted green.
I was skeptical at first (I'm an old git) but the more I watched the more brilliant it became. Well done! It's stuff like this that would've kept me going when I worked for GW not the "I need to paint like Golden Daemon" but building and having fun! As it should be. Bash on!
Sometimes its difficult painting, I used to paint my marines bright green and it put me off the hobby for a good while, but im back at it painting them a nice gray dark with silver highlights and green eyes, if you feel you dont like the paint job, it might be worth having a sit back, changing the lighting, maybe go for a walk around with the model in your hand to see what different lighting in your house is like, then going back in for some finishing touches
Great build, so using a bright yellow like that tends to give it a green tone. If you sponged on some Ochre first then did some yellow I think it would have done what you wanted. Great build, cheers for the video mate
Cool build. It's really amazing what you can do with these sprues. In the end the paint job looks fine to me. Yellow straight over black is notoriously difficult to make look good, even for a master painter. If you want to use such a bright color it's better to use another approach. There are a few options. - basecoat light grey or white first. - paint an opaque ochre craft paint before painting yellow. - use yellow spray paint as a base layer. Of course a collab with another hobbyist is also a great idea.
I'd say you managed to save the paint job. True, the bright yellow made it look like a toy car 😆 But that's just a part of the process. Keep at it brother, you're doing great 😁
I am really impressed with the liquid sprue material! I found it fascinating that you could roll it out like putty into thin sheets. I think you did an excellent job of scratch building this and it looks like the photo. I too am not a fan of painting and I would rather build then paint any day. Thanks for sharing this.
I new little to nothing about War Hammer or model making before stumbling on your channel & am thoroughly enjoying- even shared them with friends. Keep up the great work!
I ...really... don't know what to say.... I just stumbled across your videos while repairing a scratchbuilt ork killtank and thought... no, another of those cheaphammer guys making trash... but damn, your work is absolutely stunning! I still can't believe you do this out of sprue! I mean, I melted some sprue in plasticcement to use it as supergoo to fill gaps and stuff but making orkish looking models out of it... no way!
A cracking conversion as always from the Da Vinci of sprues. But don't be discouraged from the painting, yellow is a pain in bum. I find mixing yellow and your bone coloured paints helps. But keep up the awesome work!
Hey mate, great job! As an imperial fists and bad moons player I can tell you the green tint in the yellow comes from the black containing a lot of blue hues. I always slap on a coat of mahagoni first, works great for me :)
I think you did an excellent job all around, it looks exactly like an ork mech would. Don't get yourself down with the painting side, it turned out fantastic!
Great job and well done in persevering with the yellow! I'd love to see your take on some sprue built scenery or terrain that isn't just simple boxes like I've managed so far!
I think it looks great, this is what distressed salvaged metal chucked together should look like texture wize, not sure the method would work for somethingthats supposed to look prisitine but for this is great
The build turned out great, I initially thought it was a genuine Ork Gorkanaut from thumbnail and short until you stated otherwise. As for the paintjob, maybe next try using a stiff paint brush and make sure that there isn't too much paint on the brush before applying it. You might find this technique works a lot better, although I think the green was mostly likely because of the dark colour underneath.
Couple years late, but just found your channel after looking for Ork conversion ideas for my new Ork army. This is genuinely so inspiring and the models you've built have turned out great, you're actually a wizard with what you do with sprues
Forget the sprue KING, you are the sprue GOD. Very impressed, your painting technique suits the Ork way, I like it. The dislike must be from a pansie Eldar player. Looking forward to the next build. 👍
You'z a zoggin legend!!! Love these videos. I'll buy a morkanaut tommorow, but if i want a gorkanaut without magnetising it together, i know how to make one now!
This is actually mental. A clever use of old sprues no doubt tho....Makes me wonder if melted acetone poured into a 3d printed mould get do something useful :-)
I would really love to see a cooporation with you building a model and one of the WH miniature painters painting it one day. and...is it just me or is the video a bit...milky? I really like the build videos and this one is really cool aswell It's just a bummer I can't see everything as well :(
Looks ok for me on screen, but I had the same problem some time of yellow looking green over brown. Putting a bit of red into the yellow helped me (so it's a bit more like maize yellow). It's cuz dark brown (or translucent light brown over black) has a lot of black, which is blue based, and with yellow it makes olive, I think. Also I would use a foam and not fibre based sponge. When you tear it apart, the fine structure gives you better paint chip/particle effect.
Your sprue videos inspired me to make stuff at home with them! they don't look half as good as yours but I'm glad there was someone else doing the same thing! My next project is a dakkajet
Considering all the faf that went into this, I think your painting came out fine, dry brushed, weathered, rusted, I personally don't like painting yellow but besides that, it looks great
I am really impressed, you're a true ork in your mind! Gork is pleased! as for next, you are clearly mastering the technique and all, maybe it is time to...build a ork-themed titan?
Ah yes, the joy of painting yellow! ^^ It did definitly turn greenish because it mixed with the brown underneath it, that happens especially with cheaper paints (I don't know what paints you use). A coat of varnish would've helped - or hairspray, which you can scrap off here and there and make a great chipping effect :)
That is actually so cool. I personally love the paint job, it perfectly captures ork nature lol. Probably the most entertaining video I have seen in a while. Keep up the great work!
It's come out really well, there were parts as you were building where it didn't look like it was going to look very good, then you worked your magic and turned those sprues into something incredible! I'd be up for painting somthing that you create, preferably orks so I can play around with weathering techniques 😂
I've been making a bunch of Necron Warriors and Skorpekh Destroyers with leftover sprue recently, and would love a tutorial on making a Doom Scythe! Hope you have a nice day!
This is really great! I haven't watched for a while but I'm glad I came back. I'm currently kitbashing my own Ork Warboss, making most of the spikey bits using sprues based on your previous videos! Cheers from Canada!
I don't know how you would do it, but I would love to see a Tyranid monster made from sprues, like a carnifex or an exocrine. Awesome stuff with the gorkanaught though!
Maybe an Ork Mek Workshop? Some kind of massive tellyporta or something like that. You'll have another box of plastic on its way to you as I type (ironically in an old, empty Gorkanaut box 😅)
Could you put some of the ooey-gooey-spruey-stuff into a vacuum chamber to try and get rid of the bubbles? Not sure how that would affect the acetone content or drying time, but might be worth the experiment to see if you can eliminate the bubbles when rolling out panels.
The legs at 4:43 radiate "daemon engine" to me, flip them over and they sort of resemble a colossal thunderhammer held by some sort of semi-organic machine
Man this is an awesome build! Also stop bashing yourself. I think you did a proper job with the painting and the modelling well it's just another level :D Looking forward to see other awesome stuff from you!
