I didn't include this in the tutorial, but here's some more technical advice for those wanting specifics: -Use OBS to record your screen. It's open source and it rocks. Lightweight video files that can be edited in common video editors. -Download and enable the Screencast Keys tool in Blender. It displays the keys you press, which viewers LOVE. -Don't use any theme other than the default. That's a sure fire way to confuse the viewer into thinking you've got a different version of Blender to them. -Increase the Display Scale (File>User Prefs>Interface) to around 1.3-1.5. This will make the buttons and text bigger and easier to see from a youtube (which most people watch in non-full screen) -Please NO MUSIC!

Thank you, ive just started making a bunch of creative tutorials for unreal engine and other programs, your timing on this video is awesome for me. I already know a lot of what you have shown, its really reassuring to know im not the only person that does that much practice, and that im on the right kind of track :) I just need a better mic and ive been explaining too much in my intros i think. Free education is the future! OBS is super useful for all sorts of things. And he is right just chill and be yourself :) I like to try and show the final result of the tutorial in the intro if the tutorial is long, because i found, when i was first learning from places like this, that seeing the end result at the beginning helped keep me interested throughout videos that are longer than 1 hour... maybe that could be useful but dont explain too much! :)

I actually used to use Shadowplay often, it has great quality and is easy to use but it doesnt work on all computers and i dont think it has as many options as OBS. Such as switching windows and changing webcam and layout with hotkeys while recording/streaming, which can be very useful. So OBS is safer to recommend and Shadowplay works great too :)

wow. knocked it out of the park with this one. this is a great example of how being really good at something isn't ALL that's needed to be good at TEACHING it. Teaching / Presenting is it's own skill. This video brought up several things I had never thought of. I like the 'Make Mistakes' tip.

As for 12:50, I used to teach kids film making. And I would say, "How many video players can you buy that don't have sound, and how many audio players can you buy that don't have video?". That's the importance of sound.

Andrew Price is an invaluable resource - not for his blender tutorials (which are very good and useful training), but for his analyses of the emerging blender community to help us stop and think about what's important. Having someone review the tutorial process we all use to get started with blender is something I didn't know I needed until I saw this. Equally having someone how to explain what makes art more appealing, the critique videos - these are the truly helpful aspects. Thanks a lot!

Andrew Price, the Bob Ross of Blender tutorials, has gone meta. Seriously though, AP's tutorials are usually some of the easiest on the eyes, ears, and brain. As a Blender hobbyist, I usually have a lot of fun following along, and I always learn something.

Dude, you are probably one of the first persons to do a Video on this topic, to this level and info. There are people that have made videos about how they make their Tutorials, but do not explain what you explained. The extent of what the RU-vid audience is searching for. Bravo, sir.

The section on practice (4:50) is incredibly useful - I think most people wing it on their first try, then have a much harder time editing. And people don't do multiple "takes" because it's exhausting, but I think they really want to capture the original feeling of take 1. But going through 6 practice versions I can see how you both fully nail it, and have the, well, practice to perform even better than the feeling of take 1. Btw I asked ChatGPT to summarize that section and here is the list it gave me: 1. Experiment and problem solve, trying to figure out the tutorial 2. Analyze the first recording and fix any mistakes 3. Simplify or remove any unnecessary steps 4. Perfect the process and commit each step to memory 5. Rehearse how to explain the tutorial in the final recording 6. Hit record with confidence and knowing what to say

Excellent advice. As a learner I appreciate your tutorials precisely because you explain the *why*. I wish you'd (briefly) explain what you're about to do more often. (As a teacher I could bore you with the tedious pedagogy behind that, but trust me, it helps). You hit the nail on the head with the off-topic and mistakes too. It helps with engagement as it shows you're human. Spotting mistakes is also one of the great ways of mastering subjects and a technique that's used in teaching a lot (entirely deliberately of course....) I've been thinking about making a few tutorials myself - the best way to learn anything so that you really understand it is to teach other people. You may have just inspired me (though Santa will have to buy me a decent mic if I'm going to make them public!) I often feel like I'm talking to myself rather than Yr9 bottom set maths, so talking into a mic won't be a problem - at least it won't start asking me why it can't just do fractions on its calculator.

Andrew. You was my first teacher into self teaching. Because of that, I learned a lot more other things by just searching it on google or youtube. I've started to learn graphics design since 13 and one of the first channels I followed was yours. I didn't even knew English very good in that time, but following your tutorial and seeing your actions, I've started to understand you, and understand better English. By doing your tutorials I saw that I really can do things that are useful for others, like for my parents business. I made them a 3D logo and made their products into 3d. I was really proud of it. Because of that I moved to an art school with the architectural profile. You made big impact on my life in a very positive way :). Now... I've lost my interest to art, and switched to programming. Now that's what I like to do. But even though I'm not working anymore in blender, I still check your videos :) I like them a lot. I just want to thank you for all your hard work that you put in in these tutorials

As someone who's made a few tutorials (and stopped), this is really inspiring. I primarily stopped for three reasons: 1. Not knowing what to cover 2. My MacGyvered solutions always ended up with a hole or two 3. People watching the videos cared less about learning and more about getting the finished product. When I offered download files, they just grabbed those, and it discouraged me a lot.

Can you make more architecture visualization tutorials? :S I wanted to join your Architecture Academy lectures but found out that you withdrew from it and changed plans. I absolutely understand it as a big fan of you. I just got into learning Blender and over the last some weeks I've improved sooo much with your tutorials and Poliigon. I knew and still know that I will have to learn 3ds max for my career but I seriously thought about it for weeks at the beginning and the only reason why I chose to learn Blender was because of your channel. Because I knew that with the best teacher I could learn better and faster, which became true. I can see that you also know that well because you made a tutorial about making a tutorial haha. Anyhow the architecture tutorial about making a bathroom was great and I learnt a lot! I hope there will be more series coming out! :D Lastly a question I have is, as a Korean fan I was surprised when I found out that your company was registered in S Korea? It just made me curious a lot for many days haha

As someone who watches a lot of tutorials, I agree with a lot of what you say. When I'm following along step-by-step, sometimes the instructor telling a quick antidote gives me time to catch up. Also, I don't mind a video intro, as long as it's 3 seconds or under. One more thing, the start of the video should show the finished product so I know if I want to watch it

And now, how to set up YOUR mic to reduce ’plosives’. Place your microphone slightly to the side of your mouth and angled slightly as well so that you’re not speaking directly into it. Your P, K and S’s etc. will be great rate reduced and come up across much more professional sounding !! Also a high pass filter somewhere around 80 Hz or so will reduce the load and rumble. Also, the closer you get to your microphone the more you introduce the “proximity effect“. So experiment by getting close enough to give you that nice, low, full radio sound, with out being so close that you’re drowning the mic. 🎙 Cheers

Thanks. This is all great advice. My biggest dilemma in making tutorials is the choice between spontaneous or pre-scripted. Spontaneous tutorials - recording the voice-over as you perform the lesson - provide a more relaxed, friendly, and inviting feeling. But, they are prone to making mistakes, flubbing dialog, and forgetting important dialog or operations. On this account, I think spontaneous tuts tend to be 2 - 3 times longer than they need to be. I have chosen to go the pre-scripted route - recording my dialog first, then recording the video in time with the audio. In this manner, I am able to cram all the important and necessary points into a shorter time frame, and say exactly what I want to communicate in exactly the way I think it should be said - including everything that needs to be said, and leaving out everything that doesn't. Making mistakes can be informative, but most people just want to learn how things are done, not how they are not done. I get infuriated having to sit through 2 - 3 minutes of dead-time while the presenter fumbles around trying to recover from their mistakes. Pre-scripted tuts tend to have a dry, impersonal, and distant feeling to them, but that can be partly overcome with a good script and delivery. I first tried doing it spontaneous, and found it to be frustrating, and a monumental waste of time. I can't remember what I want to say and concentrate on performing the steps all at once. The nice thing about a pre-recorded script is that it tells me what I'm supposed to do so I don't loose my way through the operations. I think pre-scripted takes a lot longer to create, but saves time for the viewer on the backend. Another point you don't mention that I am pushing myself toward, is including lots of supplementary graphics to emphasize, highlite, and add data to parts of the lesson that are not clear from observing the program interface alone. One thing I am conflicted about is deciding how much needs to be explained. Some people just want to know how to arrive at the end result, but I feel it its important to know why you are doing things, and why you are doing them in a certain way. Over-explaining a concept can get boring real fast and loose an audience, so it is a delicate balance between too much information and getting to the point.

I see the best tutorial has a campfire tale feel. Soft Talking but with a warm atmosphere.

I believe that it's usually a good idea that no matter who you are or who's teaching that you do the tutorial until you are confident in what you've learned. You can't watch the tutorial once and have learned it as if you were with the person teaching so you should watch and complete it, since you will get all of your questions out of your head and the methods teached ingrained into your brain. You never get 100% from just watching a tutorial once, and if you don't have any questions, then try and do what the tutorial tought you to do, but this time you don't watch the tutorial, then you'll know if you've actually learned what you set out to learn.
