Xenia we've chosen to no longer handle our soscumdns since one was dropped by a client. And the specimen subsequently died.

I've stopped handling all my tarantula as part of an agreement I had to make with my wife in order to house live spiders. Believe me, I want to handle them again. But a promise is a promise.

Spiders are temperamental and their appetite goes down with the approach of winter. They begin to speed up with feeding as the temperature gets warmer.

I have a water dish inside the enclosure which is always full and I keep the substrate moist at 85% moist so that all the vapour that evaporates is humid for the spider. The enclosure has vents close to the base which means that the enclosure retains much of the moisture with little escaping. But it allows enough air movement to prevent any mold from growing.

I have never met a pink toe that is amenable to being held. This species is not a relaxed species and I would not advise trying to handle it. If you must try, then the way that I would do it would be to take a large paint brush and gently coax her out and onto your hand. That would be the only way that I would try it with reducing the chances of being bit. Please keep in mind that they are fast and skittish. If she is triggered and runs away into a crevasse, it may be a great challenge to retrieve her. Best luck.

I am not suggesting that people do not hold them. I am also not suggesting that there are people who have held them and not have been bitten. I am only informing you that there are other species that are having the temperament that are suited for holding far better than the pink toe. Please consider this fact: The pink toe is an arboreal species that likes to live within its webbing. This means that it has specially evolved sensory organs to detect movement on the webbing to hunt for unsuspecting prey. When a hand or a paint brush goes into its domain, its going to be invariably scared and overwhelmed. In other words, it will be triggered. The fight or flight response has the greatest potential to create a bit response. I do not believe as a spider lover, that you would want to stress out your pet. Nor do I believe that you would like to increase the chances of you getting a bite from your pet. This is why I wrote to you what I did. At the end of the day, you are welcome to follow the advice of anyone you wish. I gave you my 2 cents since you asked. I wish you and your pink toe the best.

No worries. After I wrote to you, I went to see my own pink toe and I tested it out on my own to see if she would be ferocious or not. And indeed, no matter how gently I tried to approach her, she became skittish and then began to flick hairs. There was no chance to clam her down to interact with her. I maintain the same recommendations to you. Best wishes.

Some people live in countries with good tap water . It depends on where you live really .

no, it would be fine. they actually do perfectly fine in dry conditions, just keep a full water dish and overflow maybe once a week or so. i highly recommend Arachnoboards.com if you are serious about getting a tarantula, tons of very experienced keepers there who are always happy to help.

George B. Yes I agree.!!.. I have avics and they do just as well when kept like a B.smithi..!!.. Just spray the enclosure lightly every 3 days.!!.. Definitely sounds like pre moult behaviour

Just an update, I got the pink toe. It is a juvenile still, but doing well. I fed it myself for the first time last night, I have only had it for a short while, and it is quite the spectacle

watchusreviewstuff they are dangerous to hold and it is NEVER recommend to hold one. Even if is a fairly docile species.

I would not, unless you boil in and make sure it is peeled of bark, because you don't want any harmful bugs or diseases

You can bake it in the oven too. That will kill anything that's living in it

Had my pink toe tarantula several months now. Mine arrived at local pet Shop! Have a tall enclosure, sponge in water dish, and tall artificial plant for climbing, even put in a wood ladder for added climbing. Low amount substrate at bottom. I Keep things moist, do use tap water but carefully set out overnight to reduce any chlorine gas. Other spiders few years now, Arizona Blonde, and Rose Hair. Caution the Pink Toe is speedy! Mine feed weekly to 10 days, Pink Toe gets 3 small crickets, eagerly goes down to feed. Other tarantulas medium size get a large cricket, remove water dish and coax cricket to them gets a safe feed.

Joshua Lafever I have a pink toed tarantula and given the choice of climbing onto my hand or a piece of plastic to move him he always goes for the plastic. I can handle him just fine and do when I need to but I use something other than my hands to move him when I can because it’s less stressful on him.

Good to know My seems to be pretty content with me just snatching her up with four fingers around her body until she puts her legs on my fingers I handle her that way she’s calm and doesn’t jerk or try to spray poop on me now

Kenneth Purboadji Sponges are terrible for T’s, well known for them being a breeding ground for bacteria and infections for the T.

Tony Gray I have a pink toe and I just make sure he always has small live crickets in his tank. He does really well this way and it’s easy to do, since crickets are so cheap.

Sponges welcome bacteria and mold. Use rocks if anything.
