Remember to pivot as you swing. You can generate alot more force if you're moving both of are arms. When swinging you should also have a looser grip on the upper part of the shaft to quickly slide down as you swing

When you make the metal band a little wider and thicker + make the handle slightly tapered ( thicker towards the metal parts ) , it becomes even more effective. That's how my ancestors ( i'm a Flemish-Belgian- from Flanders -the Dutch speaking Northern part of Belgium ) made it to use it against the French knights. With succes : they won ' The Battle Of The Golden Spurs ' against the French in 1302 with it. Known because it was the first time a largely civilian army won against an army of knights.

Nice work! Do you think you could make a goedendag with a billhook on one side and a seat-belt cutter on the other? You could smash in a window and pull somebody out like a fish. If you have to cut the seatbelt, you can.
Awesome, if you ever wanted to change the wood color, simply stain it after sanding down the pole using 120/180 grit sandpaper. I think back in the day they would use linseed oil or tung oil, both would be applied with a rag and would bring out the wood grain. If you wanted to go bananas sand it down using 220/320 grit after the stain and then top coat it with clear coat. Great work boss
If you ever want to paint the entire stick a different color, prime it first using an oil based paint. I recommend “zinsser cover stain” it will provide you with a blemish free/fresh/clean surface to paint whatever color you’d like, and since it’s oil based it won’t chip off/peel
I've thought about doing something like this myself using almost this exact set of materials. I would likely use different wood for the staff part. I have access to liveoak rods and you have a belt sander, which I don't have. You have to make what you can with what you have, so no condemnation here. One thing I like about this method is that the nail is part of the weapon's function but also acts like the wedge used to haft a hammer. I have access to live-out rods and you have a belt sander.

perhaps use a thicker shorter staff it was initially made for city militias in large quantities, the courtrai chest depicts men at arms with goedendags, (you don't use the hard german g but a dutch softer g goo den dach would be best to imagine it in english goedendag may have indeed been a humorous name, some say it could be goede dagge, which would roughly translate to good stabber but even so with the double entendre of also meaning good day the real story has less to do with the weapon, in Bruges Flemish militias slaughtered the french garisson, to do so they demanded they would say schild en vriend, the french had just as much trouble sounding dutch as you do and they would say skilt en vrrient, then they would get killed
