Hi my name is Theo Cook I’m the head tutor at Robinson House Studio furniture school here in the UK. In this video I will show you step-by-step how I made this joint and the techniques are used. So maybe you can try it yourself or pick up a few new techniques.
See the schools website for more information about us and courses we run ➡️ www.marcfish.co.uk
Please subscribe to our channel and click the bell button to be notified when we upload new videos.
To see more images of some of the pieces I have made and things I'm working on please follow me on Instagram at / theo__cook
Here's a bit of history about me and my training.
I’ve been a furniture maker for more than 20 years, over which time I’ve been lucky enough to study and work at some of the finest workshops in the world.
As part of my five-year apprenticeship at the Edward Barnsley Workshop in Hampshire, in the U.K. I spent a year studying under James Krenov at the College of the Redwoods in California,
Following my apprenticeship, I stayed on at the Barnsley Workshop for two years as a craftsman, before working for prestigious furniture-makers Senior and Carmichael as a senior craftsman for nine years.
I currently teach cabinetmaking at Robinson House Studio in Newhaven, in the U.K. while working on my own creations.
To find out more about Robinson House Studio furniture school and other courses, go to www.marcfish.co.uk
During my career I have been awarded two Guild Mark certificates by The Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers: one for a side table I produced while at the Edward Barnsley Workshop and another for a mechanical cylinder desk commissioned by the Marchioness of Bath. Images of the desk can be seen at: senior.atspace....
I have also had the privilege to make a commission for a duchess and a display cabinet for the former Lord Chancellor that resides in the Palace of Westminster.

I enjoyed this video very much. If I may, the only critique I have is possibly showing some examples of furniture where this joint has been used. To have the skill is good, but to be inspired to use the joint is even better. Keep up the good work. Thank you.

I get the impression that these are MORE decorative than the common or garden dovetails but not as strong . The video however was excellent in its presentation.

instead of using sticky tap for the guide block and a sliding bevel for each angle you can chisel the guide block to fit on the joint and remove and replace it to the same spot to trace all the lines one face at a time, I'm not sure this is quicker but it's certainly easier if you're doing more than one joint, or don't have sliding bevels Great video.

Amazing to see the process. Understood the angle cutting, but first time I saw how to get the layout correct with the blocks and multiple sliding bevels. Going to have to try it out. For the gluing and clamp up - I am wondering since the pins will stand proud, does the flat clamping block prevent the joint from seating?

Wow, I've never seen a Japanese dovetail before. Your saw skills are impressive. I actually learned a new techinique watching how you followed the line at an angle and then cut deeper once it was established. I'm sure that will help my normal dovetails tremendously! What kind of vise is that? I'm sure they no longer make it but do you know the manufacturer and name of the vise? I want to try and find a used on somewhere. Thanks!

I need to make a table for my new PC, and will probably use oak since i can't afford Australian Buloke. But knowing that the latter is the most dense wood in the world, will it be impossible to make square legs that fit seemlessly with the table top, using those kinds of joints? Also can i create those kinds of joints with oak and be able to remove the legs if i need to move the table to another location?
6 лет назад
A considerable technical achievement, no doubt.......but why, apart from that, would anyone want to make a joint so needlessly complicated?

Given the 45 degree joint, I suppose if you made a 4 sided box all 4 sides would have to slide together at once. 😅. Oh the agony and satisfaction that would be.

Theo, my .02, you should have stuck with just the basic joint and made it start to finish without the pre-completed piece and the other possibilities. It was too scattered to have all the options presented in one video. Nevertheless, it sure is a cool piece.

The 'concave' chisel is actually a 'convex' chisel, I think? You seem to be rolling it around on the square, instead of it leaving a gap? 18:45
@buffdogg
