How to Make a Jelly Roll Quilt Top (for beginners)

This jelly roll quilt top was so much fun to make. I'm new to quilting and thought this would be an easy quilt top to try...and it was. You may see other videos where they say it only takes an hour or so, but if you're a beginner like me, it's takes a few more hours (and some breaks too). It's definitely worth the time :)
I used one jelly roll (Moda Basics Dottie Jelly Roll), which was 40x 2.5-inch by 44-inch strips.
My finished quilt was about 63" x 47" with about a 1/2" border.

Thank you so much for your tutorial. The other ones out there are too quick and hard to follow. Thabks to you I am making my first quilt! I will put the picture up here if someone can tell me how to do that! It's my boyfriend and I's two year anniversary . He can buy anything he wants so I thought, why not make him something special? Now hell have a new quilt all thanks to you!

OMG.....I am a newbie to quilting. Recently bought my first jelly roll and you can see the confusion in my head. There's a lot of video tutorials, but it made me more confused. Now I found your own tutorials and I enjoyed very much. Showing the mistakes and how to correct them is also a plus. Thank you.

I really enjoyed your jelly roll tutorial. I'm really going to give this a try. But I'm going to cut my own jelly roll strips wider probably 4 1/2 to 6 and 1/2 inch strips and use your method of sewing them together because the fabric I'm using has a larger print and I want to be able to see the print better but your method can be used on any fabric it's really awesome thank you for putting this tutorial out there and yes it is an easy one to follow

Nice video and good explanation. Great machine too! One difference I notice between this and others is, after all the strips are sewn together and before joining the first set, I've seen other tutorials where about 18 inches is cut off before joining. What that does is offset the strip seams and prevent them from being close to the edge.
@wendywilson1736
@wendywilson1736 5 месяцев назад
I cut all my strips in half, sewed a white squares on one end, then sewed them together. Seems the white squares add just enough length to the whole strip to help offset the ends. Don't know how, or care. But my white squares are evenly spaced, and I didn't have to match any seams in the whole top!

Two years ago I taught myself how to make quilts using RU-vid videos. I've been sewing since I was 10 but two years ago I made my first quilt and it was a quilt using the jelly roll method, only I didn't use a jelly roll. I used a small portion of the 8 years worth of scraps I had built up and was storing for later use, so all the strips where various different lengths so I didn't need to do the "cut 18 inches off" thing. But it was a lot of fun and I have since made about a dozen quilts of about every size and used different methods. And I can confirm that it did take me longer than the quilters on RU-vid to make my first quilt since it was, again, my first quilt. But since I had been sewing for 8 years (about 10 years now, I'm 20) I got the hang of it very quickly.

Before you sew the first ends together, you need to take about 18 inches off of one side. That way they will be staggered strips.

And yes your sewing machine is one to be owned it looks like it's in good shape from what I can see I learned to sew on a old singer similar to what I think yours might look like it was black and had 1929 printed on it I think in Gold letters with a foot treadle it was my great-grandmother's it was a beauty I would be interested in seeing a post of what your machine looks like from a front view and a little bit of history about it that would be awesome if you could do that thanks again

I have two variations to offer people who enjoy this method but prefer smaller, scrappier pieces in their quilts instead of long swaths of color. After completing the Jelly Roll Race top, cut it apart (GASP!) either perpendicular to your strips, or on the bias, into strips as wide as the originals. Then re-start the Jelly Roll race using these newly created strips. One variation gives you a wonderful quilt full of dancing scrappy squares, the other gives you excitingly scintillating angles rippling through your quilt. The bias version is an excellent place to use the Continuous Bias Binding method for cutting the strips, if you know how to do that.

Thank you! This is my first sewing project after failing to get the hang of my sewing machine years ago and being forever depressed about it. I'm terribly impractical, and yes, I sewed a few together the wrong way and accidentally wound the bobbin reel instead of the bobbin, but thanks to you I did it! Step by step. Most videos assume you're basically competent which clearly I'm not! Thanks for breaking it down slowly and being really relaxed if you made an error, it was inspiring when I did. I now have a lovely quilt top. Now I just need to work out how to sew a border without sewing myself to my chair...

If you put the first end under the needle and presser foot to hold it, then straighten out the whole strip First, you Won't Ever have issues with twisting. I know it takes time, but it is well worth it!! Then you won't have waste because of jagged edges. I don't understand the need to see how fast one can sew this together. The whole top is pretty quick anyway. But taking extra time to keep things straight in the process will be more satisfying in the end.😊

Cool old machine, and fun video. Those older machines have such quality! I have been sewing for over 50 years and I like to make jelly roll quilts. They are simple and so fun. They turn out so bright and pretty!!! I was just working on one today of bright jewel tones, with mermaids on it, for a little 4 year old girl I know who doesn't have much. I hope she enjoys it. My son found an old machine in the shed of his "new" house, and I took it. I have to fool with it and see if it works. I have also discovered "book pillows." They are fun and easy to make for kids. Little kids just seem to love them. Check them out and have fun sewing!

heatherrn65 Thanks for watching! It was a great first quilt for me and I really enjoyed making it :) After I finished the quilt top, I used a fusible cotton batting between the top and a backing. The fusible cotton batting means you just use your iron to stick everything together, which I found easy. Then I quilted everything together following the straight lines of the fabric and used the fancy stitches I had on my machine. I then squared up the quilt and added a binding. Sorry, but I didn't film the rest of the quilt part! I'll try to remember to do that part the next time :)

Actually you only cut 18 inches from one end of the jelly roll... then it staggers the places where the fabric meets.... also the jelly roll has two strips of each color in a row... I think it's prettiest if you take only one of them and to make it more random I would take some of the second set and place them at the bottom making it random what pattern comes next... but for your very first jelly roll quilt you did great... one of the first times i made a jelly roll quilt I was working on it in a hotel and was running out of time before checkout and left a bunch of the little triangles on the floor... the hotel charged me additional... which was crazy cause it would clean up easily with a broom or whatever... which I didn't have... anyway happy sewing

At about 16:25 the video shows why you are supposed to cut 18 inches off the end after sewing the strips together on the first go round. At that point you only have a single strip where you cut off the 18 inches. I never understood why you would do that as most people just tell you to cut it off, without explaining why. Thanks

@Mrsgooses
@Mrsgooses 8 лет назад
+Deborah Ring I haven't tried a queen size version of this jelly roll quilt yet, but I have found this amazing and detailed explanation/formula for making a queen size. You basically need to make two separate (and different sized) jelly roll quilt tops and sew them together. weefolkart.com/jelly-roll-race-quilt-changing-quilt-size-determining-number-strips/ The whole article explains why and how and is worth the read, but this is the summary paragraph: "Your queen sized Jelly Roll Race Quilt, with horizontal strips, and no border, will take 64 strips for the initial quilt + 32 strips for the add-on section = 96 strips need for the whole Jelly Roll Race Quilt top. So you need 3 fabric jelly rolls (with 40 fabric strips in each jelly roll) to make this quilt." Cheers!

I must say I thoroughly enjoyed watching this. I have seen others "How to do jelly roll tops", but this is the first time watching someone do it for the first time. I'm just starting to sew again after many years of being inactive and I want to make quilts; and this one did look like an easy one to start out with. I had my doubts that it would go as quickly as other videos made it seem. Frankly, I think that it will probably take me longer than you to finish. I had wondered about at the very beginning of seeing these kinds of jelly rolls quilts, how you'd keep the strips from being twisted at the end; no one ever mentioned it in the other quilt videos. Nice to know it is just a matter of cutting the ends and untwisting it. I do have a couple of questions. What was the size of the binding? How large was the finished quilt? I read in your response to heatherrn65 that you has essentially "stitched in the ditch" to quilt, but used the fancy stitches that came with your machine. Any chance you could show us what that looked like? It sounds like a really great idea. I really liked your choice of the fabric pattern of dots, I thought it came out really well. Thank you for sharing this.

AthenaSchroedinger Hi Athena. Thank you! My binding was 2.5" wide and then I folded that in half (ironed it) and then sewed it onto the quilt. I ended up with 1/2" on each side of the finished quilt. This quilt was made with one jelly roll and ended up about 63" x 47". Here are a couple of photos of the quilting: i.imgur.com/Pr6yGZ7.jpg?1 i.imgur.com/e5G8Cg9.jpg?1 As there's a lot of color and pattern on the top, you can see the different stitches much better on the back of the quilt. This was a super fun and easy quilt to start with, so a great quilt to start with :) Cheers!

mrs gooses goodies Thank you for the information. I really appreciate it. I also like how those stitches looked as well. Very clever way to quilt.

So, can I just clear this up, once you join the rolls together, you cut off 18 inches, before sewing the ends the second time?

Youre actually suppose to cut the 18" off the first piece. She said she forgot that step.
