How to use air dry clay and watercolor paint to create a keepsake that mimics the look of my ceramic dishes, without the need for a kiln or any special equipment. Anyone can create these, and it’s also a fun and easy project to do with kids and teens.

For this piece, you’ll need:
· A block of air dry clay. I used DAS brand white modeling clay
· Regular watercolor paints.
· ArtDeco brand Triple Thick Gloss Glaze
· Gilding Paint. I used the Liquid Brass color on the rim of this piece. I applied it with a size 6 Royal Langnickel round-tip brush.
You will also need a leaf- I used a hydrangea leaf but you can use whatever you have available. Just choose a leaf with some interesting veining and patterns on the backside so that it will leave an interesting impression in the clay. Use a rolling pin of any kind, and a working surface such as a silicone mat or other smooth surface that can be wiped clean.
Instructions:
Roll the clay to an even thickness, about one-quarter inch. If the clay feels dry, knead a bit of water into the clay to soften it. If it’s too dry, it will wrinkle and crack as you shape the dish. Place the leaf backside down on the clay. Then use the rolling pin to firmly and evenly press the leaf into the clay. Gently remove to expose the impressed pattern.
Cut out the leaf shape. Smooth the edges very well with your fingers and a damp sponge. Drape the leaf on a rounded rock or bowl or curved surface to get a curve in the leaf.
Leave the leaf or the rock and set it aside to dry completely (a few days). Once dry, paint the leaf with diluted watercolor paint.
Once the piece is completely dry again, seal the piece and create a glossy finish with the DecoArt Glaze. Brush on an even layer, coating the inside and rim of the dish. This sealer doesn’t show brush strokes and dries with a smooth finish.
After 24 hours, you can apply the liquid gold or brass paint to the edge if desired. #botanical art #diycrafts #makeyourown #clayart

I remember using DAS as a little girl in the 60s...and absolutely loved it. What a marvellous new invention it was for a creative little girl. I was surprised to see it in your video. I had only recently remembered DAS after all these years and have been thinking of using it again. Then lo and behold by chance I see your video. 😊

Yes, I do too. 😊 Ceramics has a special beauty and durability - each ceramic piece I make requires multiple kiln firings that take a whole day each time. 🌱 Lots of people have asked for a tutorial using an air dry clay, so this is probably as close as I can get it to the look of my ceramics. I hope people find it useful 😊💙

Very beautiful and helpful I love it.. what about the beautiful plate you used to mix the color.. is it also air dry clay? Does the sealer make the leaf water proof? Thank you for sharing
@VuvuCeramics
@VuvuCeramics Месяц назад
Great question! Air dry clay is not waterproof and makes only decorative pieces. The little dish where I mixed up the watercolor is a ceramic dish. (Those are the type of dishes I actually create and sell… ) They are all fired in a pottery kiln to 2250°F. So they are completely vitrified and waterproof. But air dry clay is not.

Could you apply the gold before you apply the triple thick?
@VuvuCeramics
@VuvuCeramics Месяц назад
Great question! Yes, … BUT the gold will look shinier when applied to a smoother surface. So it will look shinier when applied after the sealer since the sealer creates a smoother surface compared to the air dry clay alone. If you want to apply the gold before the triple thick, just make sure the rim is very very smooth.

Great work! First question, can you use gold acrylic paint for the edges? Second, can you use mod podge to cover it?
@VuvuCeramics
@VuvuCeramics 2 месяца назад
Yes to both of those questions. If you click to read the description, I suggest DecoArt brush on glaze, but you can use Modpodge and it’s equally good. I didn’t cover the gold rim with the sealer when I created this piece, but that would be totally fine to do it. It will actually protect the gold and add extra gloss

Hi, may I know what I need to do to prevent my clay from cracking? I’ve made a few flat oval shapes for my cats’ paw prints and some of them cracked. 😞
@VuvuCeramics
@VuvuCeramics Месяц назад
Are you using the same brand clay I used in this video? The most common reason for air dry clay cracking is if the clay is rolled out too thin. Try to keep the thickness about 1/4 inch thick or more. Another common reason is if the clay dries very unevenly. When you are drying your oval shapes, you can flip them over every hour or two, so that both sides dry evenly. You can even dry it on a rack and that will be even better. Sometimes if the Clay drives unevenly, the uneven contraction can cause cracks. If you live in a very dry climate, you may want to drape plastic over your air dry clay shapes, so that it dries more slowly. Another reason is if the clay is too wet to start with. I hope my suggestions help!
@OrkunBasar
@OrkunBasar Месяц назад
No, I don’t think I can find the brand of clay you’re using where I am. 😅 I’ll definitely be more careful when I air dry my clay because I’d leave them in the sun. So now I know better. Slow and steady is the way. Thank you so much. ❤
@VuvuCeramics
@VuvuCeramics Месяц назад
@@OrkunBasar yes that’s what’s causing it- direct sunlight is the worst thing for any clay! Definitely dry indoors slowly with no sun. It will take a couple of days to fully dry 😊☀️

How do you finish the back of the leaf?
@VuvuCeramics
@VuvuCeramics Месяц назад
That’s a good question! I left it plain and unsealed. But you can also add the watercolor to the back side and seal it if you wish. If you do that, I would suggest doing it in two steps: coating the front side with the glossy sealer and letting it dry, then coating the backside and letting that dry. Sealing both sides is better for protecting the piece. You can also sign the underneath with either paint or a sharpie before coating it with sealer

Is there a foodgrade sealant? I'm thinking a birdbath using a big rhubard leaf.
@VuvuCeramics
@VuvuCeramics 2 месяца назад
That’s a great question. No, not for air dry clay. For food grade or waterproof pieces, you will need to go with the traditional pottery/ceramics that you see in my other videos that are not with air dry clay. For a birdbath, you could also go with concrete, or concrete in combination with glass or ceramic mosaic tile

@SledDog5678 2 месяца назад
@@VuvuCeramics THANK YOU!💕
@VuvuCeramics
@VuvuCeramics 2 месяца назад
@@SledDog5678 if you do a search on “sand casting concrete leaves” that’s a great method for casting very large leaves. I’ve made a birdbath that way before. You need concrete and a pile of sand- the sand will help support your leaf in the right curved shape as you add your concrete and capture all the leaf’s detail

How do you treat the back of the leaf?
@VuvuCeramics
@VuvuCeramics 2 месяца назад
Great question. I left the underside just plain and unsealed. You can definitely apply color and sealer to the underside as well- if you want it sealed, you can wait until the front dries, flip it over, and use sealer on the bottom. You can always sign the bottom too before sealing
