How to make a LotR elven cloak - I show you how to make the pattern & sew your cloak from start to finish. Modeled after the Lothlorien cloaks given to the fellowship by Galadriel (sometimes called the fellowship cloak). This pattern will work for all members of the fellowship with the exception of Gandalf whose cloak is a bit different. I made four of these cloaks while working on my Aragorn cosplay (one for each of my hobbit friends). Now my cloak comes with me on lots of hobbit adventures in the mountains. I get so many questions about my cloak so I figured it was about time I post a tutorial on how I made it.
Not idly do the leaves of Lorien fall, here's some links to purchase one.

FABRIC: You could use pretty much any fabric you like so long as it has a nice drape. I used a non-pill fleece fabric for my cloak. It's soft and cozy so I'm happy with my choice. The fact that fleece doesn't fray was a nice feature since I wasn't hemming the bottom. An accidental feature that I didn't plan for is that fleece doesn’t really wrinkle. Since my cloak is often stuffed in the bottom of my pack during hikes & pulled out for photos it's great.
The actual cloak fabric woven for the movie was made by Stansborough, here's a link to their cloak for a closer look at the fabric stansborough.c...
Materials you will need to make your elven cloak
- Fabric of your choice (I recommend patterning before shopping so you know how much you'll need, pay attention to the width of the fabric as it can limit your cloak length)
- Thread that matches your fabric
- Clasps of some kind, I used 2-3 hook & eye clasps on all my cloaks
- Something to reinforce the clasp area (interfacing would be the best choice if you already have it around, otherwise you could use more fabric, leather etc)

That was Pippin that said "short cuts make long delays." I can also say from following your pattern that doing anything from memory and not going back to the video to double check makes even longer ones! Thank you for the pattern.

I’m watching this tutorial for the same purpose! I’m going to a LOTR marathon on October 19th and I’m getting ahead making it sooner than later for once 😅 I just finished my skirt and now it’s time for the cloak. I’m also using weighty and warm fabrics to feel even more comfortable during the loooong screening haha and I think they’re playing the long versions of the movies so I’m in for about 12h 😂😴

These are quite pricey. Although, I recently acquired a wool cloak from Stansborough in New Zealand. It's the same company that made the cloaks for the Lord of the Rings films. It's woven on an old world loom using wool from their own sheep and is all one piece with no seams aside from the hood. It is truly a masterpiece. I've always been enthralled by the patterns on the LOTR cloaks, and admittedly, thought it was cinema trickery, but nope! That pattern is actually the cloak itself. I'd love to see more cloaks made like that. It elevates it to a level rarely seen. At the time of acquisition, it was around $500usd.

They are gorgeous! Way outside my budget but the price is to be expected for the craftsmanship.

@@SnappingDragon pictures and video do the Stansborough cloak an injustice. It really is a sight to behold. Cheryl and Keri were amazing to correspond with, too.

How tall are you? I need to make one for my 10 year old and don't want to make it too long, thanks

I'm not sure if i missed it in the video, but why 9cm for the neck hole? Where did that number come from? I'm making for a toddler so i wasn't sure how I should calculate that hole size.
@SnappingDragon
@SnappingDragon 12 дней назад
That number didn't come from a specific measurement, it's just as size that works for adults. If it's for a toddler I'd decrease the size of the neck hole. You want the circle portion of the pattern to be a bit larger than the size of the person's neck.
