At first, I thought that teaching people how to mark cards is a bad idea. But then I realized this is actually extremely useful for teaching people how to detect marked cards. So with that being said, good vid.
I suggest marking the upper left corners so when you fan the cards the markings can be seen. Also after marking with a sharpie use your finger to blot the ink (touch lightly) it will take any shine from the marking and make it blend in better.
This is a common way to mark cards. Whenever I handle a "new" deck, I always do a full riffle of the deck and watch the backs. These marks clearly stand out.
Tom Winn hah yea ik ive had people inspect mine and they cant even see that their marked. however when i look at it its like so obvious becuz thats the only spot ill look at now
If someone knows enough to 'take it to the movies' they will bust you. But no layman will know that. It is hard to find a marked deck that a magician cannot spot. I bought a deck from Harry Anderson and had to animate it 3 or 4 times before I could spot the marks. Great deck, but too expensive to use ha ha.
People ask me why do I win at backgamon all the time. I say: Well when I throw the dice I always consider what the following two throws will turn out to be too and I consider the odds of certain outcomes before making my moves. Then they ask me why do I win at Poker all the time. I say: Oh, at poker I just cheat.
Here's an easier way if the J-K is confusing. There are 3 apostrophe looking marks below and to the left of the flower. You color in the first apostrophe if J then middle for Q and right one for K. it's easier for instant recognition and harder to spot if you are looking at the cards closely. Thumbs up cause this helps!
I've been using this system (admitted using CHSD for the suits rather than the suggested order) and it works a treat. I've never had an audience member notice yet. Although a riffle test does quickly reveal the markings if the check is thorough. Nevertheless, excellent system and an excellent video. Thanks for uploading, brother.
I've been a mentalist/street magician for 4 years now and my tip is to use black bicycle cards. I've been using black bikes since a year ago and it means you can modify your deck with any pen on the go.
Black bikes are nice, but I don't like using any sort of "non-standard" decks in magic because in layman's minds there must be something fishy with the deck that they don't notice.
@@davidsmock8235 Black Bicycles are standard. You get em at Walmart in the 4 pack, they say Standard on the box, and the faces and courts are standard. No one will think any different if you pulled out a blue deck or a black deck.

When I marked my red bicycl edeck I noticed that the ink puddled and created dark spots. i used a small screw driver to knock some of the dried up ink off and it looks amazing. Thanks for the tutorial.
This is a nice system. I use my own memorized deck when I perform. Each card has a known numerical position in my deck. I just mark the number of the card. For example, the 9 of clubs is the 11th card in my system. Using my own marking system, I marked my 9 of clubs "11", rather than it's face value. Even if anyone sees a mark, they'll see no pattern unless they know the memorized order. Lots of fun magic can be done with marks. Thanks for the video.
That is so clever ! Anyone seeing the marks will immediately jump to the conclusion that they are unintentional and merely accidental ! (As they can see no pattern between the marks and the denomination of the cards !)
@techhoe you can generally get them from most magic stores and they are bicycle playing cards. you can also buy them online from amazon, online magic shops or other online shops. you can also buy in bulk from costco at about 12 decks in a box and it is really good value! Hope this helped!
As for the suits, I would mark the first triangle for the clubs, the second for the hearts, the third for the spades and the fourth for the diamonds, as it's easy to remember the CHaSeD order.
1) use a good magnifier. For a fact, having worked in micro-electronics, the hand perfectly follows visual clues. You'll save a lot of scraping away marker over-spills. 2) You can also invent your own intricate coding. The dot around the angel are just as good. But I like the hole idea. Not to cheat on anybody, but to amuse friends or even general public on a sidewalk performance.
Pipo The Astronaut because you couldn't get payed for RU-vid back in the day these people were making videos out of the good of their heart and the spread of knowledge
Excellent tutorial! I have been spending WAY too much on "magic" lately and this just helped save me a bit of $ I otherwise was being VERY tempted to throw down for the Boris Deck. Kudos!
Since this is the oldest trick in the book, maybe your next video can be about how to avoid being stabbed after people discover you're playing with a marked deck. Maybe some people didn't know exactly how the marking was done, but who has never heard of a marked deck?
@@jorgecarrizalesjr6589 Since playing cards in their relatively modern form have been around for about 1000 years or so, I'm sure the oldest tricks in the book were NEW IN 2009, so hum, ....yeah. Good point. The concept of playing with a marked deck was a common trope and reason for someone to get shot at the card table in old westerns of the 1960's, but hum... yeah, that thing you said about this video being from 2009, that's it. Hum.....yeah. Maybe you're so young that you underestimate how very old the oldest tricks in the book actually are.
Loads of magic is gaffed Havaseet.. There is no *real* magic, it's all illusions. This is a really helpful video for magicians. Most people don't even think to go and youtube it if they're not looking to perform them.
I have a deck my dad bought at a magic shop decades ago that's marked in basically the same exact way. Once you know the secret, it's impossible to miss, but if you don't know to look for it, it's a pretty sneaky method.
It is one way to mark a deck and is good and been around for many, many years. Use the smaller little swirls to make your marks and virtually know one can see them, even if they look close. The smaller the mark, the harder it is to detect with a riffle. Just don't get caught. Make sure your eyes are good.
I use the tiny dots below the petal that you use because they are much smaller making them even less obvious than your petals...it only takes a person to get cards that are sequential to notice that they are marked. It is definitely tough to tell that you're cards are marked but to an experienced cheater it sticks out like a sore thumb and people dont take it to kindly when they find out that you are cheating...your next breath is not guaranteed once they find out...you can make up your own so its easier to remember...the smaller the mark the better...those dots are 1/10 the size of the petals making it much much much harder to notice that the cards are marked...at the end of the day you just do what works best for you but making your own pattern makes it much easier to remember I feel personally...memory comes from an experience...that makes it easier to remember things...using as much stimulus in your senses as possible is the key to memorizing things...its much easier for everyone to watch a video about a subject and remember the contents than just reading a book and remembering the contents because of the extra visual stimuli...and this goes for everyone...except maybe rainman...in a nutshell it will be easier for you to make your own pattern rather than trying to remember someone elses
it sure SEEMS like it would take a short amount of time, but once you get started, you get tired of it ( unless you have a lot of motivation ). it took me about 45 mins. well worth it, even though it doesnt seem like so at the time.
dude i made the same marking system 4 years ago or so.. but i don't cover the whole spots just a bit of it towards the center and the same for the middle point, that way you can give the card to the spectator and he won't notice it even if he is familiar with the cards, plus I start with an ace on the top petal . Anyway good vid
I believe that Phil Ivey, poker legend, studied the deck of cards from some casinos--did not mark them--found and memorized the tiny imperfections (called edge sorting) from each card--where he found some of them could be identified-- and took a few casinos for a handsome amount in baccarat. I'm sure this is easier said than done.
@thekajkaj you can normally find them at a super store like Walmart or target. Although bicycle cards are american so I'm not shure you can find then at a store if you are not in the U.S. If so you can probably find them online.
For poker, you have to mark all 4 corners because you never know if someone will spread their cards mirrored, a good way to deter someone who marks cards. It's a bit harder for that person to see their own cards but easily doable.
One tip to anyone making marked deck or anytime you arrange cards by suit the CHASED method or CHSD Clubs Hearts Spades Diamonds is a great way to remember!
Just my opinion, but instead of marking out the WHOLE flower petal, just mark out like half, or just a fraction, b/c if a friend happens to either; Look REALLY close, or knows anything about marked decks, it'd be harder to notice than a complete petal. But thanks for the tutorial man!!
Looking at the front of the cards, the number or face of the card is always marked on the top left, because of this the cards will always therefore be fanned from left to right, which means that if you mark the back of the cards at the top right, the mark will not be visible in a fanned hand. The marking should there fore be done to the top left of the cards.
I have seen others using this same method but I need to read the cards quickly and prefer the CHaSeD order. So I mark the suits that way. The 'humps & points' seems too convoluted to me. 😀 Oh, also to the people saying to mark the left corner so you can see it in a spread - the pinwheel is so far over you would have to do an unnatural spread to get it to show, so either side works. The right side is hidden better and you will get busted less, I think.
I buy all my cards in bulk so I always have a few spare decks of cards, so if I mess up I just hope that I have another card like it, but it you do not have more that one deck, then be absolutely sure you will be marking the card on the right spots before you mark it.
Paint would work, but the sharpie dose not add any thickness to the card so no one can feel it on the card, and the sharpie is a lot cleaner then using paint.
That's great.. But wouldn't it work better if you mark the upper left and the down right corners? Cause when you fan 2 cards out (like in Hold 'em) one of the cards hide's those corners of the other card... Right???
Hence why when we ever play for anything of value we use brand new decks sealed that are opened at the table when game starts. We had someone bring a similiar deck and didn't take very long for us to figure it out. Mabee if he played it better he would've gotten away with it. Now he cries because he's not allowed to play with us anymore. Good to know how many are doing things as they always change.Marking decks and marked decks are not new but they are ever changing.
it is better to mark them on the left side because then if u ribbon spread the card u can see the card they pick (in the left corner) (right is covered if u spread left to right) once they find it and then when u ribbon spread them again u can reveal when the deck is obviously faced down.
It seems like you could figure out these cards were marked very quickly if you had any suspicion at all. The differences created by masking out these individual circles are not at all subtle and most people will quickly notice the discrepancy. Still interesting, though.
you basically think of a compass rose when you look at the flower so if anyone has trouble just think of the flower as a compass rose because of the directions
Also: how to cheat at stud poker without getting caught -- when it's your turn to deal, just memorize the top 4 or 5 cards as you pick up the discards and put them on top of the deck. Then when you shuffle, maintain the top 5 card stack as you shuffle. Offer the deck to be cut. When it's cut, somewhere in the deck there will be a slug of those 4 or 5 cards. As you are dealing the cards, when you are dealing the face-up cards, when you see the first card of the ones you memorized, you know the identities of the next 3 or 4 cards.
EXTRA: If you mark all four corners correctly and neatly, you can hand the spectator the card to examine and by comparing each corner to the rest of the card, they will not be able to the marked area.
Do everything he says on this video but for Diamonds, there is no point in marking the card at all. I just mark Spades as 1, Hearts as 2 and Clubs as 3. If there is nothing missing, you know it's a Diamond. Therefore, the Ace of Diamonds would not be marked at all. It works so much better. The lack of a mark for the suit is always a Diamond. It saves you time when marking the cards as well...
Wow that's really neat I never thought about doing that to my cards b4. What are marked deck named so I can look it up to buy one if I don't want to make it?
Didn't take me nearly as long as 45mins. Took about 2minutes to do a whole suit so 8-10min total time for the full deck. Although I sort the cards out first to make the process faster
wow, thank you so much, i have been wanting a marked deck forever and was looking on youtube to make my own deck and i was so lucky as to come upon this video!!! thanks so much
Got a question, on the 5 of clubs you marked the 4th petal round from the top, but if the ace was the the top, then it would be 1st - ace 2nd - two 3rd - three 4th - four 5th - fifth ......etc. However that means that you should have marked the bottom petal, for the 5, not the 4th one, which would be the four?
