How to Make a Martinez - Manhattan meets Martini

Today, I'll show you how to make a Martinez! Believed to be the evolutionary link between the manhattan and the martini, I believe this cocktail outshines them both. This recipe's heavy on the orange bitters, but I absolutely love it. I find using equal parts old tom gin and sweet vermouth helps to balance out the heavy hand of bitters. Definitely try this drink if you're a manhattan fan, martini fan, or simply enjoy a tasty cocktail. Cheers!

Is 1/4 oz of orange bitters too much? No. Also, I personally know the folks at North Shore Distillery who make the Scofflaw Old Tom Gin and they're good people - support them if you're in the area! Time stamps in the description! (And let me know how you make your martinez!) 🍸

You are right, the best is to go with your favourite bitters or at least using the right proportions to taste(which would definitely be as per a person's taste).. I had tried Fee Brother's some time back and I messed it up.. Maybe I added too much.. I avoided any kind of orange bitters for next few weeks until a friend talked me into experimenting it all again...And it was all good (which means I actually messed up the proportions in my first try). Btw I used 1/4 oz too this time.. was not too much!.

Is is valid to replace the orange bitters, or angostura bitters for something else as campari or something of the sort? Thank you. Love your videos

I am really enjoying this channel! I realized after watching this that I had 90% of the ingredients on hand (I used a tiny 1/8 oz /splash of Cointreau instead of about 1/8 of an ounce of the bitters, as all I have are Angostura orange bitters (which I dutifully used). I also used an Oroblanco (grapefruit) in place of the Lemon and that peel/zest worked very nicely as a garnish to accent the orange without over-powering the rest of the drink.

Best Martinez recipe I've found for this magic cocktail. The 1/4oz bitters is genius and pairs very well, never would've thought to try that. FYI I used Botanist gin, don't have an Old Tom (yet), this worked like a charm and tasted better than Beefeater, but not night/day better

Just tried making this and agree it is better than a regular martini. Had a couple of changes from what I had on hand. Used Gin de Fiori blood orange gin. Same ratios. For bitters cut the amount in half since only had Angostura orange on hand. Great nuanced drink overall.

I used dry gin and it was plenty sweet enough, though I also used carpano antica for the vermouth, don't know how that compares to the cocchi. One could also use dry gin and add a bit of syrup if desired. I just had Regan's orange bitters and added a little shy of .25 ounces, but a good amount. It was a very good drink and unexpectedly harmonious.

My desert island cocktail! Enjoyed your build quite a bit, but have you tried it with Boker’s Bitters? Something about the extra cardamon brings the aromatics and florals out of the old tom gin, and the funk out of the maraschino. And totally agreed on the lemon-the brightness is much appreciated. And agreed-way better than either a Martini or Manhattan!

Interesting! I love the Martinez, I've been using the curaçao, but upping the bitters definitely sounds worth a shot. Since you mentioned using the Fee's in a Brooklyn, would it be appropriate then to use the Brooklyn's Amer Picon (or a substitute like Bittermen's Amère Nouvelle) in the Martinez?! I feel like some experimentation is in order. Also, try this recipe with Luxardo's Sour Cherry Gin. 👌

The amount of bitters was fine I felt it was a little to sweet for my taste so either a London dry next time or maybe more Old Tom. I will try both. Tasted really nice just too sweet. I should also try the vermouth and see how sweet it is. I used the recommended vermouth but I have never had it before. As a suggestion could you do a Kentucky Flyer sometime?

I’ve only ever had this cocktail with Old Tom but I’ve never actually owned a bottle so I refuse to make it at home. 😅 I’ve never had it with so much bitters though. I like your rationale for it. Great vid! 🥃

Thanks, Vino! I admit, I've got Old Tom at home primarily just for this drink. I do like it though. Cheers!

Anders, brilliant video bro as always. I love a good Martinez, last time I had it the bartender used Gin A La Madame, and it was beautiful. Right now I’m sipping a classic Navy Grog (the honey version, I think it’s called number 1). Any chance you’ll do one on the channel? Enjoy your weekend.

That's so funny, I was just talking to someone about the Navy Grog a few days ago (I also love it with the honey). Now I might have to do one on the channel 😂 Thanks, David!

This sounds so good! I need to get Marischino liqueur (and dry curacao, because so many other good sounding dri n ks have that!)
