Yes please. A well made (bars seem to find this too much of a challenge) 2:1 martini is the greatest cocktail of all time. I could drink them every day for the rest of my life. In fact, I will. Would love to see your video on it
I've long thought you would slay a Vesper explanation and history. That's been one of my favorites but it is misunderstood mainly due to spirit/vermouth recipe changes (Gordon's, Lillet) etc.
Anders at his best ... shows us some under-the-radar, tasty cocktails we should be drinking. Everyone needs a few Martini riffs so they can assemble a short list of go-to tipples when the clock is ticking on an open bottle of 375ml vermouth.
A friend recently told me that she has started to have a "happy hour" at home every Friday after work, seeing these drinks has me wanting to do the same!
375, in Denmark they are 750, that is a Lot of martinis to drink 😄 serious question though, circa how long will an open bottle of vermouth endure in the fridge?
Just wanted to say I am amazed by how much better your videos are than *any* other cocktail channel on RU-vid, including those with several multiples higher subscribers. Not to knock any of them--plenty of them are very good and are worth watching--but your channel's combination of laid-back attitude, restrained (i.e. not over the top) goofiness, deep experience and skill, excellent audio and video quality, and a sense of openness and kindness really puts you head and shoulders above everyone else doing this. I wish you both all the success in the world with this endeavor. And thank you so much for all the amazing advice you've given me on making better cocktails!
So, literally two years later I find this video (and it's not like I haven't been looking at your videos, it's just RU-vid's algorithm). This is brilliant (and I happen to have a bottle of Bénédictine just because). Going to try the Ford.
I did NOT know vermouth should be kept refrigerated. Thanks for that! I only found out now that it even says it on the bottle in a font size for ants.. another lesson learned!
I'm sipping a Ford right now as I write this. Excellent, über-refreshing tipple! I had seen the Ford in Ted Haigh's book (I've got both the original and revised versions), but hadn't paid much attention to it. I made mine with Ransom Old Tom. I always learn something new and fun on your channel, Anders. Thanks, and you and Az keep up the good work!
I dont have Benedictine so I used Cynar for the Ford recipe and it turned quite interesting. Has the sweetness and the herbal flavours, turned extremely dry though (not sure how it suppose to be with Bene)
@@AndersErickson And now I'm enjoying the Ford. Also delicious. I think I like the Ford a little more, although I'll be making both of these in the future.
A request if I may. I had a cocktail once called a Bluetail Fly, it was amazing. Creamy and came with an umbrella! Have you heard of it and could you make it, I recall it was made with Blue Curaçao possibly?
I like those coupes a lot. They've been out of stock on Amazon for quite some time, but it looks like there are some alternatives, which is nice. (And of course I am going to make both of those cocktails this weekend; I just need some dry vermouth...)
Hey Anders! When you DO make the martini video, could you please explain the different Variations? I know there are words for like 50 Gin 50% Vermouth etc. and I would love to learn them!
Would Martin Mossi rosso work vermouth wise? Or are you dead set on Dolin. Also, have you ever tried Greenhook Ginsmiths old Tom and if so what are your thoughts?
I’m from northern England and Benedictine is synonymous with just one local town round here. During World War One the men of Burnley came across the drink and developed a taste for it, brought it back home after the war and for over a century continue to order it. However it’s really concentrated to just Burnley, go into the next town and not only will you struggle to find somewhere that serves it, they might not have heard of it! Generally it is served as ‘Bene n hot’ which is Benedictine and hot water which doesn’t sound like a great use for it but is a lifesaver on a cold day in Burnley.
Light bulb moment 💡: I think I finally figured out why my late mom didn’t like vermouth in her vodka “martini” … they kept the vermouth in the liquor cabinet! Even worse, cocktails were saved for infrequent social gatherings, so that bottle was realllly old. 2nd 💡 moment: In the kitchen she designed from scratch, the liquor cabinet was ….. right next to the stove. 🤦🏻♀️. Poor thing, raising 5 kids sometimes doesn’t allow much time to ruminate over non-life-critical decisions. (To be fair, she *did* include pull out shelves in the bottom cabinets & a cabinet-fronted refrigerator decades before I saw them anywhere else.) Can’t wait to try some local Chicago gin, now that I’ve moved back!
Your mom deserved an award and fresh vermouth! Love how she designed her kitchen from scratch. Cheers to your late mom, Laura - and welcome back to Chicago!
i always wonder like, if i went to a bar or nicer resturaunt and asked for one of these drinks you make, will they know what it is or give me weird looks?
Depends on the bar/bartender. If they give you weird looks, you're in the wrong place - but if they look up the recipe in a book or on their phone, there's hope.
I'll have to try that. What I normally drink as a "martini" doesn't quite fit the name - gin and olive brine, zero vermouth. There's a great, local olive producer that sells mason jars of just their brine for use in dirty martinis. I do like benedictine, though...
Can’t wait to try this! Had a variation of an old fashioned with Benedictine and loved it. It’s my go to drink at home now! Can you show us how to make a missionary’s downfall for ur next tiki drink video? 😁
For some reason, the state stores here have stopped carrying D.O.M. Bénédictine in favor of the B&B. Can it stand in or will the brandy element overpower?
B&B should still work in both drinks because they call for such a small amount of Bénédictine. Really hope your state stores change their mind on that decision though!
You simultaneously make me want to open a cocktail bar and realise that I don't know anywhere near enough about cocktails. Every video is a lesson and I love making these drinks. Thanks Anders
I love that you say to keep vermouth in the fridge, as soon as I found that out awhile back I started doing that at work and it helps a lot! My boss was like "why do you put vermouth in the fridge? This is the only place I've worked that does that." And I'm like "Because that's what your supposed to do!" This is at a country club too lol
Please create a cocktail book of your own. I LOVE your cocktail sips, tips, and recipes..hehehehe!!! Oh, and Curiada is amazing to work with. Thanks for turning me on to them.
Highly recommend getting a wine vacuum sealer for your vermouth. Oxidization is your enemy and being able to open a bottle, use it, and then seal it back up without any air will keep your vermouth lasting longer and tasting better, and will help you keep making higher quality drinks.
Something I learned from a book called Just Cocktails, is that dashes of liqueurs were different from dashes of bitters, and was done with something closer to a speed pour than a dasher. A modern dash is often cited at about an 1/8th of a teaspoon, where as the ones for Luxardo of Benedictine in those old recipes were closer to 1/3rd of a teaspoon. Those kinds of measurements made a lot more sense to me when I looked at a lot of pre-prohibition cocktails.
you 2 are a such a Great - entertaining Dynamic DUO!! Enjoy your Videos Immensely !! Rolls Royce..'Ford'...i may have an idea...'.Chevy'.-CHASE.( Martini )!! LOL! Cheers ..your Canadian Bartender!
I realy like your videos and I improve myself as a bartender thanks to you but now there is a war in my country, I`m from Ukraine. I know that you are just youtuber making videos about cocktails but you have a quater of a million people who watch your channel all over the world and our country realy need help: we nned Nato to close the sky for Ukraine because there are more than thousend of missiles damaging different cities, some of them are destroyed by 90%, we also need money for our army and charity organisations which helpin people who lost their homes What you can do? 1. Make video about cocktail. There many cocktails which were made by Ukranian bartenders (Something Tasty, Formula 17/52, LoggerHead Blazer, Sapphire infinity, Green mexican) 2. Bring up the topic of war to make more people involved in help for our country Hope for your support
Hi Anders, at the moment I only have beefeater, Gordon, and Bombay Sapphire gin. Which one would you use as a substitute for those two cocktails? Thanks in advance
You know, it'd be cool if you dove into Dr. Cocktail's book and put some of the hard to find stuff - wood aged peach brandy, torani amour, tonicola - on your curiada...
Something went wrong. I had to push Like two and a half times. I love all of your videos but frequently forget to push Like. I know it helps you. But it screws us. It inundates me with other people’s cocktail videos. And I don’t want that. I don’t want google thinking they know me. I empower thought bubbles and lose virtual autonomy. We have got to do away with this begging for likes. Systemically. Somehow.
Hey Anders, I'd like to try making The Ford, but where I live in the Caribbean there are no Old Tom Gins available. What are some possible gins I might be able to use? Closest I've been able to find is a Tanqueray Malacca.
Off the wall idea, my dentist (don't give up on me, just keep reading) has Bon Appetit videos playing in a loop and I love that because I like cooking new things and variety. Wouldn't be cool if cocktail bars had AE videos playing somewhere in the room to inspire customers to try new drinks?
Hey Anders, what do you think of this: 1 part each Cynar, Kahlua, Dolin Rouge over crushed ice, top with diet coke. I usually do about an ounce each and start with half a can but I top it off as I drink for different feels. Is there a name for this style of drink? Is there a name for the drink before the coke? I've been trying different Coca Cola drinks recently, (really liked Averna and Coke), and I came across this combo and it's been my favorite for a while.
Would it make a big difference in the Ford cocktail to use a London Dry Gin instead of Old Tom Gin? I haven't been able to find anything but London Dry gin locally, and I can't order alcohol for delivery in my state.
We did the side by side. They are similar, but I prefer the Rolls Royce. It’s a little less sweet and more gin forward. How about doing a Vesper next time.
The only friend I've ever had who drove a Rolls actually kept a glove compartment full of Grey Poupon to hand to people who stopped him and asked for one. He said that inexpensive jar of mustard gave more delight than the Rolls
Okay, is Az a wonderful actress who feigns surprise when trying these various cocktails, or is Anders such a bad person that he's not making these drinks for her on the regular?
Your content is always great, but you made no sense in the first minute "I don't want to do a martini video, but let's look at two versions of a martini". you are literally making 2 martinis, so it would make sense to add two classics, which you can then compare and contrast at that time, rather than make a martini video in 6 months, then have to make reference to this video. You did yourself a disservice my friend.
I absolutely love Benedictine and now my mind is blown - never thought I should try it in a Martini, a cocktail that I can't seem to "get". I am trying the Ford today! Also, still waiting on the Martini episode, can't wait to see you teach us your way of doing it! Cheers Anders and Az, have a nice one! 🥂☀️
@@AndersErickson My bottle of Benedictine is almost gone and we only bought it a couple months ago. And that's mostly due to your La Louisiana recipes.
It's very interesting how you drink both dry and sweet cocktails and you are like "oh I like it". I cannot swallow the dry ones. Ps. Still waiting for Voodoo Grog!... or at least another tiki ;)
I’ve been watching a ton of your videos - I enjoy the content, and the drinks always look awesome. I keep telling myself I’ll try making one some weekend, but that hasn’t happened yet. This weekend, my mission will be to make the Ford cocktail and see how it tastes. Looks right up my alley!
