If you love design as much as I do, whether it’s building furniture or creating crafts, you’re always on the lookout for new and inventive projects. Today, I’m excited to share a creative and eco-friendly craft that utilizes an everyday household item-the mason jar.
In my kitchen, I tend to collect a lot of glass jars, and the mason jar is my favorite. Designed by John Mason in 1858 for preserving foods, this jar has become a staple in many homes, not only for its intended use but also for its versatility in crafting projects. The mason jar’s two-part lid allows for various creative uses, making it perfect for DIY enthusiasts.
Here are a few simple ideas: you can use them as pencil holders, storage containers, or even as matchstick holders with a little sandpaper on the lid for striking. A personal favorite of mine is turning a mason jar into a sewing kit-an ideal gift for friends and family.
But today, I want to take it a step further and show you how to make a solar light using a mason jar. This project is not only fun but also a great way to recycle and save energy.
Materials You’ll Need:
A small solar light (easily found at a dollar store or craft store): amzn.to/3yMGy49
Electrical tape: amzn.to/3WZuo14
Scissors: amzn.to/3WZuo14
String (or thin wire or ribbon): amzn.to/3YOglg6
A mason jar: amzn.to/3AhAJMu
Steps:
Prepare the Solar Light: Begin by wrapping your solar light in electrical tape. This will create a buffer between the light and the jar, helping to wedge it securely in place. Depending on the diameter of your jar, you’ll need to wrap the tape around the light 12 to 15 times for a snug fit.
Activate the Solar Light: If you have a new solar light, don’t forget to pull the tab to activate it before placing it in the jar.
Insert the Light into the Jar: Once the light is wrapped, place it into the mason jar. It should fit snugly, ensuring it stays in place.
Secure with String: Take your string, wire, or ribbon, and wrap it around the jar. I prefer using string because it gives a nice, natural look. Once wrapped, place the lid on the jar and tighten it securely.
Enjoy Your Creation: And there you have it-a solar light made out of a mason jar! Not only are you recycling and helping to save the planet, but you’re also saving energy by using solar power.
Now, imagine making five to ten of these solar lights. You can hang them in trees or place them along pathways. When the sun goes down, these little lights will create a beautiful ambiance in your outdoor area, adding a touch of magic to your evenings.
This simple project is a great way to combine creativity with sustainability. Whether you’re making these lights for your own home or as gifts, they’re sure to be a hit. So, gather your materials and get crafting!
