In this video I show how you can convert an Ikea Tertial desk lamp into a mic stand. I'll also talk about how it could be used to hold other things. This is a quick and easy conversion - anyone can do it with minimal tools.
I just did it. I wasn't even seen the video, that's cool someone else thinks like me! BUT I didn't cut the wire, I removed it carefully (no cutting) so I could make a new DIY lamp!
Great video :) I just did this yesterday. The desk mount that comes with the Tertial lamp is seriously solid, and has a larger contact area, which I really appreciate as I have a thin glass desk. I had to tighten some screws in the pivot points until I got it completely stable in every position, as my microphone is pretty heavy (Shure SM57). In the end it worked flawlessly. I even attached my pop filter to it. 9.99 Euros well spent!
I could do exactly this to add a vocal microphone to my Casio Privia PX-770 digital piano! Great idea, mate! I wonder why I don't find anything regarding mounting a microphone for vocals on digital pianos, I can't find anything online... I guess everyone is using a clunky floor stand with a boom arm that gets in the way? hah!
Hi Mikey. Thanks for this. I got the lamp at IKEA today for about 9euro, went to a hardware store and they hacked it for me! I have a USB Shure MV5 ball mic screwed on it and I'm wondering if you have any diy ideas on isolating the mic. I previously used a desktop mini booth with acoustic foam, but now I'm trying to figure out how to hack something on the lamp.
i know you can’t make an omelette without breaking eggs, but is there a way to get the power cord out without cutting it? i know we can resplice the power cord but i don’t want to risk an electrical fire.
Really tempted to have a go at this, as I don't think most clamps included with mic stands would fit my desk (IKEA MALM). For the little steel connector piece that goes between the arm and the mic - are these generally detatchable from regular mic stands? I might buy a cheap one just to harvest it!
Brilliant idea! I wanna try out this one. I am also using an NT-1. How is it when you push the mic upwards with the IKEA arm? Does it keep fall down or is it able to handle the weight of the NT-1?
Have you ever noticed how that the lamp mount starts "tilting" if you have your mic either to your left or right of the lamp mount? Also, what sort of mic do you use? I have NT1 and certainly is too heavy for the lamp arm. :/ I even attached the 2 missing strings. Still, the lamp mount holds higher quality than the cheap mic arm mount!
I like the silver color of the arm and lamp. All they have now for the lamp is dark grey. And, 99% of extension arms are black. That post at the end of the arm intimidates me too much to try this hack, though
I did this with an old lamp but alas it was too old and wobbly. Even typing would transmit super loud, low frequencies. A diy hair tie shockmount didn't help either
Any way to make a DIY shock stand that isn't one of those that you sit your mic on top of? Already have a boom arm, but it picks up the keyboard/mouse thuds.
My daughter stopped the IKEA south of Salt Lake City. An employee there told her they are discontinuing the Tertial lamp. They we're in a close out section. I had her get me two more.
just to let you know your microphone keyboard and every tech in your damn room is made from china oh my god did you know that even your smartphone say made from china
Took me a minute to realize what this comment was about. I think I referred to the original mic stand as a “cheap Chinese” one. I don’t have anything against Chinese made things. I buy lots of them. It’s almost impossible to buy tech gadgets that aren’t made there (or thereabouts). I was referring to the poor quality of the original mic stand. Probably could have phrased that differently. Noted for next time. Thanks!
