How to make a Nightguard by Szara Dental

I have been making nightguards for over 20 years. I typically make anywhere between 3 to 5 per month. I am NOT the expert but have had much success delivering these types of splints. The key to a successful nightguard is to eliminate chair time. By following these simple directions in this video you to can eliminate chair time making you the hero. The bite splint I made in this video was cured in a heated Great Lakes pressure pot for 15 minutes @ 120 degrees farenheit 22psi. Its very important to use the correct acrylic that will withstand the forces of the night time sleeper. Please check out my AMAZON affiliate link to see what materials and equipment I use in my lab.

I’m a general dentist dabbling in lab work. Why not do a suck down and reline occlusal surface with resin to build up the bite?
@SzaraDentalLab
@SzaraDentalLab 3 года назад
That's how we make our soft splints. The clarity never comes out perfect by adding a second layer. A lot of Drs order a 2 mm suck down splint then add acrylic chairside. Very important to know the different products. Some suck down splint materials won't bond to acrylic

Hi Steve, thank you so much for the video. I'm a dental student and suffer from TMD, I had an occlusal night guard that I lost and through your video have learned to make one myself. My first attempt I didn't layer correct so there was porosity. My second attempt it turned out well but when I put it on, it slipped off with just a normal tongue thrust. Do you think I can skip the waxing step or is that necessary? Do you think I may have smoothened off the interior by acryluster too much and that's why it isn't tight enough? Last question do you think I can re-adapt the resin by adding to it like you would reline a temporary crown, in order to fix the tightness issue?
@SzaraDentalLab
@SzaraDentalLab 3 года назад
Biggest mistake waxing out a model is OVER waxing. I add an extremely thin layer to reliev any natural undercuts. Also especially on upper nightguards i add ball clasps for extra retention if needed. Yes you can reline a nightguard. Just make sure you add seperator to model. You may forget and you will ruin it

Interesting take on fabricating a mouthguard, constructive criticism: remove model bubbles from the occlusal surface from both models before mounting, and place your ball clasps before waxing undercuts, and no reason to wax occlusal surface of the mouthguard (loss of fit). I much prefer a traditional heat cure processed mouthguard. Cold cure seems extremely tedious!
@samlarson2483
@samlarson2483 3 года назад
I'm watching again, for brushes: horsehair acid brushes, (just dip them in boiling water to clean them up before first use). I make a ton of mouthguards also, I prefer to make a heat processed mouthguard, with a heat softened liner (no need for clasps, or relieving undercuts) also, finish the occlusal surface of your splint first, before removing the mouthguard from the model. occlusion, balance, and proper function should be done first after processing, once the splint is removed, it will never fit back on the model 100% accurately.
