I saw a video yesterday an this person had purchased three nucs from this other person that sales nucs an the person that sells the nuc came over to install them in the person that has a channel on here . When they took the lid off the first nuc I said WOW WOW there was MAYBE one an a half frame of bees in that whole nuc it was the sickest looking nuc I had ever saw and it was a over wintered nuc they said . Well the bad part was he got three of them an the person that had sold them to him was bragging about the nucs . None of the frames were drown out all the was an the patches of brood was about the size of his fist maybe .I just shook my head . What I see of your if I lived anywhere close to you I would for sure purchase from you if I needed any . Thanks

I can see checkerboard between honey and brood frames. I never break nest but expand the nest. Little point no biggie. One of the few who gives credit to the older ones who teach us.....good on you.

I would also not recommend checkerboarding the nuc into the bottom box. At the most at 1 undrawn frame in the middle of the nuc when you put it in the box.

If the overnight Temps are up for awhile we checkerboard a nuc into a 10 frame bottom board no problem. Within a week and a half ro 2 weeks we are doing the same when we add the 2nd brood box. We are also feeding. Once the second deep is full we stop feeding and add the super. We sell very strong nucs though. Many have 4 frames of brood ready to hatch and one food frame. Have to feed them when being aggressive. It works very well here in S central Illinois mid May or later. Just be sure to watch those temps

Very interesting, I'm learning lots. 👏 The things that fascinates me is how you go about it with hardly any bee suit, except on your head. With African bees and their hostility, you wouldn't dare do that. Most of the African bees are far from friendly!!! We normally have to wear full bee suits.

Yeah. I don't have to wear much at all. Most of the time the jacket is nice just to hold extra queen cages and other supplies. African bees.....yikes! Not sure I would want to be around them

Most definitely. When we notice some heat in it we just add pine needles and pack them in. Cools it right down.

Just subscribed, great info, could you give details on how to do eucalyptus treatment for hive beetles. I'm familiar with the boric acid method. Thanks in advance.

Mountain mint helps with varroa mites, I heard. It gives off camphor oils to bees as they forage it. So, eucalyptus with crisco in corners of each box for hive beetles? hmmmm... Can you share Don's link showing that? Thank you! Nice video and set up! I wonder if using a q-tip, with both camphor and eucalyptus oils on it, swiped on entrance hole to hive? Would it hurt them?

We saw Don using the eucalyptus and crisco for SHB when we took his class in Lula GA. We had to make more of it for him. We had less luck with it last year. I honestly don't know about the camphor and eucalyptus. Mites are a huge deal. Try your method. Do an alcohol wash before and after treatment. That's how you find out. Lots of different info out there. I've been watching University of Georgia and Florida mite testing results. There is no magic pill for mites yet. Hit them with a couple different treatments. But always check afterwards to be sure it worked! Thank you for watching and commenting!

I'm interested in the idea if you can cover it, how do you actually transition to making this a job without having to go to CA farms, and without being migratory? It seems like a big disadvantage to having to travel a lot. Hope you might have some thoughts on this.

It just depends on what your business model is. Ours is selling quality nucs and mated queens so people have a local source. We don't do any pollination. ....yet.

I see you have 3/4 screened holes in every box both levels both sides. Is that ok in the winter?
@honyokhoneybees8116
@honyokhoneybees8116 2 года назад
Actually they are 1 1/4" holes. Yes they are great to get the moisture out in the winter. We also add holes in the sugar shim on top to help get the moisture out as well so it does not rain down onto the honey bees. Warm moist air from the bees breath goes to the lid and the lid is Frozen due to the cold weather and the moisture condensates and rains back down onto the bees. Once they are wet they are dead in the winter. We do not wrap any of our boxes and they are exposed to the north winds. We overwintered 125 hives out of 129 we started with last winter. If I have a vent hole on the North side I put a piece of duct tape over it for the winter.

can i use 5 frame hive as brood to produce honey?
@honyokhoneybees8116
@honyokhoneybees8116 Год назад
We have. When people say you can't get honey your first year....this is a sure fire way to do it. Even with 3 pound packages we shook them into a 5 frame deep Box and when they had it drawn out checkerboarded on another 5 frame deep above and within 2 weeks we were putting mediums on for honey. We also make splits out of our bigger colonies down into 5 frame hives to help overwinter.
