Pastel portrait painting, step by step
By Bogra art Studio.
This was a really lovely portrait that I've enjoyed a lot! Great color palette and a lot of possibilities, the picture was great and the light wonderful...As you can see in the video I've been adapting the background while working..The important thing for this portrait was to get an accurate drawing from the beginning, to get some map to follow later...All the work was focussed to get her expression..Enjoy!!

What is truly amazing about your technique is that you start with eyes and other features before constructing the head, something I haven't seen many artists pull off successfully. This is beautiful in every way.

Hi I don't know about what you just mentioned. Is it not the usual way to construct the features and then go for the head? Cause I do like this (I'm a graphite artist)

I also start with the eyes, then construct the face around them..I want the eyes to look just right, which will affect the entire portrait.

Graciela... Wonderful Style!!! Never even thought to start with an eye to begin a portrait!!! Love how you use complementary color combinations for skin tones, hair clothing, and background. I've been painting portraits for a few years and have been using acrylic and mixed media to try and get the smooth super smooth airbrush effect in my paintings. Although perspective and the likeness was there, I wasn't satisfied with the smooth blendation and the realism. Pastels are SO much easier, and quicker to use than paint. And the overall effect it's just what I'm looking for. You are very GOOD at what you do, very professional...and it seems like you may have been academically trained. You have taught me something today, and I'm going to take full advantage of your tutelage. Thanks again Graciela for sharing your expertise.🎨

What I like that she did was take a portrait that was taken out doors, and subdued the defining extremes of light and dark, to make a studio finish portrait, as it had been taken under proper in studio light conditions. It's as if she 'negotiated' the light to dark planes of the portrait to bring a more diffused lighting condition using a very rich array of colors to describe facial contours. Brilliantly done!!!! Bravo Graciela!!!!

What a treat to have come across this video and channel! A lovely portrait process, especially the drawing part. I have just started trying pastel pencils and have found it to be a love/hate relationship. I am a watercolorist primarily, but I find pastel pencils more difficult since I cannot erase or lift. All of my work begins with a detailed pencil drawing and then transferred to the painting surface via a lightbox. This cannot be done with pastel paper, at least not with the Sennelier la Carte. So the transfer process is cumbersome and can lead to inaccurate shapes that are difficult to correct. Pastel pencils are definitely in a world of their own! However, continued use will improve my drawing skills since I must work directly on the paper.
