In this video I go through the steps of using a plunge router to cut out a circular table top. This method works incredibly well and has given me way better results than using a jigsaw. Check it out!

I turned a Oval leaf folding table into a round leaf folding table with your video. I never used a Router before, I am 77yrs old woman and like to do things by myself if I can. Your video with tool and technique was 100% successful. Thank you. 1/12/24

I'm used to larger, corded routers ru-vid.comUgkxfQ5_mgwq6PcudJvAH25t-I4D-3cTPz4z so this was a different experience for me. Basically, this is an incredibly sweet machine, fits well in the hand, etc. It has slightly less power than I'm used to, but that's understandable. Maneuvering freehand takes some practice. These days, it's especially nice to be able to avoid power cords. This is above the level of a hobbyist but below a pro level.

This was perfect as a vanity desk for me. ru-vid.comUgkxMAlHv7-BBWMrPRm5-uEoD6rtdT7SG2Qr Especially the glossy finish. Easy to cleanI was looking for something that wasn't the traditional white and with more of a modern feel. This fit the bill beautifully. I put it together with no problems, by myself in under an hour.Make sure you double check where you place the drawer tracks before screwing down. I had one track that needed to be aligned with different holes than the rest.

Great video, I’m gonna give it a try. Just a suggestion; you could add longer extension cable and run it up to the ceiling on a hook (I use shower curtain rings!) then when you’re making multiple passes the cable won’t get in the way or worse

Yes, the results are very nice but it takes FOREVER to get through the 1 1/2 inch fir! I just started experimenting with the router doing circles...actually I'm doing round holes for porthole windows. I gave up on the router after digging down 3/4 inches and finished with jig saw. The imperfections are covered up by the window flange. The router will make a perfect edge after many, many, many rotations.

Good points Mark 👍🏻 Since this video I’ve learned that it’s much more efficient to use a bigger router and a spiral cut bit. I usually go about halfway through, then grab the jigsaw, and finish the rough edge with a flush cut bit afterwards 👍🏻

I've used a similar technique with a difference I think makes the process easier. I cut just outside the final diameter maybe an eighth with a jigsaw, and then finish with a single router pass to get the perfect circle.
@mmcc_woodshop6288
@mmcc_woodshop6288 3 года назад
I’ve seen that done before! I didn’t have a flush cut bit at the time I did this video but I see no reason why that wouldn’t work perfectly 👍🏻

I’m looking to make my first circle dining room table. Did you interlock your joints or did you just glue the boards together edge to edge?
@mmcc_woodshop6288
@mmcc_woodshop6288 Год назад
Either method will work. If you can get the side joints really flat you don’t really need dowels/biscuits/dominos, glue is plenty strong. Using any of those will definitely help keep everything aligned. I use dominos now but in the past have used dowels to achieve the same thing

i have been looking for something that makes white oak|red oak "more white", rubio monocoat cotton white can do that but it is way to expensive. wondering without the first penetrating oil, just the universal finish and titanium white, will the result be much different?
@mmcc_woodshop6288
@mmcc_woodshop6288 Год назад
I would still strongly recommend Rubio even at the price point. I'm working on a table top that I used minwax stain and poly on - I'm on my fifth coat of polyurethane and I'm still not happy with the look and finish. I wish I would've used rubio because it is 100x easier to work with and get a good result.

What size screws do you use for the router base plate?
@mmcc_woodshop6288
@mmcc_woodshop6288 3 года назад
I'm not sure of the thread size, but the screws I used are about 3/4" long - they threads match the screws that came with my router. You want them long enough to secure the board and go all the way into the router screw slots, but not too long to where they stick out and scratch the board. You should be able to take the ones out that came with your router, and match the thread at the hardware store, then just get the ones that are 3/4 or so long.

@mmcc_woodshop6288
@mmcc_woodshop6288 2 года назад
Hey! Can you explain more of what you mean by a modern edge? Are you talking about running a router bit on the top circumference edge to detail it?
@nkhs4860
@nkhs4860 2 года назад
@MMCC_Woodshop hi, I recollect seeing table top with quite thinner edge compared to it's center thickness, giving it a sleek look. Yeah agree, it should be from running the edge with router bit.. Thx
@passatgt
@passatgt 2 года назад
@@nkhs4860 i guess you could mount the router at a slight angle if you put a block of wood below on one side? that way the cut would be beveled all around
@mmcc_woodshop6288
@mmcc_woodshop6288 2 года назад
I usually use a chamfer or roundover but on the edges of tops. You could always run a rabbeting bit on the underside to give the outer lip a thinner appearance as well

Did the 2" straight bit come with it?
@mmcc_woodshop6288

No, I bought the straight bit separately. I've done this a few more times and have found that a spiral up cut bit works much better than the straight (although the straight bit will still work).
