Let’s make a classic PETE ROCK type beat using the MPC ONE! Pete Rock is one of the original creators of Hip Hop as we know it today, and his sound uses soulful samples and chops to create classic sounding beats. Whether you are using the MPC ONE, a different sampler, or a DAW, these 3 tips can apply to your production.
For this beat, I used the MPC ONE as the standalone tool to flip the samples and arrange the drum pattern.

Pete Rock is the GOAT. He inspired a ton of producers including Dilla but doesn’t get a lot of mentions as a great producer.

The answer back in the day to only 10 seconds of sample time was to sample the record fast and slow the sample down, and by sampling one shot hits in mono.

One big trick they did was play samples at 45 to save sample time, then slow them back down in the sampler.

Doesn't really sound like Pete Rock. PR, as the self proclaimed Soul Brotha #1, has more melodic soulful sounding beats with more swing to the drums. This one sounds more like a Large Professor meets The Beatnuts type deal. With a more staticy SP1200 sound added to it, it could also sound like a Muggs beat. Either way, it's a great beat though. It has all the fundamental things of a classic 90s beat covered.
