I learned a lot watching your video. My wife's dad was a locally famous artist and collector of fine art. He was the professor at University of Florida for 20 years and Sante Fe JUCO for another 20 before he passed away. My wife inherited part of his 1.3 million $ art collection so we sell fine art and have dozens of paintings that need to be framed. I'm hoping to learn how to frame some so we don't have to pay someone else to do it all the time. I like the fact you showed your mistakes and went back and corrected them. For that reason and the fact I learned so much as a beginner I subscribed to your channel. Thank you so much. ( Rusty)

As someone who used to work for a high end custom framing business-use a stop block on the miter saw and cut each leg separately. Don’t stack pieces and try to cut them both at the same time. If you do, you risk screwing up two pieces instead of one. Also, cut your long pieces first-if you mess up, you can chop it down to be a short leg and save materials.

Hi Evan, I hope you're willing to help me. I plan on making a simple window frame. It will hold a pane of glass but it's strictly decorative. What type of wood do you suggest I use? Also, I've only got a miter box and saw to use.
@ritawashere5787
@ritawashere5787 4 года назад
Another question. If I use glazier points to hold the window into the frame what should I use for extra security? Because I don't have a router in order to make a Channel for the window to sit in two.

I’ve got an Osborne EB-3 miter gauge (like Norm has) that I use on my tablesaw for cutting meters. You can micro adjust it to get perfect 45s every time, plus it has a built in stop block so you can make exact copies of each length. If a frame is wide enough, I use 00 biscuits to join the corners.

*Ron Swanson voice* Our teenager asked me one day before the wife's birthday if we could "just go out and buy" a 36 x 12 inch frame. I watched this video instead and made the thing myself from scrap pine. I am semi-competent amateur woodworker but I had never made a frame before. It worked. This man and his video have my approval.

Best glue up for end grain is to thin coat the end and allow to dry 5/10 minutes. Then apply finish glue and assemble. I did this for plain T joint 3/4" square oak. On the test , the oak bent before the glue failed. Great video.

Hi Brad, I'm Carl a 79 year old novice wood worker. I want to make some picture frames. I have two questions for you. 1, how long did you cut the boards to begin with? I don't know how to figure out the length of the miter cuts. There's 2 different lengths the 8 inch top pieces and the 10 inch side pieces. And you said I can get 2 frames from an 8 foot board. Second question is about those triangle things you set the picture frames on to put the finish on frames? It looks like it's a simple project, but I'd like to hear how you did it anyway. Thanks Carl an old guy trying to learn.

Is this suppose to be a cheaper way to get a frame, for a picture? Some may, have the tools, I myself may have half the tools/supplies, that are needed? All in all, you'd be better off, going to a thrift store, get a frame you like. Right size; with glass or plexiglass, rework it, stain or paint. It would probably save you a lot of time and money. And work. But if you have the time; money and tools. DYI!?

I set up a sacrificial fence on my miter saw using 1/2" MDF, and cut the frame pieces. However, my mitered corners are coming out less than 90deg. My 45 deg cuts are actually like 44.7 degs or so. I suspect it's the sacrificial fence throwing things off. I'm going to take it off, and see if the saw is cutting perfect 45s without it.

Those fasteners for corners are complete crap for framing. If you don't pop the glued seam, they really aren't that good a "fastener" anyway. I always use splines or simply place a triangle of 1/4 inch plywood glued to the bottom of every corner. Makes things super easy and isn't seen from the front anyway.

For real beginners like me, I would have been helped if the completed frame were shown first, with all it parts pointed out and named. That way, the description of how the frame was built would have made more sense. I wonder if it would be an interesting teaching method if the film were run backwards to allow the novice to see a "disassembly" of the frame being made.

@flix4u

Sorry for the long setup and question. 😐 I’m planning to make over 200 frames with more than 50 or so of them just for a collection of 16 x 20 original Broadway lobby cards from the 60’s - 90’s. I’ll probably keep them plain and possibly paint or stain them black (to set off the art & look of the posters), although this is still Tbd. I’m not sure what wood to use. I don’t want them to get easily nicked, so maybe a hardwood? Although my shop collection of tools is growing rapidly, I have yet to buy the big toys - a table or miter saw. My first standing tool (on table) is a jointer I got for a steal. As for the saws, I’m pretty sure I’ll get a 10” sliding compound miter saw, and I’m still undecided in a table saw but it will have to be either a job site model due to limited space and storable requirements or a small but movable heavier table model. I’ll be doing lots of other projects as well. Ok now you have the setup; here’s the questions. I’ve got to purchase and use one of the saws to start and complete a lot of my frames and other projects. I’ll feel more comfortable using a miter saw (I think). But aside from my thoughts...which saw do you suggest is the better choice to use for the frames and other projects as well... assuming I may only have one of the saws for a while? and second, would biscuits be a good method for adding some extra stability to the miters? I do have this as well - If they wouldn’t be too big.Thanks in advance for your time reading and responding.

For that many frames I'd consider the table saw and make a miter sled. And yes, biscuits could be used if you have room
