HOW TO MAKE A PINBALL MACHINE: The Cabinet
Time-lapse of getting an old pinball cabinet ready for a new custom build. This is my first step in building a pinball machine - let's get a cabinet ready for us to put our playfield into!

Interesting channel Steve! I’m dreaming about building a pinball for over 40 years now :-) and I’m actually planning for the past 10 years. Lack of space and time prevented me from actual starting up the process. I did buy a donor about 8 years ago for cheap. Prices went sky high since then. The donor is a Flash, from the posters on your wall in this video. I really hope to start soon. Gonna watch your videos first. Thanks.

I've watched all your videos in this playlist -- great job! New subscriber. The link in the description to what I thought was going to be a cabinet design by John Marsh looks more like some kind of door latch or something, not a pinball cabinet. I've been looking everywhere to find some designs to build my own cabinet that will fit a Stern playfield size, same size you are making, but no luck so far.

I’m out of town right now, but I'll double check the link when I get back this weekend and send you the correct link, sorry for the confusion

On your share you have a fusion 360 file for a stern spike 2 cabinet. Are there any instructions or parts list you can link me to to go from cabinet pieces to a fully assembled cabinet? Any links or articles where others used this file on their projects? Thanks again for the great tutorials and information. You have been a great inspiration to me.

Sorry, no, I don’t have anything like that, the main thing will be getting the corner braces where the legs will screw in and then the hinges. That should all be available on pinballlife.com - You’ll just need to figure out what type of joints you want to use, ie simple butt joints or maybe a rabbit joint, etc.

More great info, I notice you mentioned the plywood for the cabinet is 3/8ths but when I look at your cabinet it just looks like a thicker plywood? I'm going to first see if I can salvage one like you did by putting an ad on facebook marketplace and if not I may have to use the fusion files . He doesn't mention plywood thickness there either.
@thepinballroom

3/4 inch, and I’m prototyping with 1/2 inch plywood rn - final playfield will be 3/4 and then sanded down to about 17/32 inch or whatever’s in between those two, haha

Can anyone make STEP files from the fusion files? I don't have Fusion 360. If this already exists can someone point me to it?

I built a 1/2 inch cabinet and it's not rigid and you have less screwing depth.i did it to save cost and weight.

How did you know the position of where to install those modern rails?

i wonder what is the story behind that particular cabinet. like why was a medieval madness thrashed that bad in the first place
@thepinballroom
@thepinballroom 2 года назад
Yeah, and how'd it go from MM to Monster bash? Iike did it come from the factory that way? Originally a MM cabinet but then built up as a Monster bash? Or did someone else convert it to Monster bash? 🤷And then yeah who let it get in that bad of a state??

Hi, what is the best way to figure out the height of the rail guides placement.
@thepinballroom
@thepinballroom 3 года назад
I took mine just by measuring the rails in one of my pins. I believe it’s fairly standard, because the front lockdown bar receivers are fairly standard- assuming you want a 6.5 degree pitch, then the front hole is usually 26” from the inside of the front, and 10.25” up from the inside of the bottom. The rear rail hole is also 10.25” from the inside bottom. So if you use the common playfield pivot bracket, those measurements should get you pretty much in line I believe. Hope that helps!

Mmm. That Simpsons game is discriminatory. Some serious shortarmism happening there. ;)

Had to jump to ~9:00 minutes to get to the subject. Rather silly. Then a time lapse where I want to find out how to do all of what you are doing. Not helpful for someone who wants to learn how to do all of this.
