Good job! I have always wanted to do some hot tenting, this idea would work nicely. 👍 I love how Maysie wants to be front and center... funny. Dogs always make video watching better!

Great job on the sled! Quick, easy, cheap and effective... I've been wanting to hike in over some ADK lakes and carry gear (maybe even my cat) on a sled. So cool - I have everything I need just sitting around in the barn. Great project for today. Thanks!

Thanks very much for this detailed tutorial ! I just bought a cheap sled and was looking for tutorials and found you. I will be carrying ropes and ice climbing gear, tent etc. And pulling with my lowe alpine daypack on my back, or my fanny pack as you suggested . With Madshus Epoch Nordic skis . in the Australian Alps (Kosciusko NP) yes we do have snow... even ice climbing on a small scale at a place called Blue lake. This will save me doing 2 trips, or carrying a massive pack while skiing

Great project, well explained. Using the poles is a lot better than just pulling with ropes. The poles give you more control over the sled, like you said, especially on the downhill.

That's the way our dogs , especially Dusty , (both yellow Labradors) used to act when they saw a sled. We grew up in Mennonite country, and a friend of my dad made a harness for each dog , Dusty and his mom Kim, and they loved to pull , especially Dusty who you could hardly hold back when hooked up. I remember my little sister screaming on the sled with both excitement and probably a bit of fear as Dusty would rocket out of the gates (so to speak) and tear down the trail/street/whatever. One dog could pull 2 people and happily.

I just purchased all the materials needed for my DIY pulk and I can't wait to get started. There's alot of vids and literature out there on DIY pulks but I find most of them involve unnecessarily complicated pole designs and attachments - and thus the cost (and time involved) goes up considerably. Since I'm not planning to go mountain climbing nor am I going to lead an Arctic expedition anytime soon, the KISS method should work just fine, and your video covered the basics. Great job!!!

a Pulk sled like she made will work almost as well in summer or other seasons as it works in winter! Useful for bringing large loads of firewood back to camp (or to the house if not camping) and going camping in much more comfort and supplied with provisions for a week or more vacation with one trip in to carry it all. Particularly WISE decisions for senior campers or campers who have medical conditions that would make back pack carrying heavy loads unwise. They can STILL have the fun of camping with just a simple adapting to pulling rather than packing your gear!

A cargo net will secure the gear but still allows to snow to get into the pulk adding wait, instead use a poly tarp and bungee from side to side. It will better protect the contents of the Pulk and can serve as a ground cloth or emergency shelter if needed.

Stick some wheels on it and it'd be useful even down here in the lower 48. The melting of the rope kinda makes me want to do a tutorial on rope braiding, which seems to be a nearly lost art.
@DFDuck55
@DFDuck55 7 лет назад
Okay, I will (try to) make a tutorial video. It may take me awhile, I'll have to buy some rope (hopefully I can find my favorite; hemp), and remind myself how it's done. It's been 35-40 years since I've show anyone how to braid or bind rope, and 15 or more years since I've done it. Knowing how to braid rope used to be a skill you could make good money at when ski lifts were rope. I'll give you a heads up when I get it made.

Can I do without the poles (just the rope to pull)? I am planning to get into backcountry skiing for cheap. Usually I carry my skis on my backpack and snowshoe up. So for downhill, everything would on my back (including my small pulk/ diy sled made out of skis with boots strapped together).
@DanielLuechtefeld

I tried using only ropes. It doesn't work. The pulk was CONSTANTLY tipping over. The addition of the inexpensive PVC pipe vastly increases the stability.

Excellent vid! Should the length of the PVC be the same as the height of the user? I noticed you used your wingspan to measure out 5'7" for the PVC , but what about for someone who is 6'2"? Thanks
@therealgirlinthewoods
@therealgirlinthewoods 3 года назад
never really thought of it... guess it wouldn't hurt!
@christymicallef8171

The length required depends on how you're pulling (skiis, snowshoes, by foot) to leave room for a proper stride without your snowshoes etc getting caught under the sled.
