William Morris said "Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful". After watching your videos, I believe your philosophy for making tools and jigs is that you want both usefulness AND beauty. This is not only a very useful tool, the care and craftsmanship that you put into creating it makes it beautiful as well. Watching your videos is always a pleasure. Thank you for continuing to post them!

I sleep poorly. I try to make my house beautiful during the day. i know i am an amateur. At night when I can't sleep I watch these demonstrations. No shouting, no music, just the sound of clean machines and craftsmanship. I watch with admiration and great appreciation. When a beautiful piece of work is delivered again, I am so happy. I have sleep again and I know what to expect tomorrow, a lot of work, but I feel good and go to sleep and my thought is: I will get that garden staircase level, if not tomorrow then the day after tomorrow ”. and with a satisfied smile I fall asleep.

Careful preparation of materials and tools, calm but very thoughtful and methodical work, accuracy, order, diligence. It is 100% certain that the effect will be perfect. You keep showing me ways to do things in clever ways that I had not thought of before. In the previous video you used the two first holes to make space out the third one, in this one you use a spacer block... I like your projects, and bought the plans for the 6-in-1 drill and panel saw. Now, to find time and space to actually build them...

Great work as always! However... I did find one thing that can be improved, and it’s the pencil holder itself. This one is designed for one specific pencil and can’t use different marking tools like regular pencils or tools to scratch. And also the pencil itself gets pushed to one side. One way to solve that would be if the pencil holder was in the shape of a “V” pointing towards one of the ends and the screw pushed from the opposite side wedging it into the “V”. But of course I’m just nitpicking hehe. I’m always amazed by your craftsmanship. Keep up the good wood work! :)
@XJWill1
@XJWill1 3 года назад
That would not mitigate the effect of using pencils with different diameters. Smaller diameters would ride deeper into the 'V', and that would offset the point from being centered between the two end guides. This kind of center finder will only work if the point of the pencil or scribe is exactly centered on a line between the centers of the end guides. So instead of a 'V' you would need something like an iris diaphragm that can accommodate different diameters but keep them centered to a specific point. I do not think that is really practical, but maybe someone has a clever idea how to do it.
@leobrent7926
@leobrent7926 3 года назад
X JWill you are absolutely right! However, the most common way to deal with this kind of error is to simply make a mark with the tool riding on one direction, then coming from the other side and if there is any noticeable difference between both passes, you simply split the difference by eye or drill in between the lines. After all... nobody needs to be “that precise” hehe. But thanks for the observation.

If you were going to use a spacer to line up the outside holes for drilling, why mark them first? That process requires more precision in making the spacer so that it matches what you marked.
@GoatZilla
@GoatZilla 4 года назад
I wonder if this could be directly adapted into a drill jig, since most of the time I'm only looking for the center to drill a hole. So instead of marking and drilling, go straight to drilling.
@jisakukobo
@jisakukobo 4 года назад
This work is done for punch work. It may not be necessary for woodworking as you say. However, since I have experience in iron processing, I was reluctant to drill as it was.
@landroveraddict2457

instead of the pencil insert a hard bush like a bearing sleeve and drill through the bush with an appropriate size drill bit.
@jisakukobo
@jisakukobo 4 года назад
@Land Rover Addict Your idea came up with a good idea. Just chuck the punch into the drill and push it in. As long as it uses a drill fence, it can be processed with extremely high precision.
