Learn how to make a ruler marking gauge from a few pieces of leftover materials you might have around your shop. This simple shop built tool will come in very handy without costing too much to build.
I have a number of marking gauges in the workshop but sometimes on a complex woodworking project you will have them all set to measurements. In this situation and additional marking gauge is great making this ruler stop a useful project to pass a couple of hours.
I used a scrap of Walnut from my box of interesting wood, a small piece of maple veneer and a brass thumbscrew available from your favourite online auction site for about a pound and with the help of Jimbob the shop dog finished this project in a couple of days. The longest part of the whole job was applying the six coats off finishing oil that needs about six hours between coats.
All in all I’m happy with the outcome and look forward to using it in years to come.
